What Does The Bible Say About Parent And Child Relationship

Proverbs 2: 6 King James Version // Train Up A Child

Devoted Kids: What Does The Bible Say About Parents?

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Colossians 3:20 // Children obey your parents verse

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

1 Timothy 5:3-4 // Children duty to care for aged parents

Honor widows who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.

Bible Verses About Parental Love

But Jacob said, My son shall not go down with you for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should befall him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.

Train up a child in the way he should go,Even when he is old he will not depart from it.

He who withholds his rod hates his son,But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.

For thosewhom the Lord loves He disciplines,And He scourges every son whom He receives.

I Have Come To Turn A Man Against His Father

âDo not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn

âa man against his father,

a daughter against her mother,

a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-lawâ

a manâs enemies will be the members of his own household.ââ

This is one of the more startling statements Jesus made in his earthly ministry. But he goes on to give us a better idea of what he means:

âAnyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.â âMatthew 10:37

Sometimes following Jesus pits us against the desires and perspectives of our family members. These moments reveal who truly holds the greatest importance in our lives and what we really love most. No matter how much we love our families, obeying God and honoring him with our choices should always take precedence.

Setting A Godly Example In The Home

One way that children learn is by watching the examples around them. It is imperative that we watch to make sure that our children have godly examples in their life. Children are constantly watching us watching what we do, watching how we respond to our frustrations, watching how we treat one another we must be the godly example for them.

They learn far more from what they see than from what we tell them. We have to do BOTH: constantly tell them about the Bible, and live according to it.

30. Proverbs 22:6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

31. Joshua 24:15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

32. 1 Peter 5:2-3 Be shepherd of Gods flock that is under your care, watch over them not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

Eunice Mother Of Timothy

Everything the Bible Says About Parenting and Children: How does God ...

Eunice does not have a Bible narrative of her own, but we do know that Timothy was a young leader whom Paul trusted and believed in so much. Paul also commended his mother and grandmother in 2 Timothy 1:5 saying, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.”

Eunice had a contagious faith that was transferred to her son. As parents, we must pray for the same contagious faith that will also fall upon our children as they grow in trusting God more.

The Practice Of Our Lord Of Honoring His Parents

Our Lords practice with respect to honoring parents serves as a commentary on His teaching.

And when He became twelve, they went up there according to the custom of the Feast and as they were returning, after spending the full number of days, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. And His parents were unaware of it, but supposed Him to be in the caravan, and went a days journey and they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. And it came about that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. And when they saw Him, they were astonished and His mother said to Him, Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You. And He said to them, Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Fathers house? And they did not understand this statement which He had made to them. And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth and He continued in subjection to them and His mother treasured all these things in her heart .

It is also in Johns gospel that we find one of the last acts of our Lord upon the cross was done in fulfillment of our Lords obligation to honor his mother.

Do Not Exasperate Your Children

âChildren, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. âHonor your father and motherââwhich is the first commandment with a promiseââso that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.â Fathers, do not exasperate your children instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.â

The Bible doesnât just tell children to obey and honor their parents. It also tells fathers not to do or say things that deeply frustrate their children. The ESV translates âdo not exasperate your childrenâ as âdo not provoke your children to anger.â

A fatherâs goal should be to bring out the best in his children. If a father angers or frustrates his children, heâs leading them into sin and steering them away from what God desires for them. This can be incredibly difficult, and following Paulâs admonition requires fathers to be intimately attuned to their childâs heart and sensitive to their weaknesses.

There aren’t quite as many familiar Bible passages about parents and their adult children. Still, the Bible is not silent on how parents and adult children relate to one another.

The Importance Of Discipline

Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them .

Do not withhold discipline from a child if you punish them with the rod, they will not die .

A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother .

Discipline your children, and they will give you peace they will bring you the delights you desire .

Without discipline, children develop the behavioral patterns that make the most sense to them and thats not good for anyone.

