What The Bible Says About The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit Makes Believers New And Gives Them Eternal Life

What The Bible Says About The Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit works in the lives of believers to renew, sanctify, and make us holy. Just as the Holy Spirit raised Christ from the dead, the Holy Spirit will give eternal life to believers in Christ.

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you .

What Are The Gift Of The Holy Spirit

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are an enumeration of seven spiritual gifts originating from patristic authors, later elaborated by five intellectual virtues and four other groups of ethical characteristics. They are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.

Fruit And Gifts Of The Spirit

The “fruit of the Holy Spirit” consists of “permanent dispositions” , virtuous characteristics engendered in the Christian by the action of the Holy Spirit.Galatians 5:22-23 names nine aspects and states:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, self-control against such there is no law.

In the Epistle to the Galatians these nine characteristics are in contrast to the “works of the flesh” and highlight the positive manifestations of the work of the Holy Spirit in believers.

Christian denominations have doctrinal variations in their beliefs regarding the Holy Spirit. A well-known example is the Filioque controversy regarding the Holy Spirit â one of the key differences between the teachings of the main Western Churches and various Eastern Christian denominations .

The Filioque debate centers around whether the Nicene Creed should state that the Spirit “proceeds from the Father” and then have a stop, as the creed was initially adopted in Greek , or should say “from the Father and the Son” as was later adopted in Latin and followed by the Western Church, filioque being “and from the Son” in Latin.

The topic of the Holy Spirit is discussed extensively in the Catechism of the Catholic Church as “I believe in the Holy Spirit” in paragraphs 683 through 747.

The Holy Spirit teaches, gives power, and changes us to live this Christian life successfully. The enemy does not want us to understand the Holy Spirit. He wants to see us continue to try to fight Him in our strength. Lets pray and ask God to help.

John 1: 2: The Holy Ghost Testifies Of Jesus Christ

What Does the Bible Say About the Holy Spirit?

Jesus taught that when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me . Latter-day Saints believe that one of the main roles of the Holy Ghost is to testify of truth, especially of Jesus Christ and His divinity! It is only through the Holy Ghost that we can receive a testimony that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Redeemer of the World .

The Holy Spirit Is A Seal In The Lives Of Believers

In the ancient world, a seal was a legal signature attesting ownership and validating what was sealed.

The Holy Spirit is our mark of adoption as Gods children. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his followers so that they could be confident in their salvation.

Just as you might make a deposit or a down payment on a new car to make sure the salesperson doesnt sell it to anyone else, the Holy Spirit is a deposit in our lives confirming the validity of Christs message and that we belong to Christ.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are Gods possessionto the praise of his glory .

How To Be Led By The Holy Spirit

To be Spirit-led, we must repent and be baptized . Next, the Bible says God will give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him . When we truly desire to live life as a converted Christian, we must ask God to help us. When we seek Him, we find that we thirst after His righteousness, which means we genuinely desire to live a life that pleases Him.

As we diligently seek God, we have the promise of our Savior, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled . As we confess our sins, ask God to help us with our weaknesses, and submit our lives in obedience, He will fill us with His Spirit. As the Spirit reveals areas of sin, we must respond with repentance and asking God to help us. As we turn from sin and our old nature, we invite the Spirit to fill us, lead us, teach us, and strengthen us, and we believe that God will answer our prayers by faith.

The Holy Spirit Is God Himself

The Holy Spirit is an equal among and a true member of what is known as the Godhead. Thats just another way of describing the three-in-oneness of God.

The Godhead is made up of three equal persons living in perfect unity with each other. Believing this is vital to understanding the powerful role the Spirit plays in the lives of Christians and the way God is active in the world.

The Bible verses in this section show that the Holy Spirit is God. They describe Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit interacting and existing in community with one another.

  • In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters .

  • At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, He saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are My Son, whom I love with You I am well pleased .

  • God, who knows the heart, showed that He accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as He did to us .

  • May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all .

  • God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear .

What The Bible Says About The Holy Spirit

Prophecies of the Holy Ghost outpouring is found in many places in the Old Testament. However, the two most obvious references are found in Joel and Ezekiel:

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.Ezekiel 36:26-27

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.Joel 2:28-29

Interestingly enough, its this prophecy from the book of Joel that Peter referenced when he was trying to explain the first outpouring of the Holy Ghost in Acts 2.

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:Acts 2:14-17

The Holy Spirit The Helper And Spirit Of Truth

Jesus said this to His disciples not long before He was to leave them:

If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you foreverthe Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans I will come to you. John 14:15-18.

These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:25-26.

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. John 15:26.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you but if I depart, I will send Him to you. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. John 16:7, 12-14.

For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say. Luke 12:12.

Things The Bible Says About The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit, part of the Triune God Himself, lives in the hearts of each person who believes the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Billy Graham explained the relationship of the Trinity as this, The Father is the source of all blessing, and the Son is the channel of all blessing. It is through the Holy Spirit at work in us that all truth becomes living and operative in our lives.

Coming To A Reasonable Faith In Scripture

What the Bible Says About the Holy Spirit By Stanley M ...

Most people come to a reasonable trust in the Bible as God’s word something like this. It happens in three stages.

1. We Are Guilty Before God

First, the testimony of our own conscience, the reality of God behind nature, and the message of Scripture come together in our hearts to give us the inescapable conviction that we are guilty before our Creator. This is a reasonable conviction because the persuasion that there is a Creator above this world and the persuasion that we are guilty for not honoring and thanking him as we ought are not irrational leaps in the dark they are forced upon us by our experience and our honest thinking about the world.

2. Jesus Wins Our Confidence

The second step on the way to a reasonable persuasion that the Bible is God’s word is that Jesus Christ is shown to us. Someone reads or tells us the story of this incomparable man who talked and acted like so much more than a man. We see the authority he claimed to forgive sin and command demons and control nature, we see the purity of his moral teaching, his utter surrender to the will of God, his brilliant calm under cross-examination, his righteous fury against hypocrites, his tenderness toward little children, his patience with the humble seekers, his innocent submission to torture, and we hear from his lips the sweetest, most-needed words ever spoken: “I have come to give my life as a ransom for many.”

Misconceptions About The Holy Spirit

Misconception: The Holy Ghost, or holy spirit, is a person and is part of the Trinity, as stated at 1 John 5:7, 8 in the King James version of the Bible.

Fact: The King James version of the Bible includes at 1 John 5:7, 8 the words in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth. However, researchers have found that those words were not written by the apostle John and so do not belong in the Bible. Professor Bruce M. Metzger wrote: That these words are spurious and have no right to stand in the New Testament is certain.A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament.

Misconception: The Bible personifies the holy spirit, and this proves that it is a person.

Fact: The Scriptures do at times personify the holy spirit, but this does not prove that the holy spirit is a person. The Bible also personifies wisdom, death, and sin. For example, wisdom is said to have works and children, and sin is depicted as seducing, killing, and working out covetousness.Matthew 11:19 Luke 7:35 Romans 7:8, 11.

Misconception: Baptism in the name of the holy spirit proves that it is a person.

Misconception: Jesus apostles and other early disciples believed that the holy spirit was a person.
