Why Should You Teach Your Kids How To Read The Bible

What is in the Bible? – Bible For Kids

Were told that All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work .

The importance of reading Gods Word is clear, and its certainly a habit worth passing down to our kids. So, how do we do that? Well, its a bit more nuanced than simply telling your child to read the Bible.

How To Teach The Bible Without Boring Kids

If God is everywhere, is he in the bookshelf? our then-five-year-old asked.

Um, not exactly I replied, Or maybe yes, since he is everywhere? … But then again, were not pantheists, hes not in a plank of wood … You know, Ill get back to you on that!

How had I not thought to research how Gods omnipresence intersects with pantheism before our bedtime Bible stories?!

Family Bible times dont always go where we expect them to. To be honest, sometimes they dont even start how we intend! Someone is shoving their brother, another child only seems capable of being upside down Their attention span is suddenly so short! And yet the Bible is full of gripping true stories, entertaining illustrations, and of course is Gods life-changing word.

So is Bible time distraction just a spiritual battle, or can we do more to help?

“When Jesus and the Old Testament prophets communicated God’s Word, they also used engaging communication methods like stories, pictures, questions, and drama.”

Gods Word Brings Clarity To Our Lives

There are many times in life where we are faced with situations where the path before us seems unclear but Gods Word has a way of grounding us and bringing light and clarity to the choices and decisions we face in life.

The unfolding of your words gives light it gives understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:130

Bibles For Bigger Kids & Independent Readers

We continue to revisit our favorite Bible storybooks even as the kids grow , but we transition the kids into a full-text Bible of their own around 6 years old. Sometime between six and eight years old also tends to be the time we begin helping the kids develop their own quiet time, so having their own Bible isnt only important but exciting too.

The Jesus Storybook Bible For ages 5+

A lot of people recommend this story Bible for younger children, but my kids never appreciated it until they were a little bit older. Personally, I found the JSB to be incredibly impactful reading it as an adult. I recommend the JSB for kids over 6 years old, but I especially recommend it for adults! If you do read this one with younger kids, we have found the DVD set incredibly helpful for bigs AND littles

The International Childrens Bible For ages 6+

This is a great Bible option for kids, even elementary-aged and middle-grade kids. The text is written for kids, which helps make it understandable, digestible, and applicable for kids.

The ICB might not be the best Bible option for Scripture memory or the Bible they take with them to college, but it makes a GREAT transition Bible through the elementary years.

The ICB is actually the Bible I recommend for kids going through our You Already Are devotional journal for kids.

Where Do I Start In The Bible Are Your Kids Bored With It

120 Copies of Bible STORIES for Kids #1 Listening CD ...

how am I keeping my kids from getting sick of me reading the Bible to them over breakfast and lunch.I would love to be able to sit down and memorize some scripture and spend time learning about Gods word. I am a very new beginner and my question is where do you start? I dont belong to a church and have been intimidated on how to get started along this journey. I feel like if I just open up the Bible and begin somewhere, Ill be lost or extremely confused since I have not read the Bible before at all. Any suggestions for me?

Oh Anonymous I am so glad you asked! Bear with me my answer is LONG :

The Bible can be a challenge to read because it does not read like an ordinary book from cover to cover. It was written over thousands of years, by nearly 40 authors and in several languages. To put it in simple terms, the Old Testament gives us a foundation for who God is, his character and the foreshadowing of Christs coming. The New Testament is about Jesus life, crucifixion, resurrection, the spread of the gospel and instructions for Christian living.

So where do you start? Let me go book by book in order of where they fall in the Bible and explain it I will give you my recommendations as I go. Hold on to your seat cause here we go on a ride through the entire Bible!

The Book of Genesistells us how God created the world, how mankind fell into sin, and the impact of the fall. This book is necessary for a complete understanding of Gods word.

The Story Of Creation

Look back in time at how God created the world in six days.

Origin

The Old Testament Book of Genesis, Chapter One.

Story

In the beginning, there was nothing everything was formless, and darkness covered the surface of everything. Only God existed. One day, God commanded that there should be light, and the light was created. On the first day of creation, God made night and day. On the second day, God created the sky to separate the waters.

On the third day, the creation of land and sea took place. He also commanded that the land produce vegetation and seed-bearing plants, and that they must all multiply according to their own kind. On the fourth day, God created the sun, the moon and the stars, in order to serve as markers for the day, the night, the years, and the sacred times. On the fifth day, God created all the living creatures in the sea and the air, and commanded that they should multiply according to their own kinds.

On the sixth day, the creation of all the land animals was done, and he commanded them all to go forth and multiply across the earth, according to their own kind. Then, he formed man out of the dust of the earth and breathed life into him. From the rib of the man, he created the woman, and he gave man and woman authority over all the earth.

God was pleased by all that He created, and on the seventh day, God rested.

Moral

God is all-powerful and created all that exists.

