What The Bible Says

What Does the Bible Say About Work?

The Bible promotes a balanced view of work. It praises industriousness and condemns laziness. At the same time, the Bible does not endorse workaholism. Rather, it encourages us to enjoy reasonable periods of relaxation. Ecclesiastes 4:6 says: Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of hard work and chasing after the wind. So we should not become so wrapped up in our work that we neglect our family or our health. There is no merit in working ourselves to death!

There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and find enjoyment in his hard work.Ecclesiastes 2:24.

Explaining What the Bible Says About Work by David Pawson ...

Did you enjoy a bowl of warm oatmeal and a cup of hot coffee? How about a batch of scrambled eggs and bacon? Or, did you pick up something through a drive-thru on your way to work?

Regardless of what you ate this morning, countless people participated in Godâs work of providing you your daily bread. A Diligent Worker Is Hard

What does the Bible say about work and our attitude towards it ? Dr. Andrew Vuksic

7. 2 Timothy 2:6-7 And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things.

8. Proverbs 10:4-5 Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

9. Proverbs 6:7-8 Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.

10. Proverbs 12:24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor.

11. Proverbs 28:19-20 A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies ends up in poverty. The trustworthy person will get a rich reward, but a person who wants quick riches will get into trouble.

What The Bible Says About Finding Joy In Your Work

Bible Verses About Work [What Does it Say?]

Alexandra Arndt

It seems like there’s always something to do and somewhere to be.

I often think,

Once I finish my to-do list, then I won’t feel so stressed.

But as soon as one task is done, another quickly takes its place!

Sometimes life feels like an endless race. There are days when all the things I must do feel overwhelming. One look at my to-do list makes me want to crawl right back into bed.

Even worse, sometimes my tasks seem useless and boring.

I wish I was doing something more important, something more exciting, but instead, Im folding mountains of laundry, wiping messy mouths, and scrubbing dishes.

Who cares if I get these things done?

Isnt there something better I could be doing for Gods Kingdom?

Gods Word gives me hopeful and encouraging answers when feeling overwhelmed or useless.

Read these 5 short Bible passages and maybe you will start to see your work in a different light.

What The Bible Says About Our Work

Todays question comes from Stephen Scaggs, who writes, Paul often gives a theology to work. Will we work in the new creation? What does it mean their work follows them? In connection to the bodily resurrection, what does it mean when Paul says our work is not in vain? Should we love our work?

In response to these excellent questions, Wes and Travis discuss work, career, and vocation. According to the Bible, work is part of creation and not part of the curse. But if that is true, how did the Fall affect mankinds work? The most important part of this Bible study is how the Good News of Gods new creation impacts the way we work.

We hope you find this conversation encouraging.

Bible Passages Discussed:

Work Is A Tool Through Which We Honor God And Bless Humanity

If we work only to put food on the table, keep clothes on our back, and a roof over our heads, we miss works most important purpose .

The apostle Paul knew this, and shared these words of wisdom:

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24

Paul directed these words to slaves.

Joseph understood this principle when he was sold as a slave to Potiphar, then went to prison falsely accused, and later served as governor of Egypt . In each of these settings, Joseph made it his priority to honor God and bless humanity.

If Id considered my job cleaning up the pizza toppings as an act of loving service to God and others, rather than just a source of income, my attitude about it would have been positive. I probably would have kept the job longer. My next job was as a janitor. Its not like I left for a better job!

What It Means For You

What Does the Bible Say About Work?

Be industrious at your work. Take a real interest in it. Even if what you do seems menial or is not the type of work you feel you were born for, endeavor to become skillful at it. Industrious work leads to a sense of accomplishment, and developing your skill might actually increase your job satisfaction.

At the same time, be balanced. Enjoy occasional rest and relaxation. These periods are even more enjoyable after we have worked diligently. Also, by earning our necessities, we build a sense of self-worth and win the respect of othersincluding our family.2 Thessalonians 3:12.

Never be anxious and say, What are we to eat? or, What are we to drink? or, What are we to wear? . . . Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.Matthew 6:31, 32.

We Are Part Of Gods Grand Plan For Creation

In Jeremiah 29:5-7, God encouraged the Hebrews in exile to build families, work hard, and pray for the cities where they lived. God says, In its welfare, you will find your welfare. As you and your family explore what the Bible says about work, remember that it is an incredible thing that the values of the kingdom of God become the fruit of our labor. These values can be signposts to the people around us, demonstrating that there is a God and that He built us to find meaning and purpose in Him.

What Jesus Says About Work To His Disciples

1. Jesus defines work. Right up front, Jesus defines what matters most about work. My food, Jesus says to His disciples, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work . Do God the Fathers will until its finished. It doesnt get any better than that!

2. Jesus assigns credit. During His first evangelistic outreach, Jesus sees many Samaritans come to believe He is the Savior of the world. Then Jesus turns around and reminds His disciples, I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor . This reminds us to always give credit where credit is due .

3. Jesus includes miracles. The disciples notice a man born blind and question Jesus. Neither this man nor his parents sinned, Jesus says in John 9:3 NIV, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. Gods will doesnt stop when we believe. It goes on to do Gods will, including Jesus doing miracles.

4. Jesus says work now. In John 9:4 NIV, Jesus says, As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. Jesus isnt speaking about working during daylight hours. Instead, Hes talking about working now, not later. Never hesitate to do Gods clear-cut, biblical, and wisely confirmed will.

Things God Says About Work

Jesus has taken the âthorns and thistlesâ we work among , and he wore a crown of thorns on his head as a reminder that he is indeed the âKing of kings and Lord of lordsâ .

The crown of thorns the Roman soldiers placed on Jesusâ head with the intent of mocking him, turned out to be a picture of Jesusâ rule and reign as the one true King.

As our Lord Jesus works to redeem all things, he has redeemed your life through faith in him. He has delivered you from the penalty and power of sin, and through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, you are empowered to redeem your work for the glory of God and the good of others.

In the words of Stephen Nichols, âChrist through his redemptive work undone what Adam did in the fall. And he restores to us the ability and the capacity to be image bearers as God intended us to be.â

In redeeming your work, here are three ways you will find God at work in you and through you in bible verses about work.

Giving Up Sugar Tasting God’s Goodness

As a latchkey kid, Wendy Speake turned to sugar for comfort. Every Friday, she would pedal to the candy show and use her allowance to fill her bag with candy. And one day, when she was older and a mom of three young boys, she came to realize that she was still pedaling away from her stress and using sugar as comfort, instead of turning to Jesus. She was joyless, worn out, tired, and in need of a change. In this interview, Wendy will challenge Christians to take 40 days to focus on fasting from something they turn to instead of Jesus for comfort. She invited people to break free from a dependence on sugar and taste the goodness of God.
