Gentleness Is Not Just A Nice Thing To Be Its A Fruit Of The Holy Spirit

Gentleness is not just a nice thing to be its a fruit of the Holy Spirit. That means that if you want to be like Jesus, then gentleness should be one of your top priorities.

Gentleness is more than just being nice and kind and caring towards others its actually the quality of God Himself who has been poured out into our hearts by His Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ .

This means that when we see someone in need, we can no longer ignore them or pass them off as someone elses problem. Instead, let us show compassion on those around us by being gentle towards themespecially those who may not be as fortunate as ourselves.

What The Scriptures Say About Gentleness

According to the Scriptures, gentleness is a wonderful fruit of the Holy Spirit. Anyone who is serious about pleasing God must cultivate a gentle spirit. It is a character which directly links us to Jesus Christ, for didnt He speak of the meek inheriting the kingdom of God? In Apostle Johns Revelation about the end times, he looks for a lion but finds a lamb. Just like the other spiritual fruits that are being fueled by the Holy Spirit, gentleness is an aspect of Gods character that all His children must adopt and reflect. Also note here that being gentle has nothing to do with being unassertive, indecisive, wishy-washy, and/or just plain wimpy. Rather, being gentle is about self-control, the refusal of using power to harm anyone, the refusal of embracing vengeance, and an unwillingness to cut and slash at others.

Galatians : 1 Christians Should Forgive And Restore One Another In A Spirit Of Gentleness Bible Verse

What does the Bible say about the fruit of the Spirit?

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the days out. Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.

Meaning Of Blessed Are The Meek

Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” . The word meek from the original language was used to describe reining in a stallion. It is the idea of a horse being controlled by a bit and bridle. The horse is choosing to submit to authority. That is meekness. It is power under constraint.

Meekness is not weakness it is power under control. As the writer of Proverbs says, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city” . In contrast, the individual who is not gentle is likened to “a city that is broken into and without walls” . Gentleness always uses its resources appropriately, unlike the out-of-control emotions that so often are destructive and have no place in your life as a believer.

Transcribed from the video above, Johnnie Moore discusses the meaning of the scripture quote “the meek will inherit the earth” from Matthew 5:5.

And when Jesus says that, “the meek will inherit the earth,” he’s speaking an incredibly counter-cultural truth to these people sitting on this hill in the middle of this village overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Because this was a world that didn’t understand weakness or meekness. This was a world that understood power. This is a world overruled by Caesar’s. This is a world where armies made people in rebellion subject to their sheer force. This is a world that turned on the tables of power. Those were the people that inherited the earth.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

What comes to your mind when you think of gentleness?

A common misconception is that gentleness is weakness or passivity. True gentleness, however, is just the opposite. It requires great strength and self-control.

Gentleness comes from a state of humility. Therefore, someone who lacks gentleness is often prideful and easily angered, or feels the need for revenge.

In order to be gentle, we must not view ourselves as better than someone else. Rather than asserting superiority, someone who is gentle wants to help others, even when they have been done wrong.

An example of gentleness can be seen in John 8, when the Pharisees bring a woman who was caught in adultery to Jesus. The Pharisees told Jesus that the Law of Moses commanded them to stone such a woman, to which Jesus responds, Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her .

After everyone left, Jesus did not condemn the woman, and said to her, Go now and leave your life of sin .

Just like how Jesus was gentle with the woman in this story, God is gentle with us. Even in our sin, He continues to love us. He does not keep record of our wrongs, but offers forgiveness if we come to Him.

So how do we grow in our gentleness?

Imagine being able to watch the apostle Paul in action. How did he treat people, especially those who often failed? In 1 Thessalonians 2:7, Paul gives us a glimpse of how he treated others: We were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children.

Gentleness is a strong hand with a soft touch. It is a tender, compassionate approach toward others weaknesses and limitations. A gentle person still speaks truth, sometimes even painful truth, but in doing so guards his tone so the truth can be well received.

Puritan leader Jonathan Edwards called gentleness the Christian spirit. Edwards said, All who are truly godly and are real disciples of Christ have a gentle spirit in them.

The Bible goes out of its way to demonstrate Jesus gentleness. In fact, the Old Testament depicts the Messiah as unusually gentle, telling us that Jesus would not break a bruised reed or snuff out a smoldering wick . In the Gospels, Jesus affirmed His gentleness: I am gentle and humble in heart . And the apostles often reminded the early church of Jesus gentleness: By the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you .

In fact, the reverse is true.

Its the strong hand, not the weak one, that must learn to be gentle.
