The Worlds Definition Of Love

What the Bible REALLY Says About True Love.

Most people use the word love loosely. They love their teamthey love to winthe love the spring, but this is not really the essence of love. The dictionaries definition of love is a tender affection for someone or something a romantic or sexual feeling for someone to like something or someone very much. None of these definitions will help someone who is looking for true love that would lead to marriage. Love is not just a noun, it is a verb its what you do that is truly love. For example, Christ loves the church. Did He just have affection or feelings for them? No! He loved the church so much that He took action. He died for those who would come to Him in trusting faith. For any that come to Him and place their trust in Him, His blood was spilled so that they could have an eternal relationship with Him and the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus love was so powerful that He willingly gave His life for those who belong to Him.

Real Love Grows Over Time

You dont “fall” into real loveyou grow into it. You have to know a person before you can love that person with real love. It is impossible to truly know someone at first sight, and it is also impossible to have real love for someone at first sight. You may be attracted to someone at first sight. You may even be “turned on” by someone at first sight. But you cannot genuinely love a person whom you do not really know.

Satan does not want you to know and experience true love. That is why he promotes all kinds of false love. He wants you to get involved in sex outside of marriage. He wants to generally mess up your life so that you think life is not worth living.

Bible Verses About Finding Love ~ Letting Him Find You

Bible verses about finding love: He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22

I have written about not chasing a man so many times. Because he who finds a wife finds a good thing. You do not need to give off the aroma of desperation in order to look for love. When it is right, love will find you.

Bible verses about finding love: Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires. Song of Solomon 8:4

With the above being said, it is better to not jump into finding love until it is time. Do not jump and leap into a situation before you are ready. You have to trust Gods timing and that love will awaken when it is time. You wont have to force it.

Defining Different Definitions Of Love

Love can be defined in different ways because there are different types of love. The answer to the question, What is love for you? can differ for everyone, depending on the relationship in context.

As per the Cambridge dictionary, love is defined asliking another adult very much and being romantically and sexuallyattracted to them or having strongfeelings of liking a friend or person in yourfamily.

While this is a more literal definition of the word, love can be defined in many other ways.

Love Lifts Up Others And Isnt Self

If someone loves the way God calls us to love, they will put the feelings and well-being of those they love above their own feelings and well-being. One of the greatest examples of this kind of love is that of a parent and child. What mother wont go without a new dress in order to give her child the soccer cleats he/she needs? What mother wont suddenly be so full they cant eat another bite when their little one asks if they can have the last cookie? What parent doesnt go without something they want in order to make sure their childs eyes light up in delight on Christmas morning?

Unfortunately I have witnessed parents who dont know this kind of love. Ive seen parents standing in line at the grocery store buying tobacco, alcohol, and energy drinks while at the same time yelling at their preschooler for asking if they can have a candy bar from the display in the checkout line. God calls us to be better than this. He calls us to love with a love that puts others firstjust like he puts us first.

Agape Love In The Bible

The Greeks understood proper agape as a general love for all people.

In the Bible, itâs said that Christians should care for everyone. But early Christians took that idea a step further, using God as the standard for true agape.

A love that flows from God, according to the Bible, is true agape love. He’s characterized by love that isn’t sentimental. From the depths of His being, God loves.

The love God shows us is undeserved, gracious, and selfless.

In sending Jesus to save us, God demonstrated agape love in its purest form: unconditional love. When God sent Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners, He showed us the standard for agape love. We saw the true love of the Heavenly Father as we felt the depth of His love through Jesus.

God commands us to love others with agape love. Through actions, agape is a clear choice to work for the highest good of another.

Love In The Old Testament

Jesus said that the greatest commandment in the Old Testament was, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind . The second commandment was, Love your neighbor as yourself . Then he said, On these two commandments hang all the law and prophets . This must mean that if a person understood and obeyed these two commandments, he would understand and fulfill what the whole Old Testament was trying to teach. Everything in the Old Testament, when properly understood, aims basically to transform men and women into people who fervently love God and their neighbor.

Gary Chapman wrote a popular and excellent book called The 5 Love Languages. In it, he describes the five different things people in relationships can do to make the other feel loved. The book helps you learn your mates love language so you can speak it and have a successful marriage. The languages are:

  • Words of Affirmation
  • Acts of Service
  • Physical Touch
  • First of all, I read this book and I really like it. As a psychologist, Chapman discovered 5 different actions humans receive that make them feel good. I said feel good, because thats all it is this is not love. These are good things to express to people but not without the foundation of Gods love.

