What Does The Bible Say About Educating Children

What Does the Bible Say About Teaching?

Posted July 8, 2012 by nebby3 in Homeschool, Parenting, Theology.

Dear Reader,

I am not one of those who thinks every aspect of our lives should be lived based on biblical texts. We do not eat a Bible-based diet, for example. The biblical text is God-given and infallible. But it is not a guidebook for every aspect of life.

But I wrote a post a few weeks back on how I think Charlotte Masons educational philosophy is biblical. So I thought I should look more closely at what the Bible has to say about how we educate our children. There are a number of ways in which we can approach this issue. We can ask why we educate, what we teach, or how we educate. Of these, I think the last is the most controversial and probably the one on which the Bible has the least to say.

But to begin with, lets look at the why and what. Here are the principles I see in the Bible relating to education of children:

1. We must not neglect our childrens education. There are numerous verses commanding us to train and discipline our children. Proverbs 22:6 comes to mind: Train up a child in the way he should go even when he is old he will not depart from it .

2. There is a moral component to education. As the Proverbs verse above says, there is a right path to be on in ones life, and a wrong one, and we are not to let our children stumble about blindly, but are to lead them in the godly way.

And previously, the Israelites were instructed to pass along what they have seen and heard to their kids:

Powerful Bible Verses About Education Success

It is Gods will that we prosper in our education. This means that God cares about our education and success. His will for humans is to experience his goodness here and there. This is why the Bible is filled with verses that speak of learning and education. This should also include educational issues, as the Bible is sufficient for us to lead a godly life.

God attaches great importance to our education and we must do the same. He knew everything and created an elaborate legal system that governs physics, biology, and mathematics. We appreciate it by investing in a solid education. The Bible is the first guide that every Christian student should experience.

In this article, we have highlighted the powerful Bible verses about education and learning. These Bible passages will help you succeed as a student. There is also a passage in the Bible about wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. This list of passages in the Bible on Education will help you throughout the school.

Most people see education as a cure for the evils in society. Education, however, accomplishes little in its own right to fight desecration.

While most Christians approach education from different perspectives and then come to various conclusions, the Bible offers clear opinions on concerns such as who is responsible, what curricula are to be focused on, and how the educational goals are to be attained.

This might sound odd to some. However, God was pretty clear when he said He knows the thought he has towards us , thought of Good and not of evil, to give us an expected end.

    How Do We Know God

These days, it seems like history is repeating itself. A lot of Christians search to know God by shortcuts or frivolous methods that are in abundance and readily available in the Christian market. There are books and articles that offer to know God by reading books of self-help or quick devotionals. Yet the results can lead to a life of frustration and Christian failure.

What Does The Bible Say About Education

Education should found its foundation in the worship and reverence of the Lord:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge fools despise wisdom and instruction.

    Proverbs 1:7

As for the subjects to be covered, anything good, true and beautiful is fair game. Classically, students were taught according to the Trivium of subjects, namely Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric. This format is followed by classical schools today. In my own perusal of Scripture I found support for inclusion of the following subjects. The list is not certainly not exhaustive but may be instructional.

What does the Bible say about education?

Since the Bible is completely sufficient for equipping us to live a life of godliness, this must also include matters of education. We must take a high view of education, because God does. God knows all things and has created an elaborate system of laws governing physics and biology and mathematics. We glorify Him by investing in a solid education. But what does the Bible have to say about education? First of all, we can see that the Bible itself is meant to be educational.

    1. 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.

    2. Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

    3. 1 Timothy 4:13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.

The State May Provide Some Facilitation

Again, this deals with Old Covenant Israel, however it is instructive:

David and the chiefs of the service also set apart for the service the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who prophesied with lyres, with harps, and with cymbals…And they cast lots for their duties, small and great, teacher and pupil alike.

King David, as head of state, set up a worship music arts teaching program for temple worship. Note that David was not doing the teaching, nor were any of his governmental officials leading the department. Rather David set it up and entrusted it to faithful and gifted instructors, under Gods leadership.** Translated to modern times this may look like a government giving a public award or even a tax break to an arts program that seeks to instill the love of truth and beauty in its students, which would be in line with the responsibility of government to sanction good behavior.

The Apostle Pau uses in Romans the word know or knowing. What should we know? How to apply Gods Word in our education.

When we gain Biblical understanding and put it into practice, in spirit and truth we serve the Lord . Theology was named the queen of the sciences, because our understanding of God influences all other fields of education.

The bible also emphasized that Christians study to shew thyself approved unto God . The NIV simplifies this verse, Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

Its more valuable than material things.Proverbs 16:16 says that having wisdom and understanding is better than having silver or gold. Nice and expensive items can be enjoyable, but there are very few things in life that can never be taken away, will never go out of style, and that truly make you a better person. An education is one of those things.

Yes, we all go to college with the intention of getting great jobs and starting successful careers, but earning a degree offers much more than financial benefits. It enriches your mind and opens the door to new people, places, and ways of thinking. Dont focus so heavily on the monetary perks of obtaining a degree that you overlook the most significant ones.

But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Learn About The God We Serve

For this reason, at Artios Christian College, we strive to teach our students about the Bible and to learn more about the God we serve and to understand their lifes purpose. On one occasion Jesus said, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? And not to be set on a candlestick? Mark 4:21 . Because of this, one of the purposes of Christian education is to reach the greatest number of servant leaders so that His Word will be shared with responsibility and earnestness. We seek to teach excellence in our classes.

In his book Knowing God, Dr. J.I. Packer established the following paradigm: Knowing about God is crucially important for the living of our lives. He continues to say, so we are cruel to ourselves if we try to live in this world without knowing about the God whose world it is and who runs it. The world becomes a strange, mad, painful place, and life in it a disappointing and unpleasant business, for those who do not know about God . Our God is a personal and relational God because of this, God is most interested in starting and maintaining a good relationship between Him and His followers. We can only accomplish this with good personal, honest, and thoughtful study habits towards the God we follow and serve.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children Hosea 4:6 KJV.

From the beginning of time, the omnipotent and only God established the importance of education for his chosen ones. Because of this, he strongly recommended to the fathers of old to share with their children the teachings that God desired for them to receive.
