Enslavement In Egypt And Bareness
Although the wife-sister stories are difficult to understand, the fact that Sarah becomes a slave in Pharaohs house serves to foreshadow Israels later bondage in Egypt. She herself is not in danger of her lifebut the reader knows that nascent Israel is in danger of losing its ancestress. And so God acts to protect Sarah by afflicting Pharaoh and his house with great plagues until he realizes the problem and sends Sarah away. Protection and plague foreshadow Israels later redemption at the exodus.
Sarahs barrenness also endangers the promise and prompts her to give her handmaiden Hagar to Abraham as a surrogate womb , a custom known also from Mesopotamia. The plan goes awry when the pregnant Hagar no longer acknowledges Sarahs superiority. Sarah feels displaced and turns her anger on Abraham, declaring, May the wrong done to me be on you! and May the Lord judge between you and me! . Her own experience of servitude in Egypt perhaps has made her feel threatened by the Egyptian Hagar rather than sympathetic to her. Her status as first wife is not invulnerable: she has been given away before, in the wife-sister ruse, and she may now be vulnerable to Hagar, who conceives and will bear Abrahams heir. Abraham then restores the authority over Hagar to Sarah. However, Hagars child Ishmael is never considered part of Sarahs domain Abraham has all the authority in the family, and he, rather than Sarah, names Ishmael .
Abraham Believed The Promise
As he is about to sacrifice Isaac, God commands him to stop, and acknowledges his obedience. Abraham then sees a ram, and offers it as a sacrifice in place of Isaac. What is very important to take from this story is that Abrahams faith was not without reason. It was not a blind faith, but rather faith based upon understanding. He believed in Gods promise, and because of this, he was able to act accordingly. We must also ask ourselves, is my faith based on understanding of Gods promises? Or other things such as feelings and emotions? I hope that his story can be a great example for all of us to grow in faith.
Our Works Reveal The Genuineness Of Our Faith
James says that we may not be saved if claim to be Christians, but do not live it out, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves . Ephesians 2:10, right after saying that grace is a gift that one cannot get by works, tells us that, we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. We are not saved by good works, but we are saved to do good works.
Abraham is presented as an example of how our faith should result in our doing good things . An inward faith that does not result in an outward change of behavior may not be a genuine faith at all, So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. The life of Abraham included both faith in God and works motivated by that faith. Our Christian walk should have both those elements also.

When Abram Leaves Haran
In Jewish tradition, when Terah died at age 205, Abraham was already 135 years old. Abram thus left Haran at age 75, well before Terah died. The Torah, however, relates Terah’s death in Haran before Abram continues the journey to Canaan as an expression that he was not remiss in the Mitzvah of honoring a parent by leaving his aging father behind. The significance of Terah not reaching Canaan was a reflection of his character, a man who was unable to go “all the way”. Although on a journey in the right direction, Terah fell short at arriving to the divine destinationin contrast to Abram, who did follow through and achieved the divine goal, and was not bound by his father’s idolatrous past. Abram’s following God’s command to leave his father, thus absolved him from the mitzvah of honoring parents, and as Abraham, he would go on to create a new lineage distinct from his ancestors.
Abrahams Lies About Sarah Being His Sister Werent Exactly Lies
Every marriage is full of mistakes as two people become one, but Abraham made some big mistakesand didnt seem to learn from them! While traveling, Abraham told two different kings that his wife, Sarah, was actually his sister so that he would not be harmed. Fortunately, both kings discovered the truth and returned Sarah to her husband.
But was Abraham actually lying? In Genesis 20:12, after being found out, Abram explained to King Abimelek that Sarah was the daughter of his father, but not of his mother. Is this problematic? Not necessarily. Mosaic laws regarding marriage among family members wouldnt be written for another 500 years. In addition, in the Bible words like sister and brother were used loosely and could refer to a more distant relative as well as a true sibling.

Who Is Abraham In The Bible
According to the Bible, Abraham is the father of the Jewish people and Judaism. He made a covenant with God, who promised Abraham would be the father of a great nation. He is an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
Abrahams story is told in Genesis, chapters 11 through 25. Questions remain as to the age of Isaac with some scholars saying that he was still just a boy, while others say he was nearing “manhood youth.” Regardless, Isaac was unaware of God’s sacrificial plan for him, and asked his father, “Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” , to which Abraham replied, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” , which many Christians have asserted is a foreshadowing of the event to Jesus‘ sacrifice upon the Cross as reported in the New Testament.
Regardless, after shrewdly tiring out Isaac by making him carry the wood for his sacrifice up the mountain, “Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son” , but an angel of the Lord stopped him and commended him for his willingness to sacrifice his son out of obedience and fear of God. The angel of the Lord said to Abraham:
Because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as sand on the seashore .

Temporal Significance
Abraham was one hundred years old before his covenant son, Isaac, was born. Abraham had eight sons in all however, from Isaac the covenant people developed through Ishmael came many of the Arab nations . Through Keturahâs sons came the Midianites and others.
âThe vast population of the Arab, Moslem, and Israeli world which claim to be descendants of Abraham numbers approximately one hundred million. When one adds to that figure the deceased ancestors, and the estimates of future posterities of those groups, plus other descendants of Abraham such as the past, present, and future members of the Nephite-Lamanite cultures, the lost ten tribes, and the Latter-day Saints, he sees what the Lord meant concerning the innumerable and unmeasurable blessing of posterity.â

In a literal sense Abrahamâs posterity will have no end because his righteous descendants will go on through eternity bringing forth posterity .