    Different Kinds Of Love

The Greek language uses two differentwords to describe and define love. The most commonly used Greek word translated”love” in the New Testament is “agape.” This love isrepresented by God’s love for us. It is a non-partial, sacrificial love probablybest exemplified by God’s provision for our rebellion:

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

The gift3 of God’s son as a provision for sin4was given to all humans,5 regardless of who we are.6God’s love is unconditional.7

In contrast, our love is usually conditional and based upon how other peoplebehave toward us. This kind of love is based upon familiarity and directinteraction. The Greek word “phileo” defines this kind of love, oftentranslated “brotherly love.” Phileo is a soulish kind of love – something that can be experienced by both believersand non-believers. This is in contrast to agape, which is love extended throughthe spirit. Agape love requires a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, since the non-regenerated soul is unable to love unconditionally. Agape lovegives and sacrifices expecting nothing back in return.8

Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart,

The most famous biblical chapter on love is from 1 Corinthians:

    Can We Become Love Experts

We are being taught by the ultimate Lover. Gods love is poured out into our hearts . The Holy Spirit works within us to guide and empower our lives. We are called to live in love. And John wonders how we can claim to love God if we close our hearts to others. Our love should not be just words and talk it must be true love, which shows itself in action .

Becoming love experts will demand more than gooey sentimentality. Its the difficult business of listening to others, learning what they really need, and applying Gods resources to challenging situations. Can that become what were known for?

Bible engagement never stops with the knowledge of facts and ideas. It presses on to significant life change. And Scripture repeatedly invites us into a loving relationship with God, which plays out in loving actions toward others.

What Is The Meaning Of Love To Live In The Moment Is To Love

Generally, we are seeking love from others to make us happy. When we are living in the moment, we are already happy because the thoughts that would normally make us unhappy arent there. Since we are naturally happy when we are living in the moment, there is nothing we need or want from others. We can stop looking for others to make us happy whether that is looking to them to love us, or just fill our needs. If there is nothing we want from others, then we are just free to love.

We dont have to worry about whether other people will love us, leave us, or make us happy, because we are already happy. None of that matters when we are already content. We are free to purely love others, and we completely forget about the idea of seeking love.

    What Prevents Us From Loving

THE TRUE DEFINITION OF LOVE ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE

To understand what is the meaning of love, we really need to understand what prevents us from loving. When we believe our judgments about someone, we can feel anger, disappointment, or resentment, or we can just feel separate from that person. All of this blocks us or prevents us from loving the person we are with.

When we are with someone, and believing our judgments, commentary, or labels about them, this puts up a wall or a barrier between us. We arent connecting with them, loving them, and truly being with them. We are just experiencing our thoughts about them. For example, we might experience our thoughts about how they arent appreciative enough, arent in good enough shape, arent a good enough father etc. But these thoughts just get in the way of love.

Love Protects Perseveres And Never Fails

There really isnt anything I can say to expound on this statement. The words speak for themselves. When you love and experience love Gods way, your relationships will not be dependent on geography or what you can or cannot do for each other. Your relationships will stand the test of time and distance and you will protect these relationships by holding them close to your heartby cherishing them for the treasure they are by treating them with respect and withwell, with love.

The seven primary elements of love are the elements that make up Gods treatment of us. But why shouldnt it be, because thats what love is and God is love.

Love May Be Our Cultures Unknown God

When a halftime show ends with the crowd spelling out Believe in Love, that could be an inspiring moment . . . and also a challenging one. Love may be the unknown God of our culture, similar to what Paul encountered in Athensand we can learn from the apostles approach . He affirmed the Athenians, quoted their own pop songs , and challenged them to learn more about a God who could be known.

Can we leverage our cultures affirmation of love to convey what true love really is?

What Does The Bible Say About Love How Does God Love

The Greek word for spiritual love is agape, which according to Dictionary.com, means:

    • The love of God or Christ for humankind.
    • The love of Christians for other persons, corresponding to the love of God for humankind.
    • Unselfish love of one person for another without sexual implications brotherly love.

    1. Spiritual love is not self-love, but rather self-sacrificing love.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth .

According to this passage, Jesus is the reason we even know what spiritual love is! In laying down His life for us, He taught us everything we need to know about true love.

    2. Spiritual love is generous, not selfish or greedy.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins .

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life .

    3. Spiritual love is unending, not a temporary feeling, emotion, or attraction.

    4. Spiritual love is undeserving and often unreciprocated.
