Understanding The Purpose Of Family
Two essential elements of family marriage and parenthood reveal Gods character like nothing else in Creation. The love between a husband and wife provides a glimpse of Christs passionate devotion to us as His bride. In the same way, the ups and downs of parenthood offer a compelling picture of Gods tenderness and patience toward us as His children.
And family does more than reflect Gods character. It provides a safe place where children can experience Gods love and learn how to love other people.
Even Christ himself was born within the context of a family. God in the flesh submitted to an earthly mom and dad to model what it means to honor parents and to benefit from their loving direction. It was within the nurturing care of His earthly family that Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men .
Our children need to know that God has a special purpose for placing them within a family. The following activities and discussions are designed to help your kids explore this truth and to lead them into a deeper appreciation for the family God has given them.
- The family is a masterpiece of Gods Creation.
- God put children in families so they can experience His love and learn how to love others.

Submission In The Context Of Love
One of the beautiful aspects of the Trinity is that God the Father does not dominate or force Christ to submit to him. Submission and authority happen in the context of Gods love for the Son. In fact, in 1 John 4:8, God is defined as love. It just says, God is love. In the context of this loving relationship, the Son submits.
In the same way, as a husband I am not called to demand that my wife submit to me. I am to love her, care for her, encourage her to grow in God, and serve her. My wife is to submit to me willingly. I cannot force it. That also would be a marring of the Godheads relationship.
At the fall, marriage was broken. Submission in the context of a loving relationship was destroyed, and as a result we see brokenness in the majority of marriages. Over fifty percent of marriages end in divorce. The wife tries to control the husband, and the husband tries to rule and dominate the wife. In fact, marriage is becoming redefined totally as no longer simply between one man and one woman. The image of God has been totally distorted and the consequences are disorder in our society. If the home is broken, then you can be sure the education system is broken, and the government is broken since the home is the foundation of society.
ApplicationQuestion: What are some common reactions in society to this teaching? Why is the submission of the wife to her husband so important?
An Implication For Youth Ministry
Before we go to Pauls final exhortation to the members of the family, we should also notice something about youth ministry in the early church. Paul expected that children would be in the audience as this letter was read to the church. He speaks directly to the children, Children obey your parents in the Lord.
The early church met together as a family. It seems the early pattern for worship was for families to worship together and hear Gods Word together. Scripture never commands a clear model of youth ministry other than parents training them at home. However, it is implied both in the Old Testament and the New Testament that children were expected to be with the congregation during worship. For example, with Moses and Joshua, when the words of the covenant were read to the nation of Israel, the children were with the congregation. Consider Deuteronomy 31:93 and Joshua 8:3435:
Afterward, Joshuareadallthewordsofthelawthe blessings and the cursesjust as it is written in the Book of the Law. There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read tothewholeassemblyofIsrael, includingthewomenandchildren, andthealienswholivedamongthem .
Let me encourage you: children going to childrens ministry or youth ministry during corporate worship is OK. But it is not necessary. There is something special about families worshiping and studying the Word of God together, and one should seek to have that as often as possible, in public worship, small groups, etc.

Creation Of Adam And Eve
To understand what God intended for men, we need to start in the beginning, at the creation of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman.
In Genesis 2 we see that Adam was created before Eve. Adam was given the task of naming all of the animals. It seems clear that at least part of the purpose for this was to help him realize that none of these creatures were comparable to him. Every other creature had its mate but Adam was at that point alone, the only one of his kind .
After he was done naming all the animals, God then created a very special blessing for hima woman fashioned from Adams own rib. The connection between them was undeniable. Together they had a onenessthey formed a family, a complete unit .

Conflicts Are Resolved Constructively And Promptly
While you may not mean to, there may be times when you offend those closest to you or hurt their feelings. Misunderstandings are a normal part of family life. But if the parties do not make amends with each other, they can lead to bitterness and grudges on both sides. Communication and respect then start to wane, mistrust builds, and family camaraderie disappears.
When offenses occur in healthy families, bad feelings are not allowed to fester. Conflicts are resolved quickly. The offender is willing to apologize and take responsibility for his or her mistakes. The offended person listens carefully to the perspectives of the family member with whom he or she is at odds, and is quick to forgive. They talk things out without attacking each other personally, while still addressing the issues. No one goes to bed angry . Each person knows the other cares about the relationship, even though they clashed on a particular issue.
If parents have wronged their children, they will take the lead in repairing the relationships. That includes being willing to apologize. Mr. Register remembers this very constructive practice from his childhood. My parents would occasionally come to me and let me know they were sorry for something they did or said, he recalls. Their example helped me know that they were human and also taught me to apologize and forgive.
Jesus Taught About Marriage
Jesus Christ taught that marriage is holy and essential to Gods plan: From the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder .

She Loves Her Husband
Titus 2:4 calls for wives to love their husbands. A wife is called to accept her husband as he is an imperfect person. Because Paul tells husbands to love their wives and wives to respect their husbands in Ephesians 5:33, there are some who think this means that a Christian wife doesnt have to love her husband but thats not true at all. As Christians, we are called to love our brothers and sisters in Christ which is especially true in marriage. When a man and a woman get married, they make a vow before God to stay together until death parts them. If youre in a relationship thats one-sided, youre headed for trouble.

How Does God Define Family
God has chosen the framework of the family to help us understand authority and His plan in our life. The structure of the family is vital to so many other laws, principles and teachings in the Bible. If it is so important, it is also important to understand what Gods plan for the family is so that we can understand the rest of His Word as it applies to us today.
God instituted the family in Genesis 2:18 when He said, It is not good that the man should be alone I will make him an help meet for him. He then formed Eve from a rib of Adam as told in verses 21-24 part of which says, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Then in Ephesians 5:31 God says the same thing in the New Testament. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Within the family God has given its members roles and responsibilities.
God brought Adam and Eve together and established the basis for the family. This basis is a man and a woman. Even though Adam and Eve did not have parents, God instituted at that time the principle that a man and woman would depart from their parents and family unit to begin a new family unit.
Without a man and a woman coming together in marriage, there is no family.