Children raised without discipline bring disgrace to their parents. Their choices reveal that they never had consequences. An absence of consequences is truly a form of neglect. Disciplining children isnt easy. To do it wisely requires a lot of discernment, strategy and effort. But its easier to discipline younger children who are developing than it is to try and fix the problems that a lack of discipline introduces.

Think of it like planting a garden. The proper care of a growing garden is time-consuming. It requires weeding and pruning. But its less work than letting a garden grow however it chooses and then trying to change it after the fact. Once the weeds have overtaken it and all the plants and trees are overgrown or diseased, the effort required to turn things around is immense.

Parenting In The Torah

The Torah includes numerous mitzvotregarding parent-child interaction. Fathers must circumcise sons on their eighth day of life . Parents may not sacrifice their children, neither to a foreign deity nor to God. Incest is strictly forbidden . Parents are responsible for educating their children . First-born sons must be redeemed from the priesthood . Insults to parents are subject to grave punishment .

Honoring parents is among the Ten Commandments the requirement to show them reverence appears in Leviticus . The language of these two commandments provides motivations for their observance. The wording in Exodus states that one who honors parents will lengthen ones life and continue ones link to the land of Israel: Honor your father and your mother so that your days will be lengthened on the land Adonai your God gave to you. The motivation here is one of a promised reward.

In Leviticus, we find that reverence is part of participating in Gods holy plan: And Adonai spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the community of the Children of Israel, and say to them You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy. A man shall revere his mother and his father and observe my Sabbaths I am Adonai your God.

These laws generated much discussion among the rabbis of the Mishnah and Talmud. Much of their wisdom is found in the Talmudic tractate Kiddushin, surrounding the following teaching:

What Does The Bible Have To Say To Parents

Help, I’m a Parent! (Help … I’m Their Kid!)

If you opened up a Bible to the table of contents and looked for the word parenting, youd probably be disappointed. The Bible doesnt have a section focused on instructions for raising kids. While there are some critical passages for parents, they are not laid out like a blog post. Youre not going to find Five Steps for Trouble-Free Potty Training or Tips for Getting Your Teen to Obey the First Time.

You can find thoughtful encouragement in biblical narratives with good and bad examples of parenting. For example, you can read the story of Isaac and Rebekah and discover insights based on their parenting decisions. But these narratives need to be interpreted before you can understand what they have to say about parenting.

There are also many clear instructions in the Bible that apply directly to parenting your kids. Its essential to recognize that the things that Jesus asks His followers to do are the same principles that make you a good parent. Some of the best pieces of parenting advice youll find in the Bible are the calls to make Jesus the Lord of your life that is, to put him in charge of your life and listen to His commands to lead by serving, to love others as you love yourself and to live in a way that displays the fruit of the Spirit, which is the changes that result in your life from following God and walking in His Spirit .

A Prayer For The Kids In Your Life

Holy Father,

Thank you for filling the world with children to bring joy and excitement to the world, as well as to remind us of what it was like to have faith without over-thinking everything. Lord, I lift up the kids in my life, both related to me and those who I know through church and through friends. Bless them with wisdom as they grow. Keep them safe from harm. If there is a way that I can be a blessing to the kids in my life, please reveal it to me. Show me how to be a good example for them, and send them other adults to be godly lights in their lives. Guide them in the way they should go, and reveal to them Your purposes for their lives in Your timing.

In the name of Jesus Christ,

Amen.

The Lord Carried You As A Father Carries His Son

âThen I said to you, âDo not be terrified do not be afraid of them. The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.ââ

âAs a father carries his son,â the Lord carried the Israelites out of slavery, fought off their enemies, provided for them through their wandering in the desert, and brought them into the promised land.

When a child isnât strong enough to do something on their own, their father can carry them through it. Fathers advocate for their children. They provide wisdom and guidance in the face of uncertainty. And with the protection of a loving father, a child doesnât have to be afraid.
