Is The Bible All True

The Inspiration And Inerrancy Of The Bible

Is the Bible All True?

We believe that the Bible is God’s word. The doctrinal statement of Moody Bible Institute affirms, “The Bible, including both the Old and New Testaments, is a divine revelation, the original autographs of which were verbally inspired by the Holy Spirit.”1

Revelation is God’s self-disclosure. It is God making Himself known to men.2 God has revealed himself in a limited way in creation.3 But the Bible is a form of special revelation. The Bible is “special” revelation in the sense that it goes beyond what may be known about God through nature.4 It is divine in origin, since in the Bible God makes known things which otherwise could never be known.

The Bible is unique because it is God’s revelation recorded in human language.5 According to 2 Timothy 3:16-17 the words of Scripture are “God breathed” or inspired. This implies that God is the source or origin of what is recorded in Scripture. God, through the Holy Spirit, used human authors to write what He revealed in the Bible. They were not mere copyists or transcribers. The Holy Spirit guided and controlled the writers of Scripture, who used their own vocabularies and styles but wrote only what the Holy Spirit intended.6 This is true only of the original manuscripts, not the copies or translations. Although the original manuscripts have been lost to us, God has preserved the biblical text to a remarkable degree.

Archaeological Evidence Of Jesus Does Not Exist

There is no definitive physical or archaeological evidence of the existence of Jesus. Theres nothing conclusive, nor would I expect there to be, Mykytiuk says. Peasants dont normally leave an archaeological trail.

The reality is that we dont have archaeological records for virtually anyone who lived in Jesuss time and place, says University of North Carolina religious studies professor Bart D. Ehrman, author of Did Jesus Exist? The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth. The lack of evidence does not mean a person at the time didnt exist. It means that she or he, like 99.99% of the rest of the world at the time, made no impact on the archaeological record.

Questions of authenticity continue to surround direct relics associated with Jesus, such as the crown of thorns he reputedly wore during his crucifixion , and the Shroud of Turin, a linen burial cloth purportedly emblazoned with the image of his face.

The holy crown of thorns at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Archaeologists, though, have been able to corroborate elements of the New Testament story of Jesus. While some disputed the existence of ancient Nazareth, his biblical childhood home town, archaeologists have unearthed a rock-hewn courtyard house along with tombs and a cistern. They have also found physical evidence of Roman crucifixions such as that of Jesus described in the New Testament.

Nile Turning To Blood

The longest river in the world could have been filled not with freshwater but with blood, at least according to one passage in the Bible.

After Egypt’s pharaoh refuses to grant the Israelites freedom, God tells Moses and Aaron to use their staffs to turn the Nile river to blood. “Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded. In the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants he lifted up the staff and struck the water in the Nile, and all the water in the Nile turned into blood. And the fish in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. There was blood throughout all the land of Egypt,” Exodus 7:20-21.

The pharaoh simply shrugs off what happened. “Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not take even this to heart. And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink the water of the Nile,” Exodus 7:23-24.

The Most Bizarre Stories From The Bible

Welcome to Frank

ByOwen Jarus02 June 2021

From a talking donkey to a man being eaten by a giant fish, the Bible has no shortage of strange stories. In her new book “A Most Peculiar Book: The Inherent Strangeness of the Bible” , Kristin Swenson, an associate professor of religious studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, delves into these stories and many others. Here’s a look at 20 of the more bizarre biblical stories that Swenson discusses in the book. Some, such as Jonah being eaten by a giant fish, refer to important archaeological sites, like Nineveh, an ancient Assyrian city in modern-day northern Iraq. Others, such as that of a literal scapegoat, explain how phrases that are commonly used in modern times came into existence.

God Tries To Kill Moses

The Book of Exodus also contains a baffling turn of events: At one point, God gives Moses instructions on what he must do to help free the Israelites from Egypt’s pharaoh. God gave Moses special capabilities, such as the ability to turn his staff into a snake. However, as Moses heads toward Egypt, God gets another idea.

