The word grace is mentioned about 150 times in the NT. Paul used this word more than any other NT author, for it shows some 100 times in his letters. Luke, his assistant used the word about 25 times in his gospel and the book of Acts. Thus, the word grace used by these two writers constituted five sixths of all the NT references.

Giving joy

Mainly, the word grace means that which gives joy or pleasure, giving the meaning of beauty or loveliness . We see this in the New Testament, when Jesus spoke in Nazareth. For His hearers wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth . Likewise, Paul counseled the believers at Colossae that their speech should be alway with grace .

Pleasant feeling

Also, grace gives the meaning of a beautiful or pleasant feeling expressed toward a person, such as sympathy, gentleness, or kindness. Joseph found favor, literally, grace, in the sight of Pharaoh . And we read that when Jesus was a boy the grace of God was upon him . Also, when the disciples spoke the truth they had favor, literally, grace, with all the people .

Thankfulness

Gift of love

In Addition, grace means a gift, a favor or a help, as an expression of good will. The Jews came to Festus and asked for a favor, literally, grace, for Paul . And the apostle Paul wrote of the gift that the churches had collected for the poor at Jerusalem as, literally, the grace .

Grace As Power For Living

But then Heather rightly notices another group of passages, also in Paul, where he comes at grace a little differently.

  • 2 Corinthians 9:8: God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. Now, that seems to picture grace as a power or an influence for obedience.

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9: Jesus says to Paul, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:10: By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.

In all three of those texts and theyre not the only ones grace is not only a disposition or a quality or an inclination in the nature of God, but is an influence or a force or a power or an acting of God that works in us to change our capacities for work and suffering and obedience.

How To Receive Gods Grace

Hopefully now you have a deeper understanding of Gods grace meaning for your life. I want to end by looking at how we receive it.

Weve already looked at how grace is a gift that we can do nothing to earn. However that doesnt mean that we do nothing.

Just like if I were to hand you a present on your birthday you have to actually extend your hands to receive it and then open it to enjoy it. Similarly to receive Gods grace we have to posture ourselves to receive it.

Accept It

As we have seen Gods grace has been extended to all. Not a single person is exempt. But God will not force this gift on anyone, it has to be accepted. Why? Because permission is sacred. God will not force human beings to follow him because what he wants is a relationship not subservience.

The first step to receiving Gods grace is to accept it.

Another way of saying this is to put your faith in God, the work of Jesus. When we place our hope in Gods only son we are accepting his gift of grace. Its the act of holding out our hands to accept the gift he has for us.

Turn Away

When we accept Gods grace it means we have to turn away from the things our life used to be about. Why? Because you cant go in two directions at the same time. Grace gives us a new life, therefore we have to leave the old behind.

In order to step into the abundant life God has for us we have to leave behind our old life. We have to turn away so that we can turn toward God.

What Is Gods Grace

Bible Meaning of Grace

Confession When I read blog posts I typically skip over the Bible verses I know, I know. Im a terrible Christian. Thank God for his grace.

If you are like me I would encourage you to not do that in this blog post. Actually read the verses and think about what they teach you about Gods grace.

With that in mind, lets jump into 7 facets of Gods grace. What is Gods grace? Heres what you need to know.

1. Gods Grace Is Forgiveness

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:23-24

This is probably what we think about most when we think of Gods grace. Its forgiveness from our sins. The gift of salvation.

The Bible teaches us that grace is a gift of God. Our mistakes, our sin, condemn us and separate us from God. But God doesnt leave us to the deal with the consequences of our sin. On the cross Jesus Christ displayed his great love for us by taking on what we deserved.

The grace of God gives us what we need instead of what we deserve. In our time of need God provides us with divine assistance. The act of grace is not what we deserve, but its what we are in desperate need of.

What is Gods grace? It allows us to live in freedom from our sin and enter back into relationship with God.

2. Gods Grace Is Undeserved

The beauty of Gods grace can only be fully understood when we realize how fallen, broken, and undeserving we are.

3. Gods Grace Is New Everyday

Draw Near With Confidence

So, let me end with a precious verse that we all know and love and maybe have never thought about in this term of grace. Hebrews 4:16: Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace. Thats a throne with the quality and the character and the inclination to treat people better than they deserve. Thats the kind of throne were coming to. But then it says, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Or a more literal translation: that we may find mercy and grace for a well-timed help.

It is incredibly encouraging that Gods grace is both the inclination of the divine heart to treat us better than we deserve and is the extension of that inclination in practical help.

Gods Grace Is Rich And Glorious

To the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. Eph 1:6

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. Eph 1:7

So that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Eph 2:7

The Importance Of Grace

What is Grace in the Bible – How does the Bible Define Grace

Grace is more than a nice-sounding concept it is something that we need every day.

We know that Paul writes a lot about grace in his letters to the various churches in the New Testament.

Paul writes of his need for grace every day all the time. We also need grace every day all the time.

In 2 Corinthians 12 Paul talks about a thorn in his side. There was something that he labeled a thorn in his flesh, he pleaded with God three times that he should take it away. This thorn made him less dependent on himself and more dependent on God and His grace every day.

But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Corinthians 12:9

It is in our imperfections and weakness we see the beauty of Gods grace shine through in our lives.

We can look at this word grace all day, and even read throughout scripture as God shows grace, but it becomes so much more prevalent in our lives when we accept it for ourselves and live in the grace given to us by God.

Grace is important because the gospel is important. The gospel is important because it is our salvation from being forever separated from God because of our sins.

