Does The Bible Forbid Homosexuality

Does the Bible Say Anything About Homosexuality?

Gay-friendly clergy tend to use the terms love and acceptance interchangeably, claiming that we must love everyone, because we are all children of God.

It is certainly true that Jesus commanded us to love everyone, but it is not true that we are all children of God. And it certainly is not true that we must tolerate and accept evil behavior.

Scripture repeatedly refers to children of the Devil:

No one born of God commits sin for Gods nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother .

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your fathers desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies .

Anyone who has seen cursing, blaspheming homosexuals simulating sex at a Gay Pride parade, or has read their hate-filled screeds against the Catholic Church, should have no problem discerning whether they are children of God or spawn of the Devil.

Of course, homosexual persons are to be loved and respected, and homosexual tendencies are not sinful if they are not wanted. But homosexual activity is immoral and absolutely anti-biblical.

Homosexuality Was Added To The Bible In 1946

In Ethics, New Testament, Old Testament

It is becoming more and more popular to argue that the Bible speaking against homosexuality is a recent innovation that was added to the Bible to make Scripture anti-gay. One very common iteration of the argument is that the word homosexual was not in any Bible prior to 1946. The implication of such argumentation is that the Bible does not speak against homosexuality, and that the church should therefore accept a gay lifestyle as being compatible with biblical teaching.

Those who put forward such argumentation typically point to Luthers German translation of 1 Corinthians 6:9, which uses the word Knabenschänder, or boy molester rather than the typical idea of homosexual found in modern translations. Additionally, proponents point to the KJV translation, done in 1611, which translated 1 Corinthians 6:9 as, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind. It was not until 1946 with the translation of the RSV that the term homosexual came to be utilized in Bible translations.

How should Christians respond to such argumentation? Is it true that the Bible is accepting of homosexual behavior, and that it was only recently when the Bible was twisted to be anti-gay?

There are multiple arguments which are important to work through in order to think accurately about this issue.

Does The Bible Really Call Homosexuality An Abomination

Whisper Creek: Poetry and Prose: Homosexuality and the ...

Homosexuality is abomination. The Christian Right says so all the time, and non-religious LGBT activists say it too, to relegate religion to humanitys dustheap. After all, isnt that what it says in the Bible?

Noand progressive religionists should not use the word. Its a mistranslation and a misconception, doing harm to LGBT people and religious people alike.

The word abomination is found, of course, in the King James translation of Leviticus 18:22, a translation which reads, Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it abomination. Yet this is a thoroughly misleading rendition of the word toevah, which, while we may not know exactly what it means, definitely does not mean abomination. An abomination conjures up images of things which should not exist on the face of the earth: three-legged babies, oceans choked with oil, or Cheez-Whiz. And indeed, this is how many religious people regard gays and lesbians. Its Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Homosexuality is unnatural, a perversion, a disease, an abomination.

Yet a close reading of the term toevah suggests an entirely different meaning: something permitted to one group, and forbidden to another. Though there is no etymological relationship, toevah means taboo.

Elsewhere, Deuteronomy 7:25-26 commands:

Similarly, the Books of Kings and Chronicles use toevah nine times to refer to acts that other nations did in the Land of Israel:

Detestable Because it is Foreign, or Foreign Because it is Detestable?

Homosexuality In The Pauline Epistles

Epistle to the Romans 1:2627 :

For this reason , God gave them up to passions of dishonor for even their females exchanged the natural use for that which is contrary to nature, and likewise also the males, having left the natural use of the female, were inflamed by their lust for one another, males with males, committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was fitting for their error.

The context is Paul’s mission to the gentiles, the gospel being “to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” , followed by a description of pagan idolatry in verses 1:2125. The phrase “passions of dishonor” translates ,‘atimia’ meaning “dishonour, ignominy, disgrace”.In the expressions “natural use” and “contrary to nature”, “nature” translates , i.e. Physis. The term “error” translates , ‘plan’ .