“At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses and was about to kill him. But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it. ‘Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me,’ she said. So the Lord let him alone,” Exodus 4:24-26.

Scholars have been baffled about why God initially planned to kill Moses, Swenson said. One possibility is that some passages from this biblical story that may have shed light on that question were lost.

Evidences That Show The Bible Is True

Earlier this year, we opened our newest Ark Encounter exhibit, Why the Bible Is True, to the public. In this gospel-presenting exhibit, you will follow three college students around their college campus as they are challenged about their beliefs. Why the Bible Is True addresses many common objections to trusting Gods Word. Below are five evidences from the exhibit that, when taken together, demonstrate the truthfulness of the Bible.

Additional Roman Texts Reference Jesus

Shortly before Tacitus penned his account of Jesus, Roman governor Pliny the Younger wrote to Emperor Trajan that early Christians would sing hymns to Christ as to a god. Some scholars also believe Roman historian Suetonius references Jesus in noting that Emperor Claudius had expelled Jews from Rome who were making constant disturbances at the instigation of Chrestus.

Ehrman says this collection of snippets from non-Christian sources may not impart much information about the life of Jesus, but it is useful for realizing that Jesus was known by historians who had reason to look into the matter. No one thought he was made up.

Is Every Statement Of The Bible True

The Bible is All True…Except That…and That…and That…

Is the Bible the Authoritative Word of God Question 12

When we read the Bible, should we regard every statement as true? Can we confidently read any portion of Scripture and act upon any statement or promise that we find? The answer is no. A distinction needs to be made between the accuracy of the statements in the Bible, and their truthfulness.

The following points need to be made:

E = Elimination Of Alternatives

WhWt are the Alternatives to God insparation? The writers could be writting of their own thoughts and ideas, or it could be inspired by Satan. We know that the writters where not writting thier own thoughts because they pointed out thier own sin, thier own unholiness, and their own shortfalls as they shared what God asks of us. If a man in his own right was going to write something to change the mind of the masses it is human nature that it would be for his own benifit or to make him look better, not to better others while also showing the weakness in himself.

These men were not inspired by Satan because they combated agains evil and condemned Satan. They even predicted Satans future failure and punishment. Without the inspiration of God, the writers could not have acurately forseen and predicted the fulfillment of prophecy. There are many Alternative thoughts about how the writers came up with what they put in the bible. But, when we logically examine scripture, looking at the lives of the authors and how the message of all the authors was the same, these alternative possibilities can be eliminated. This leads us to the conclusion that God inspired these men to write and record what they did.

E = Excellence In Scripture

Excellence in Scripture is referring to the teachings found in the Bible. The bible is a book that Children can read and understand, while at the same time theologians cannot fully unpack its truth. We can read it many times from cover to cover, and each time we read it find something new. God uses his word to continually speak to his people. If we really think about it, many of the laws we have today are based off of the Laws that God gave Moses like do not steal, dont murder, etc. On top of that the Bible is so excellently written that even university scholars have recognized it because of its example of what good literature should have in it. Because of its excellence, it is the most high-caliber book ever produced, which leads us to believe that its ideas and theories are from God.

Its Descriptions Of Nature And Natural History Are Hopelessly At Odds With Science

The Bible is not at odds with science in its descriptions of nature and natural history. Biblical truth and scientific truth will never conflict as a matter of principle because, as past theologians have told us, God has given us two books to reveal who he is, namely the book of nature and the Bible. While these two books will never truly come into conflict, our interpretations of one or the other, or both, may be wrong, which brings the appearance of conflict. At this point, we need to remember the wise words of Pope John Paul II, Science can purify our religion religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.

Genesis 1-2, the main biblical account of cosmic and human origins, describes these events using figurative language, which should be obvious to all readers and has been obvious to most through the ages. Church fathers like Origen and Augustine recognized that real days with evenings and mornings must have a sun, moon, and stars. Thus the days of Genesis 1where the sun doesnt appear until the fourth daymust not be real days. When Genesis 2:7 describes the formation of the first man as God blowing on dust, that too is figurative language. After all, does God have lungs?

