A Many People Accept Or Reject Religious Beliefs On The Basis Of Emotion

They may believe in a church, preacher, or doctrine, because they “feel good” about it, regardless of whether or not they have found convincing evidence that it is true.

Some almost rebel against the need for study and evidence in religion. They view faith as a “leap in the dark” based on feelings. A popular song said, “It can’t be wrong when it feels so right.” That expresses the approach some take to determining their religious views.

Consider some specific examples.

Better-felt-than-told” religious experiences

Some people had emotional experiences that convinced them they were saved. Maybe they attended a “revival” with rhythmic music, hypnotic preaching, clapping, excitement, and people claiming to “feel the Spirit moving.” Perhaps emotional appeals brought them to the “mourner’s bench” where they tried to “pray through.”

Or some may have experienced guilt or some other deep emotional need, and they prayed to God for help. Then maybe they have heard some religious teaching and assumed this was God’s answer. Maybe they received a deep sense of peace and warmth, so they just “feel sure” they are saved. Asked to describe this feeling, they say, “It’s better felt than told, but if you ever feel it, you’ll know it.” Others have said, “I wouldn’t trade this feeling for a stack of Bibles.”

Some teachers tell people to pray to know the truth and God will answer in the form of a feeling of warmth, peace, conviction, etc.

Do All Feelings Of Love Or Emotion Come From God

Now that does not mean that all feelings or emotions of love come from God. Some of those emotions come from other sources such as natural attraction or infatuation or even lust.

What the Bible says is that God is the model and source of true love. It says that we get our ability to love from God.

It is born through a personal relationship with Jesus. When we have Jesus on the inside of us, then we have the love of God on the inside of us.

The Bible says if we do not choose to love, then we are still walking in darkness but when we choose to walk in love, then we are walking in the light.

B What Is The Purpose Of Worship

The primary purpose of worship is to honor and praise God.

Revelation 4:9-11 – We worship in order to give God honor, glory, and thanks.

Hebrews 13:15 – We “offer the sacrifice of praise to God…, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”

Isaiah 55:8,9 Luke 16:15 – But what pleases us and what pleases God are often two entirely different things. We must determine what we do in worship, then, according to what God wants, regardless of whether or not it excites us or gives us enjoyment.

Sometimes people say, “I just don’t get anything out of worship,” meaning that it does not please them like they expect it to. But this is no excuse for failing to worship, or for changing the worship so that it does please us. The purpose of worship is to please God, not to please the worshipers. We should participate, not for the feeling we “get,” but for the honor we can give to God.

Another purpose for worship is to teach people God’s will and to encourage them to obey it.

Hebrews 10:24,25 – We assemble to “provoke one another to love and good works” and to “exhort one another.” Note that it does not say to provoke one another to excitement and a “good time.”

Colossians 3:16 – We sing to “teach and admonish one another” as well as to express praise to God.

2 Timothy 4:2-4 2 Corinthians 7:8-10 – Scriptural teaching may, at times, rebuke people and lead them to sorrow for sin. This may not be enjoyable or pleasing to the people, but it is still an essential part of worship.

A Many Churches Design Their Worship To Excite Emotions

The Reality of Your Emotions

People often mistake emotional feelings for true spiritual-mindedness. When they get excited, they “feel close to God” or claim they “feel the Spirit moving.” Some people will only attend churches where they get this emotional “high.” So some churches appeal to such thinking by deliberately arranging activities that provoke excitement and emotional stimulation. They intentionally use such emotionalism to draw crowds. Consider some examples:

Beautiful cathedrals with fancy artwork to create a “mood” that people enjoy

Exciting preachers with dramatic eloquence or dynamic speaking rhythm that arouses and excites

Thrillingmusic with instruments and special singing groups or with hypnotic rhythms that arouse, excite, entertain, and “move the audience”

External rituals such as lighting candles and dimming lights to create a mood

Tongue-speaking” and “healing testimonials” that excite people emotionally – Often it is the emotions involved that lead people to desire these gifts, regardless of what the Bible says about the true purpose and use of the gifts .

Clapping, shouting, continual“Amens” and “Praise the Lord” – Suchactivities are often deliberately used by preachers to stir up emotions and excitement.

Is God really pleased by such motivation in worship?

How To Walk By Faith And Not By Your Feelings

What are you led by? What directs your decisions, actions, words, and thoughts?

As believers, were called to live by faith. And yet so many of us choose to live by something elseour feelings. Have you ever made a decision because it simply felt right? Have you ever said something because it felt like the perfect moment? I know I have. Before I became a believer, I lived fully by feeling. My feelings informed my reactions to life and directed my every step. If a pathway wasnt accompanied by a nice feeling, it wasnt the one I took.

Shortly after I became a believer, I still lived by my feelings rather than my faith. I doubted my salvation because it didnt feel real. I struggled to believe that God still loved me when I sinned because I couldnt feel His love. I often gave into temptation to sin because it felt better than obedience. My worship time was completely regulated by my feelings as wellif I felt near to God, then I had worshiped effectively and rightly.

