Giving Up Sugar Tasting Gods Goodness

As a latchkey kid, Wendy Speake turned to sugar for comfort. Every Friday, she would pedal to the candy show and use her allowance to fill her bag with candy. And one day, when she was older and a mom of three young boys, she came to realize that she was still pedaling away from her stress and using sugar as comfort, instead of turning to Jesus. She was joyless, worn out, tired, and in need of a change. In this interview, Wendy will challenge Christians to take 40 days to focus on fasting from something they turn to instead of Jesus for comfort. She invited people to break free from a dependence on sugar and taste the goodness of God.

Where Does The Bible Say That Homosexuality Is A Sin

The Bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. There are many passages we have not included below. But here are a few of the more relevant ones from each testament:

Leviticus 18:22 – You shall not lie with a male as with a woman it is an abomination.

Leviticus 20:13 – If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination they shall surely be put to death their blood is upon them.

Romans 1:2627 – For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

1 Corinthians 6:911 – Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Is It True That Sodom And Gomorrah Were Destroyed Because Of Inhospitality Not Homosexuality

It is actually both. The story in Genesis mentions that the men in Sodom were wicked and great sinners against the Lord which is shown in the story by their desire to have sex with men , and because of their inhospitality to the strangers. However, Jude 7 explicitly mentions their sexual sin as one of the reasons they were destroyed.

On Sodom And Gomorrah

The Bible does not condemn âhomosexuality.â? Seriously, it doesnât.

This story, in Genesis 19, tells of the attempted gang rape of two angels, sent by God to see if any good people remained in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah after their inhabitants had revoked the important law of the welcoming of strangers and of Gods subsequent destruction of the cities. But the point about this story is that its about punishment for inhospitality, a grave misdemeanour in Jewish society. Nothing about judgement over sexual orientation.

How Should Christians Respond To Homosexuals

Im writing today with several personal friends especially in mind: a mother of a gay son, a brother of a gay sister, a son whose father is divorcing his wife and announcing his homosexuality, and a close college friend who several years ago declared his homosexuality and is no longer in vocational Christian ministry.

What would I say to these four people if they were reading this essay?

Two comments are easy to make, the other two not as much so.

Is There An Objective Way To Respond To These Assertions

First, lets consider the claim that this Old Testament law has no relevance for New Testament believers but should be classified with kosher laws and such.

A basic rule of biblical interpretation is that any Old Testament teaching repeated in the New Testament carries the weight of command to the Christian church and faith. And the prohibition against homosexual activity is most certainly present there .

Even those Old Testament statements that are not repeated in the New Testament carry the force of principle. For instance, kosher laws tell us, at the least, that God cares about our bodies and health.

Second, it is claimed that the Leviticus passage expresses a worship code, not a moral standard.

The logic is that Leviticus is written with regard to the Levitical priests and their duties of worship preparation and leadership and does not apply as such to the larger family of faith. However, the chapter in question begins, The Lord said to Moses, Speak to the Israelites and say to them . . . . .

Nothing in the chapter limits its application or significance to the Levites. Rather, the chapter exhorts all Israel to keep my decrees and laws, for the man who obeys them will live by them . It proceeds to forbid incestuous relationships, child sacrifice, and bestialitystandards I presume critics of Leviticus 18:22 would consider universal.

How Can God Condemn Homosexuality If People Are Born That Way

What the Bible says about homosexuality | Kristin Saylor & Jim O’Hanlon | TEDxEdgemontSchool

The Question/Argument: How can God condemn homosexuality if people dont have a choice and are just born that way? If he is fair and just like the Bible says, he cannot condemn gay or lesbian people because they have no choice. God cannot be good because he condemns people that have no choice.

Well this is an extremely sensitive topic so there are a few things I need to clarify right away and a few things that need to be established when addressing this issue.

First off, is that Im notjudging or condemning anyone, homosexuals included. Nor do I hate or dislike gay people, people of other religions, prostitutes, people who vote for certain political parties, politicians, lawyers, criminals, police, people of different ethnicity, etc, etc. The list goes on.

It seems that whenever anyone has a different view of someone elses religion or life choices people cry homophobic! or racist! or bigot! immediately without even knowing what the person is actually saying. Oddly enough this doesnt appear to apply to Christianity, as I see Christianity attacked frequently without anyone bringing up any kind of accusation of intolerance or close-mindedness to those slandering Christianity without any real knowledge of what Christianity actually is But thats getting off topic, my point is that I dont hate homosexuals nor any other people of any religion or race or creed or lifestyle, etc.

Four Things You Didnt Know About God And Same

Christians who oppose same-sex marriage say it goes against the biblical conception of marriage and sexuality, but they’re wrong.

Last week, Iowa and Vermont joined Connecticut and Massachusetts to legalize same-sex marriage. Progressive religious voices and civil rights groups worked hard to help achieve these victories, moving us closer to our nations promise of equality and justice for all. Even so, conservative religious opponents are criticizing the victories, claiming that same-sex marriage violates the biblical definition of marriage. They are wrong, and heres why.

1. There are few biblical verses that address homosexuality at all, and most of those are not directed at homosexuality per se. Opponents of same-sex marriage routinely cite seven verses in the Christian Bible as condemning homosexuality and calling it a sin. But when taken in context, these lessons speak not against homosexuality itself, but rather against rape, child molestation, bestiality, and other practices that hurt others and compromise a persons relationship with God.

2. Jesus never said one word against homosexuality. In all of his teachings, Jesus uplifted actions and attitudes of justice, love, humility, mercy, and compassion. He condemned violence, oppression, cold-heartedness, and social injustice. Never once did Jesus refer to what we call homosexuality as a sin.

Is It True That Jesus Never Condemned Homosexuality

This question assumes three ideas that are unbiblical. First, it assumes that the teachings of Jesus are in conflict the rest of the Bible. Remember: when Paul speaks, Jesus speaks, because the Bible is inspired by the same Holy Spirit. When Romans condemns homosexuality, that is the same as God himself condemning homosexuality. Second, Jesus never says that you shouldnt poison a federal judge. Does that mean that it is okay to poison a federal judge? No. Thats not how Scripture works. One has to take the Bible as a whole to know what God says. Third, this claim is just not true. Jesus explicitly condemns sexual immorality which is a term that, as we know from other Greek and Jewish writings in the first century, includes homosexuality. So Jesus does condemn homosexuality he just uses a different word to do it.

Passages Traditionally Considered To Condemn Homosexual Relationships

The Old Testament

Genesis 19, Judges 19

These well-known stories recount incidents in which the male citizenry of a town proposes to have intercourse with a male visitor .

D.S. Baileys attempt to interpret the verb know in Genesis 19:5 as meaning something other than sexual knowledge9 is untenable in light of verse 7, in which Lots daughters are offered as an alternative to the men.10 Homosexual relations are clearly in view here and they are almost certainly construed negatively. The type of homosexual union negatively construed, however, is far from what is typical today , and the broader context which concerns a breach of Eastern hospitality is at least partly involved in the negative construal.11

As an important corrective to those who might judge the sin of Sodom to be homosexual relations alone, Bailey and others rightly point out that the Bible on the whole interprets the sin of Sodom very broadly to include things other than homosexual intercourse, such as pride and insensitivity to the poor . This does not mean, however, that the sexual dimension is ignored in the biblical witness important here is Jude 7, which refers to Sodoms indulgence in unnatural lusts, and 2 Peter 2:6 which mentions Lots oppression by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men.13 Of course, only at a later period does Sodom become a byword specifically for homosexual relations.

The Creation Order In Genesis

So You Think Homosexuality Is A Sin?

The early chapters of Genesis provide a clear example of what marriage looks like as God designed it. After creating Adam, God declares, It is not good that man should be alone I will make him a helper comparable to him . And so He puts Adam in a deep sleep, and forms Eve from his side.

Adams immediate response to meeting Eve, his suitable helper, is to declare that she is his counterpart, made from him, and to name her: This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man . The chapter closes with a beautiful illustration of marriage:

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

David And Jonathan Ruth And Naomi

The account of David and Jonathan in the Books of Samuel has been interpreted by traditional and mainstream writers as a relationship of affectionate regard. It has also been interpreted by some authors as of a sexual nature. Theologian Theodore Jennings identifies the story as one of desire for David by both Saul and Jonathan, stating, “Saul’s jealousy has driven into Jonathan’s arms.”Michael Coogan addresses the claim of the alleged homosexual relationship between David and Jonathan and explicitly rejects it.

The story of Ruth and Naomi is also occasionally interpreted by contemporary scholars as the story of a lesbian couple. Coogan states that the Hebrew Bible does not even mention lesbianism.

Why We Dont Condemn Mortgages

Before the reformation, about 500 years ago, the church pretty universally thought that moneylending was wrong, and always wrong. And they thought the Bible said that it was always wrong.

Money-lending, usury, was a mortal sin. You couldnt get a Christian burial if you lent money for profit. And this carried on into the reformation. Martin Luther denounced lending money for profit. He saw it as wicked.

But in the reformation, lots of people began to question this. Lots of reasons for this, to do with economic change. Anyway, a friend of Calvins wrote to him, asking him if lending money for interest could ever be OK.

And Calvin wrote back saying yes, in certain circumstances, it might be. This was incendiary stuff the letter itself remained private until a decade after Calvins death.

But how did Calvin reach this conclusion?

His answer covered a range of areas these include the authority of the Bible compared with interpretations of the Bible the need to understand what the writings meant in their original context and to their original audience that you need to look behind prohibitions to see what the purpose of them is and also how does all this fit in with justice and love.

What Does The Bible Teach About Same

The Bible defines marriage in Genesis 2:24 as a union between one man and one woman. Jesus Christ upholds this definition of marriage in Matthew 19:5, as does the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:31. Any and all sexual activity which takes place outside of this context is treated as sinful, what Jesus calls sexual immorality in Mark 7:21.

Further to this, same-sex practice is specifically highlighted as sinful a number of times in Scripture. In Gods Law, for example, condemnations of same-sex practice are given in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13. Further references are made in the New Testament. For example, in Romans 1:24-32, amid echoes to the Genesis creation account, both male and female same-sex practice are treated as sinful. Further references to the sinfulness of same-sex practice can be seen in 1 Corinthians 6:9 and 1 Timothy 1:10.

The Scriptures are, therefore, consistent in their prohibition of same-sex sexual activity, across different periods of salvation history and within different cultural settings. Although the Scriptures are clear on sexual ethics, they also tell us that the prospect of forgiveness and eternal life is held out for anyone who turns from sin and puts their faith in Christ , no matter how they may have fallen short of his good design for sex and marriage.

Is It Unhealthy Or Unloving To Ask Someone To Suppress Their Sexual Urges

What does the Bible Say About Astrology and Crystals?

First, we ask people to do that all the time. It is unhealthy not to suppress your sexual urges. If someone has a desire for incest or rape, we all agree that those urges should definitely not be acted on. Additionally, the Bible is not asking people to suppress their sexual urges . It is asking them to confess their urges. It is asking them to take desires they have and give them over to Jesus so they dont have to carry them anymore.

A Homosexual Person Deserves To Be Treated With Dignity And Respect

He or she is acting out a lifestyle that many of us understand to be unbiblicalbut so are any of us who practice slander, gossip, heterosexual lust, or egotistical pride.

So-called gay bashing is always wrong. Any action or attitude that demeans a person or makes them less valuable is the opposite of the grace and unconditional love of Christ.

What About The Argument That Homosexuality Is Inherited

If this is true, at least for some, how can such activity be wrong?

God made me this way is a typical testimony. A very brief response would be that the connection between genetics and homosexuality is tenuous at best.

Where research has seemed to indicate some physical propensity toward homosexual orientation, others in the field have refuted such a conclusion. It is widely believed that alcoholism can be an inherited genetic propensity, but no one would therefore endorse its practice. While this is a very unfortunate analogy regarding homosexuals, it perhaps illustrates the fact that not every genetic tendency should be endorsed .