Summary Question 12 Is Every Statement Of The Bible True

Pin on Bible Verses File

Although every statement and event recorded in Scripture actually happened, not every statement recorded is a true statement. Each statement of the Bible needs to be read in context. We need to know who is speaking to see whether the statement, though recorded accurately, is in harmony with the truth of God. The Bible records misguided statements as well as lies.

While there may not be Christian doctrine in every statement of Scripture, all things recorded in the Bible can be read with profit.

The Bible Today: Miraculous Of Not

Today the Bible is controversial for several reasons. For example, it is filled with miracles.

In the Old Testament, God parts the Red Sea, allowing His people to escape a hoard of angry Egyptians. In the book of Joshua, the sun is said to have stood still, while Jonah records a prophet swallowed by a large fish. In the New Testament the blind receive sight, Jesus walks on water and is resurrected after being executed on a cross.

In a largely naturalistic age, meaning belief only in the material world, miracles are often doubted. The supernatural anything beyond the natural world is dismissed or relegated to a second-class status. This often results in doubt about the Bible. Can we trust it to be true? Are we really expected to believe the supernatural events it records? This is a bias that defines miracles out of existence rather than reasoning that if God exists, then miracles are possible.

It Was Written By Ancient And Primitive People And Has No Value To Modern People Anymore

The Bible was written by ancient people, to be sure. The earliest writings come from the second half of the second millennium BC and the most recent parts from around 300 BC. Thats a long time ago. The New Testament is more recent, but even those books were written almost 2000 years ago. They were written in ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek by people who were culturally different from us. Indeed, we often misunderstand the message of the Bible if we dont remember our temporal and cultural distance from those who wrote it. But its one thing to say the Bible was written by ancient people and another thing to say that they were written by primitive people. Even without taking into account the claim that these authors speak on behalf of God, such a charge would be the height of our own cultural arrogance. Yes, ancient people did not have computers, cell phones, video games, or even electricity or cars, neither did Shakespeare or Plato, and would we also say that these writers are too ancient to say anything true or meaningful? We have made remarkable advances in our understanding of natural world since biblical times, and the biblical authors often reflect their ancient worldview . But the Bible does not intend to teach us about cosmology, and the faulty cosmology that it assumes does not affect its intended message.

Is The Bible True 3 Things You Need To Know

Is the Bible true literally true? At a talk I once attended by theologian Tim Hull, he made it simple. He said the Bible is like your town library. If you were to stand in the middle of your town library and say: is this library true? .. well suddenly the question sounds unclear, even pointless.

Of course the Bible is also a library, a collection of 66 individual books, written over many centuries and situations. We trust its author but sometimes question its contents. Some questions I have come across recently include:

  • If Adam and Eve were the first family who did their children marry?
  • Why do the Gospel accounts of Christs resurrection differ?
  • Should women be silent in church?
  • Are the numbers and time-periods in Revelation literally true?

Three facts will help us appreciate the splendid truths of the Bible:

1st There are different kinds of truth

Lets return to the library idea. In one corner of the library you may have books of history and yes they are true in that the kings and reigns they describe happened. But on another shelf there are books of poetry Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the young women . That is a kind of truth but different, poems are not literally true. Similarly in another room there may be books of Proverbs wisdom that helps us to navigate our world . Even a fool is thought wise if he remains silent, discerning if he holds his tongue! is a favourite of mine. Another kind of truth.

Hell Is A Garbage Pit

God’s Story: The Bible

The bible doesn’t shy away from the abode for the eternally damned.

Jesus warns people of the dangers of going to hell if they sin. He says, for example, “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell,” Matthew 5:29.

In her book, Swenson noted that the word “hell” is a translation of the Greek word “gehenna,” which is an actual place that one could see in ancient Jerusalem. “Gehenna was where Jerusalem burned its garbage, and since the city and the surrounding communities generated a lot of garbage, gehenna was always burning,” Swenson wrote. “When Jesus warned that a person might end up in gehenna, he probably didn’t mean the literal, incinerating gehenna-dump outside of Jerusalem.”