Grace is entwined in the history of the world. God created us and loved us, but we sinned but he kept showing his love to us even as we continued to turn away from him.

A brief survey of the top fifty best-selling Christian books reveals what subjects are of the greatest and least interest to the majority of professing Christians. Books on purpose, finances, personality, self-esteem, love languages, and relational boundaries dominate the list. Books on the triune God, Christ, sin, the gospel, Scripture, preaching, the sacraments, prayer, church discipline, and the local church are woefully wanting. Since Jesus Christ and His saving work form the foundation of our faith , we should be most concerned about knowing how to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ . Our growth in the grace of Christ will be commensurate with our use of the means God has appointed. Theologians refer to these as means of grace .

The means of grace are Gods appointed instruments by which the Holy Spirit enables believers to receive Christ and the benefits of redemption. Although He could have chosen to reveal Christ immediately to His people, He has determined instead to do so through certain means. God assigned the Word, sacraments, and prayer to be the foremost means by which He communicates Christ and His benefits to believers.

Christian Meanings: What Is Grace

Grace. It is a word that is thrown around a lot, especially in church and among Christian friends, but what is it? What does the word grace mean? By the simplest definition grace is unmerited favor or unconditional love. While this is a fine definition on its own, the problem is that we still have to define the definition.

First, lets start with unmerited. To merit something means to earn it or deserve it. A child might merit a special treat by good behavior or by doing chores. In the Boy Scouts of America, young boys can earn Merit Badges by showing that they know how to do something or can explain it to others. Boy Scouts cannot earn these badges unless they have completed the required activities, thus meriting the badge. So unmerited then means to receive something that you did not earn or something that you do not deserve. In the same way unconditional means that something is not limited by conditions, such as our good behavior.

So how does God show grace to us? God shows grace to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. When He was on the cross, Jesus took all the punishment that we deserved and placed it on Himself. On the cross, Jesus gave us the gift of a relationship with God, something that we cannot earn by ourselves nor do we deserve. God loves His children so much that He shows them grace by Christ taking away all of the punishment that we get for disobeying God and giving us good gifts instead.

Frustrating The Grace Of God

Hebrews 12:15Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled

It is possible for us to frustrate the grace of God. One way to do that is to try to achieve justification by good works or law keeping. Another way is to allow things by bitterness and unforgiveness into our hearts .

The Hebrew Word For Defining Grace

So what is the true meaning of grace in the Bible? When we ...

Lets start at the beginning. The first use of the word grace in the Bible is found in Genesis 6:8: But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

The Hebrew word used here to define grace is indeed hen. Its derivative, hanan , is often translated as to be gracious or have mercy . In Psalm 6:2, the Psalmist says,

Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am languishing heal me, O LORD, for my bones are troubled.

However, for example in Proverbs 17:8, the same word hen, is translated as precious, something of beauty and value: A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it .

You have probably heard grace defined as unmerited favor. And in the Bible, it is often paired with another great word, mercy, which of course, has a different Hebrew equivalent. So, whats the difference? And in what way is each one of them unique? Lets look to the Bible for answers.

Wesley And Arminian Theology

Later, John Wesley also rejected the Calvinist doctrine of predestination. His most comprehensive pronouncement on the subject was his sermon “Free Grace”, preached at Bristol in 1740. In Wesley’s position, the believer who repents and accepts Christ is not “making himself righteous” by an act of his own will, such as would alter his dependency on the grace of God for his salvation. Faith and repentance, rather, are the believer’s trust in God that he will make them righteous. Wesley appealed to prevenient grace as a solution to the problem, stating that God makes the initial move in salvation, but human beings are free to respond or reject God’s graceful initiative.

John Wesley believed that God provides three kinds of divine grace:

  • Prevenient grace is innate from birth. “Prevenient” means “comes before.” Wesley did not believe that humanity was totally “depraved.” He believed everyone is born with a modicum of divine grace just enough to enable the individual to recognize and accept God’s justifying grace.
  • Justifying grace today is what is referred to as “conversion” or being “born again.” God’s justifying grace brings “new life in Christ.” Wesley believed that people have freedom of choice to accept or to reject God’s justifying grace. Wesley defined his term Justifying grace as “The grace or love of God, whence cometh our salvation, is FREE IN ALL, and FREE FOR ALL.”

What Is The Spiritual Meaning Of Grace

The meaning of spiritual grace is an important aspect of our society. It mends broken relationships and gives us a chance to spread positive energy to those around us.

It also has a way of helping us eradicate the negativity around us by inspiring others to have love and mercy on others no matter what the circumstances are.

To fully understand to incorporate grace in your everyday life and how to spread it, you must understand the spiritual meaning behind the word.

What Is The Point Of Hesed Rachamim And Hen

What is the True Meaning of Grace?

The answer is very simpleGod wants to restore us, to bring us back into relationship with Him and those He has placed in our lives. In Romans 2:4, the Apostle Paul says that Gods kindness is meant to bring us back to repentance. But His will is grace and favor. Exodus 34: 6 concludes:

Adonai, merciful , and gracious , slow to anger, abounding in love and truth .

The end result is that Gods love is tied to His truth . Because of his emet , his anger does burn hot against sin and injustice, which is an act of graciousness. Because no act of wickedness will go unpunished, and goodness and righteousness will not go unrewarded.

But God is also slow to anger, because He is gracious. The truth isnt to shame us, but to bring us closer to Him. The beauty in all of this is that our salvation, and I would add our spiritual growth, is by faith, through grace, and not by worksIt is a gift of God, lest anyone should boast .