Story Bibles For Little Ones

We have quite a collection of Bible storybooks for little ones, but these are our favorites ::

The Tiny Tots Bible For ages: 0-3

This is one of the first story Bibles I read with my kids. The simple language engages the understanding of my preschoolers, while the bold, bright colors capture the attention of even our babies. Only 14 main Bible stories are included in this story Bible, but it is a favorite of ours.

Read-Aloud Bible Stories For ages: 1-6.

All of my kids have loved reading these volumes over and over again. The pictures are a little different and keep the kids attention, and all of the stories emphasize God as the hero.

The Big Picture Story Bible For ages: 2-7

My preschoolers have loved this Bible, and the bonus is the audio CDs, so the kids can listen to the story as they read. We love that it emphasizes the Bible as one big story with Jesus at the center, and the stories are told simply enough for preschoolers to understand and remember.

The Giant Goliath Was Killed By A Young Boy Named David With One Stone

And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him but there was no sword in the hand of David.

Looking for a Bible for your kids?

The options for picking out a childrens Bible can be a little overwhelming, so were sharing how to choose a Bible for your kids and our favorite kids Bibles.

These recommendations will help you choose a Bible thats a great fit for your childs age and interests, so you can order a new Bible for your kids today!

Picking a Bible for our kids can feel overwhelming at times.

Numerous kids Bibles line the shelves, but not all of them are great options. Some Bibles are better picks than others.

Ive read a few kids Bibles that never mention sin and others shy away from talking about Gods judgement. This is a huge problem!

If we arent given a full picture of Gods character and if our Bibles dont talk about sin and we are never confronted with our sin, we will never recognize our need for a Savior!

Over and over again, the Bible tells the true story of a holy God who did everything to rescue us from ourselves, to save us from our sin that we might have a relationship with Him and live our lives for His glory.

So its important to evaluate the Bible you choose for your family.

Today Im sharing some of our favorite Bible options for kids and families.

Read Aloud Bible Storiesfor Ages: Infants 3

We love this classic childrens story Bible for three reasons. 1) God is the hero not the people. At the end of each narrative is a helpful page titled What did you learn? It states a few brief God-centered points in order to promote discussion with your child. 2) Lindvall has the gift of reducing complicated Bible concepts down to simple ones while remaining faithful to the original text. 3) The illustrations by H. Kent Puckett have always captured the attention of my young kids as we read together before bed. With large pages full of colorful and simple images, the kids eyes are glued to what is happening in the story.

Intro Game : Follow The Leader

The Childrens Bible in 365 Stories

The Class Teacher chooses a Leader. Students must follow the Leader in every way, going where they go and doing what they do. Play for a specified amount of time and then choose a new Leader. Play until everyone has had a chance to be Leader or until students lose interest. After the game, explain that todays lesson is about why we should study the Bible. When we study the Bible, we are learning how to play Follow the Leader. God and Jesus are our Leaders and the Bible tells us everything we need to know to follow Them. The Bible tells us how we can live the way Jesus lived and how we can do the things that God is happy for us to do.

The Big Picture Story Bible For Ages: 3 7

This has been my kids go-to Bible during the preschool years and even early elementary. They have learned so much from it. The advantages of this one are that it comes with a free audio download of the author reading the stories, it emphasizes the Bible has one big story with Jesus at the center, and the stories have depth but are simple enough for preschoolers. Note: One thing I noticed is that all the people in this storybook have white skin, which isnt a true representation of what people in the Middle East would have looked like at that time. A lot of older childrens Bibles make this mistake, but the content is still really great. I hope they update the illustrations for accuracy at some point.

What Is The Bible

The Bible is that big, old looking book that sits on mommy and daddy’s shelf. But it’s more than just a big old book! The Bible is full of adventure, mystery, and rules that we should all follow. But most importantly, everywhere you look in the Bible, you will find a promise from God.

The Old Testament Promise: The Saviour is coming The New Testament Promise: The Saviour has come

The Bible was not written by just one person, but was written by many different authors — each one of them guided by God.

The Bible is made up of 2 different, but connected books – The Old Testament and The New Testament. The Old Testament is made up of 39 smaller books. The New Testament is made up of 27. All of these books are also divided into chapters and each chapter contains many different verses.

We’ve already learned some of the stories from the Bible. It’s a very exciting book! In the Old Testament, we read about the creation of the whole universe, huge floods, burning bushes and major showdowns where God helps the little guys win. In the New Testament, we will read even more exciting stories about an evil king and a tiny baby who turns out to be the most important person that ever lived!

The New Testament tells us how God’s promise that he made in The Old Testament came true. The New Testament is all about the birth, life, teachings, death and resurrection of a very special person named Jesus Christ.

Fun Bible Facts For Kids And Sunday School

I love sharing with children in Sunday school some of the fun facts about the Bible. Many children do not understand that the Bible is the actual word of God that He inspired men to write. Sharing things about the Bible and even some fun things that are in the Bible is a great way for children to learn about God. Here are 10 fun Bible facts that you can share with your Sunday school kids. It might even be fun to challenge the kids with a Bible verse that they can take home to their parents who can help them discover a fun fact for themselves.