Do you live by your feelings? Do you live in a similar way that I did? If so, we need to consider what Gods Word has to say about our feelings and what living by faith actually looks like.

How We Love Others

I think that the best description of how God wants us to love each other is found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 where it says, Love suffers long and is kind love does not envy love does not parade itself, is not puffed up does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.

The funny thing is that I cant love people on my own. There are certain things I can do on my own on a limited basis, but I cannot truly love others unless I learn to let God love me first. When His love for me is strong, then I am able to share that love with others.

If I could choose to only study one thing about God for the rest of my life, it would be His love. It is His love that sustains me and makes my life worthwhile. If you have never experienced Gods love before, ask Him for it. It will be something you will never regret in your life.

Your Feelings Lie To You That Fact Isnt Just Scientific Its Also Biblical

When God created man and woman, he created us in His image, which means we have a spirit, a mind/will, and also emotions.

Our emotions are an important part of life here on earth they bring us joy and purpose, while also serving to protect us from danger and harm.Yet our feelings can be tricky to interpret, and even more dangerous to trust.

In our current culture, feelings have become king. We hear many phrases that encourage us to fully embrace our tricky emotions:

  • Follow your heart
  • Do what makes you happy
  • Find your best life
  • Just be yourself

The problem with elevating our feelings and emotions to the point of absolute truth is that our human bodies, and therefore emotions, are hopelessly flawed!

Ever since Adam and Eve chose to break the one rule they were given because they falsely believed they knew best, humankind has been prone wander from whats best. We consistently choose our truth over our Creator Gods omniscient Truth!

The Bible makes our tendency to wander very clear:

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. Genesis 6:5

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Galatians 5:16-17

Be Aware Of The Accuser And His Power Play For Your Feelings

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. Revelation 12:10

Satan is often referred to as the accuser. He loves to prey on our emotions and make us feel condemned. He desires to make us slaves to perfectionism and the kind of religious living that focuses on the outward rather than the inward. He is the great deceiver, eager to find our weak places.

Scripture teaches us to resist the Devil , and Jesus showed us we can do so using the truth we find in scripture !

Don’t Miss: What Does The Bible Say About Worrying About Others

Why Did God Give Us Passions Or Emotions

Why did God give us passions or emotions? God made man in such a way that he can love and hate, desire or despise something, be attracted by some things and afraid of others, be full of joy, sorrow, or anger. In the depths of his heart man always loves good and hates evilor what he considers to be such.

Bible Verses About Emotions

Grace

A fool always loses his temper,But a wise man holds it back.

As in water face reflects face,So the heart of man reflects man.

He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.

Examine me, O Lord, and try me Test my mind and my heart.

Like a city that is broken into and without wallsIs a man who has no control over his spirit.

A tranquil heart is life to the body,But passion is rottenness to the bones.

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,But he who walks wisely will be delivered.

Do not be eager in your heart to be angry,For anger resides in the bosom of fools.

O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous For the righteous God tries the hearts and minds.

Tremble, and do not sin Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Arise, O Lord save me, O my God!For You have smitten all my enemies on the cheek You have shattered the teeth of the wicked.

Trust in Him at all times, O people Pour out your heart before Him God is a refuge for us. Selah.

I want you to swear, O daughters of Jerusalem,Do not arouse or awaken my loveUntil she pleases.

A fool does not delight in understanding,But only in revealing his own mind.

Cry loudly, do not hold back Raise your voice like a trumpet,And declare to My people their transgressionAnd to the house of Jacob their sins.

Let his flesh become fresher than in youth,Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor

Scriptures On Emotions That Will Help You Enjoy God

Find your delight in the LORD. Then he will give you everything your heart really wants.

Psalm 37:4 NIrV

God doesnt want us to talk to him begrudgingly, out of habit or duty.

He wants us to enjoy our relationship with him, to find delight in spending time with him.

Kids can teach us a lot about our relationship with God, and my 3-year-old daughter helps me understand this scripture. At this age, she is still delighted to be with mom and dad.

She loves when I sit with her and watch her favorite movies, eagerly pointing out all her favorite scenes for me to enjoy. She frequently bursts into our room to show her dad her latest drawings or update him on what her stuffed animals are doing.

Seeing her enjoy our company so much teaches me a lot about how it must make God feel when I enjoy being with him.

The Bible says that when we find our delight in God, he will give us everything our heart really wants. Our emotional needs for love, security, acceptance, and protection will be covered by God. That means our hearts will be satisfied and happy because of our relationship with him, leaving us freed up to care for other people.

To enjoy this kind of relationship with God, we have to learn how to experience God emotionally. Delight is a feeling. Without emotion, our relationship with God will become nothing more than a distant, empty tradition:

On the other hand, sometimes we listen to our emotions too much and they replace God and his Word .