The authenticity of the passage is in doubt scholars and theologians have proposed its being part of a larger non-Pauline interpolation. Furthermore, many contend 1:18-32 represents not Paul’s own position but his summary of Hellenistic Jewish legalism. Calvin Porter, for example, concludes that “in 2:1-16, as well as through Romans as a whole, Paul, as part of his gentile mission, challenges, argues against, and refutes both the content of the discourse and the practice of using such discourses. If that is the case then the ideas in Rom. 1.18-32 are not Paul’s. They are ideas which obstruct Paul’s gentile mission theology and practice.”

Is It True That Jesus Never Condemned Homosexuality

This question assumes three ideas that are unbiblical. First, it assumes that the teachings of Jesus are in conflict the rest of the Bible. Remember: when Paul speaks, Jesus speaks, because the Bible is inspired by the same Holy Spirit. When Romans condemns homosexuality, that is the same as God himself condemning homosexuality. Second, Jesus never says that you shouldnt poison a federal judge. Does that mean that it is okay to poison a federal judge? No. Thats not how Scripture works. One has to take the Bible as a whole to know what God says. Third, this claim is just not true. Jesus explicitly condemns sexual immorality which is a term that, as we know from other Greek and Jewish writings in the first century, includes homosexuality. So Jesus does condemn homosexuality he just uses a different word to do it.

Can I Be A Christian And Struggle With Same

Absolutely! The traditional teaching of the church can be summed up as: celibacy in singleness and fidelity in between one man and one woman. Everyone has a struggle at some point in their life with the expression of their sexuality. While the idea of someone giving up their sexual lives is a huge sacrifice, remember that both Jesus himself and the Apostle Paul did not marry or have children.

There have been many others in Christian history who also did this. In 1 Corinthians 7:6-9, Paul expresses that he wishes more people could receive the gift of celibacy just as he had because it would allow for more focused work to grow Gods kingdom. That gives us a question for our day: are we willing to sacrifice everything, including our sex lives, for Jesus? If we believe that God wants all of who we are, then that includes our sexuality.

Does The Bible Say Homosexuality A Sin

What does the Bible say about homosexuality and sin?

Plainly speaking, the Bible tells us that the practice of homosexuality is a sin. It is something that God forbids and has repeatedly stated is outside of His plan for human sexual expression.

However, it is not a sin to have same-sex feelings. The key in this situation is to practice celibacy. Sexuality is a very core part of human existence in fact it is the first command humanity receives from God in Genesis 2:24:

“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

Along with that command is the idea that sexuality is about reproducing human life. This is not just limited to animal life, but specifically those that bear the holy image of God. That process is sacred and guarded by the covenant of . When we strip the reproductive purpose from our sexuality, all we are doing is making it an act of pleasure and self-satisfaction. At that point, we make sex about the specific act of copulation and not the life of responsibility that should go along with it.

There is much more to sex than the moments of pleasure. If we cannot pledge to God that we are willing to abide by his rules of conduct in our sexuality, then the best thing we can do is to devote ourselves more deeply to our relationship with Him and wait until God clears things up for us.

    not

The Bible’s moral teachings are intended to help us live according to God’s will. They are not intended to be used to condemn other people. We are never to take upon ourselves the task of judgment that belongs to God alone ” rel=”nofollow”> Matthew 22:37-40, , , ). Jesus told us to eliminate the sins in our own lives rather than passing judgment or looking down on others. Jesus said that if we judge other people harshly, we will, in turn, be judged harshly:

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

James makes it clear that we must treat others with mercy, not with judgment or partiality :

You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. For the one who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery but if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy mercy triumphs over judgment.

Is Homosexuality A Choice Can Sexual Orientation Be Changed

What does the bible say about being gay? – Session 2 Q& A

Some people believe that homosexuality is a choice people make and they could just as well choose to be heterosexual. However, The American Psychological Association says this about the origins of sexual orientation:

There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay, or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social, and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation.11

Some groups claim to be able to change sexual orientation using “reparative therapy” or “conversion therapy.” However, studies claiming to show the effectiveness of these methods have been criticized as flawed and one widely quoted study has been retracted by its author.12

According to the American Psychological Association:

To date, there has been no scientifically adequate research to show that therapy aimed at changing sexual orientation is safe or effective.11

    The American Psychiatric Association states:
