Sex Isnt Dirty Or Shameful

We cant have a conversation about sex and leave out shame. I would dare to say that sex and shame are commingled in the minds of each and every one of us.

Shame is defined by as a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior.

Sex can trigger shame for many reasons it could be because of what weve done or because of what has been done to us. No matter the reason though, shame no longer allows us to see sex as it was created to be because of all the baggage it carries with it.

So what can we do? I think it would be helpful to adjust our thinking from the default of shame which is sex is dirty to sex is pure, but for me its been stained by sin. When we can see it in that light, then we can begin to let God heal and forgive and restore.

God intended sex to be pure and the stunning reality is that he can restore it to purity for each and every one of us. We can be assured of this, Gods forgiveness leaves no blemish uncleansed.

Oh what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared from sin .

Sex doesnt have to be confusing, unenjoyable or shame-filled. God intended for it to be beautiful, unifying and honorable. We can experience that kind of physical intimacy if we filter our thoughts and actions through Gods Word. Where is God asking you to align your mind and heart with his truth today?

Sex Is For Marriage And Marriage Is For Sex

God wants us to save sex for marriage not because its bad or dirty but because its unique, exclusive, and wonderful. Sex isnt just casual fun. And its not just a feel-good way of expressing mutual love. Its about two people becoming one flesh.

  • Jesus says, Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? .
  • This fits with the apostle Pauls warning in 1 Corinthians 6:16: Do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, The two will become one flesh .
  • The same concept underlies the commandment against adultery . In the biblical view, adultery includes any sexual activity outside of marriage. This is why the Bible says, Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous .

Sex is a holy mystery. Its a powerful bonding agent that shapes and affects the relationship between a man and a woman as nothing else can.

Thats why the Bible often compares idolatry to the sin of fornication or adultery .

And its why the Bible uses sexual purity and faithfulness between spouses as an image of our relationship with God .

So, what about Isaac and Rebekah, or Joseph and Mary?

    What Does This Mean

The Bible promotes complete abstinence before marriage. Sex between a husband and his wife is the only form of sexual relations of which God approves. Christians can mess up and receive Gods full forgiveness. But there is a stark difference between messing up and continuing to do so with the mindset, I can always ask for forgiveness.

What matters is a fully repentant heart. Repentance isnt just an attitude of the heart it literally means to turn from the former life with a commitment to change for the better. We, as followers of Christ, must strive to live within the confines of his loving boundaries and celebrate the good gifts hes given us even if that means we have to wait until our wedding day.

What Does The Bible Say About Pornography

The battle against pornography and sexual purity has raged for generations, and it has become more sophisticated and widespread as the years have passed. But Gods message to us remains the same.

She didnt find out about the porn problem through a confession. She found it on his phone. My sister had been putting away laundry when she took her husbands phone out of his jeans. She happened to swipe the screen when suddenly a video popped open to play. In utter shock, Jade scrolled through his phone only to find dozens of videos, photos, and other pornographic websites.

I then called a close family friend. I think you need to talk to Will about his marriage. His wife just found porn on his phone and shes thinking about leaving him. This family friend scoffed and said, Why? Its not that big of a deal. Men werent meant to be monogamous and the fact shes airing their dirty laundry to you is pretty pathetic. He went on further as to why porn isnt a big deal.

Do you see what just happened there? A family unit was nearly destroyed because of pornography and yet most Americans dont think that porn is a big deal. But it is. According to 15 Mind Blowing Facts about Pornography and Church, here are some alarming statistics:

    2. 2.47% of families in the United States reported pornography in their home.

    Bible Verses About Sexual Immorality

Acts 15:29“You must abstain from eating food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality. If you do this, you will do well. Farewell.”

1 Corinthians 5:15It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. For though absent in body, I am present in spirit and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 5:911I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people — not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler — not even to eat with such a one.

1 Corinthians 10:8We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.

What Does The Bible Say About Human Sexuality

What Does the Bible Say About Human Sexuality?

Our gender and natural sexual desires are part of our God-given physical existence. As with all Gods gifts, he has designed them for a purpose. Human sexuality is created by God for his glory, the joy of his creatures and the propagation of the race.

Moreover, for the Christian, the body is sacred, made holy by the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit and therefore to be used in a manner that glorifies God.

How Has God Provided for Sexual Gratification?

The marital union of one man to one woman is ordained by God as the only moral expression of human sexual relationship. The concept of marriage is never used in the Bible to describe a union of any kind between people of the same gender. Thus, from a biblical standpoint, no other union may be considered marriage regardless of court rulings or state and federal laws.

Is Living Together Before Marriage Acceptable?

Men or women who are sexually active outside marriage, living together or not, are practicing a biblically immoral lifestyle dishonoring to God and destructive to their spiritual health and future marital life. Because of these Biblical imperatives our expectation is for unmarried couples to live apart and be sexually abstinent until marriage.

    What About Same-Sex Relationships?

    Gods Boundaries are Good

    Its Still Your Choice

So is sex before marriage forbidden in the Bible?

    No, it isnt.

Is sex before marriage recommended in the Bible?

    Not at all.

The Bible simply presents some of the issues and consequences involved in sex without the intent to marry vs. sex within marriage or with the intent to marry.

    Its still your choice.

Thats as it should be. These are very personal issues, and very personal choices. No one else can make them for you.

However, before you decide to go all-in physically, do consider what you want from the relationship.

If you simply want to enjoy sexual intimacy with someone you feel close to, that is quite doable. But that may be all youll get out of the relationship. If youre good with that, then you can at least go in with your eyes open.

However, if what you really want is a long-term, committed, faithful marriage, consider the possibility that starting out with sexual intimacy early in the relationship may make the kind of marriage you long for less likely rather than more likely.

If you spend the time to find and create an inner connection with your partner before fully engaging your physical drives and hormones, youre more likely to start the relationship on a solid and lasting foundation of inner oneness. That inner oneness is at the heart of every true and lasting marriage.

What Does The Bible Say About Oral Sex

There are two veiled passages in the Bible that many theologians believe pertain to oral sex. The first is Song of Solomon 2:3: Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the young men. In his shade I took great delight and sat down, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. The word fruit refers to the male genitals and in biblical references. It is sometimes equated with the male genitals or with semen so, it is possible that this passage is a reference to an oral genital caress.

The second possible veiled reference is found in Song of Solomon 4:16: Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits. These erotic words spoken by Solomons bride are at the climax of a very sensuous love scene. It seems Shulamith asks her husband to blow on her garden and cause its spices to flow out. Of course, one cannot be certain, but it is possible Shulamith is inviting her husband to excite her by caressing her with his mouth. She then invites him to enter her and feast on the pleasures waiting in her garden.

God Wants Us To Reserve Sex For Marriage

    Christian Sex

God wants us to reserve sex for marriage, not because its bad or dirty, but precisely because its such a unique, exclusive and wond4erful thing. Sex is a holy mystery. Its a powerful bonding agent that shapes and affects the relationship between a man and s woman as nothing else can. To take it outside of marriage is like taking the wine consecrated at Holy Communion and using it for a frat house party. This is why writers of Scripture so often compare idolatry to the sin of fornication or adultery. It also explains why they use sexual purity and faithfulness between spouses as an image of our relationship with God .

    He Is Altogether Lovely

In an amazingly similar way, in the book Song of Songs, the Beloved describes her Lover in intimate, bold, and admiring language . She talks about his head, hair, eyes, cheeks, lips, arms, and legs. She calls him handsome, radiant, ruddy, and outstanding. She compliments his arms of gold and his body of polished ivory. She talks about the kisses of his mouth. She delights to be with him and talks in detail about his affection and care for her. She shares a very revealing phrase at the end of the book. “I have become in his eyes like one bringing contentment” . How does he come to view her in that way?

Hopefully, at this point in your reading of this book, you have already been at work as a couple on your verbal and relational intimacy. Hopefully as well you have had some victories in working through conflict. It is important as well that you have gotten help with any long term injuries. There may be some rather difficult things that have happened between you that make imitating the way the Beloved talks about her Lover seem impossible. It is incredibly important, however, that as you are working at improving and repairing your intimate relationship, you examine the heart of God and his heart for you and have the same heart for your husband.

Bu Theologian: The Good Book Is Not A Rule Book

It is easy to label Jennifer Knust, the author of Unprotected Texts: The Bibles Surprising Contradictions About Sex and Desire, a theological renegade. And she does say the sorts of things in this bookabout premarital sex and abortion and gay marriagethat make conservatives shudder. But in one respect at least, Knust, a School of Theology assistant professor, is a throwback.

Long ago and in a place far away, Christians used to actually fear God. They saw a yawning gap between their limited intelligence and the mind of God. So they were exceedingly careful about presuming what God had to say about almost anything. He who would learn astronomy, and other recondite arts, wrote the Protestant reformer John Calvin, he should go elsewhere than the Biblical text.

Today many supposedly conservative Christians have no trouble pontificating on what Jesus would do about the deficit or what the Bible says about war and peace or sex and the solar system. Knust, who is an ordained American Baptist pastor, thinks that this confidence is not only preposterous, but perhaps idolatrous as well.

We sat down a few days ago, as people increasingly sit down nowadays , to discuss her new book.

None of this would have been possible if Ruth had not set out to seduce Boaz in a field, without the benefit of marriage.

    The Communal Aspect Of Marriage

Different cultures have different ways of arranging marriage and marking the marital bond. Not surprisingly, then, the Bible doesnt require all marriages to be sealed in a church ceremony or with a state-authorized license.

Still, whatever the time and place, biblical marriage always includes a distinctly communal aspect. Its first understood in a couples decision to leave their parents and cleave to one another. With that step, they start a new family unit as a part of general human society.

In other words, marriage involves a couples public commitment to build a strong and lasting relationship. That relationship isnt only a foundation for the nurturing of their own children its also a building block of social stability and a contribution to the well-being of the broader community.

In Bible times, that communal part of marriage was overseen almost exclusively by the family. However, in 21st-century America, it also involves the state and for serious believers, the Church.

What about Mary and Joseph? Well, betrothals in ancient Judaism werent like modern engagements. A betrothal did require that the couple not have sex until after the wedding ceremony. But aside from this, the relationship a betrothal established was every bit as binding and permanent as what we normally think of as marriage.
