B The Promise Of Judgment Against Gog
1. Gods fury against Gog in a great earthquake.
And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel, says the Lord GOD, that My fury will show in My face. For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
a. When Gog comes against the land of IsraelMy fury will show in My face: Yahweh vowed that though Gog thought Israel would be an easy conquest , His own fury would rise against Gog and his allies.
i. Fury will show in My face: The reaction to the audacity and effrontery of the invasion of Gog and his forces was stated in bold terms and a vivid anthropomorphism . The picture is of the breath which an angered man inhales and exhales through his nose. Gods patience would be exhausted with the repeated attempts of Israels enemies to annihilate her.
b. Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel: One way that God would defend Israel and come against Gog was to send a great earthquake. It isnt immediately apparent how this earthquake would harm only the hostile attacking armies, but that is apparently the case.
The Application In Revelation
Whether the precise historical application of Ezekiels prophecy can be identified for certain is irrelevant.
The point is this. A vicious enemy possessing seemingly overwhelming power would come against the Lords people. But Israel would not be vanquished. Jehovah himself would intervene and be their Savior.
In the Apocalypse, John borrows this imagery from the former prophet and applies it to what some scholars believe is a projected final assault against the truth at some point before the return of Christ. When this might occur is unknown perhaps in close proximity to the Judgment Day.
In what form it could manifest itself is also not revealed. But the outcome is certain.
It is possible that the expression the war may be analogous to the war of the great day of God the Almighty . The full fury of this conflict is depicted in Revelation 19:11-16.
A substantial case can be made for the view that this is simply an equivalent image for the Day of Judgment. On that day, God will demonstrate his decisive wrath against all his enemies.

How Should We Interpret Passages About Gog And Magog In The Bible Today
All eschatological systems are speculative in many respects. The point is that the supernatural worldview of ancient Israel and Judaism must inform our thinking. The cosmic enemy from the supernatural north, where the council of evil plotted against Yahwehs council, was a fixed part of the worldview of the biblical writersespecially when it comes to the end times.

Identifying Gog And Magog The Kings Of The North And South
Ezekiel 38:1-2: The word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal
Magog, Meshech, and Tubal were all sons of Japheth, who was one of the three sons of Noah. Jepheth and his family migrated to the area of modern-day Russia .
Gog is a person who rules over the land of Magog . Magog means the “Prince of Rosh.” Rosh is the old root word for the land of Russia.
God informs Gog and Magog in Ezekiel 38:15, “You will come from your place in the far North (the Hebrew word means “the uttermost part of the North.” What’s north of Jerusalem? Moscow. What is north Russia? Nothing. Meshech is the old name for the capital of Western Russia, which is known today as Moscow. Tubal is identified as a city in Siberia.
Gog is the King of the North. The King of the South is an Arab-African coalition.
Ezekiel 38:5-6 identifies the rest of the nations that are dragged into battle between Gog and Magog, versus the Kings of the South:Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets,also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troopsthe many nations with you.
Persia is a reference to modern-day Iran.
Cush describes present-day Ethiopia and the black nations of Central Africa.
Put and Libya are located in northern Africa.
Gomer is the people who settled in Germany.
Beth Togarmah is Asia Minor and Turkey.
The Sinister Supernatural North
The word north in Hebrew is tsaphon . It refers to one of the common directional points. But because of what Israelites believed lurked in the north, the word came to signify something otherworldly.
The most obvious example is Bashan, which was also associated with Mount Hermon. In Jewish theology, this is where the rebellious sons of God of Genesis 6 infamy descended to commit their act of treason.
But there was something beyond Bashanfarther norththat every Israelite associated with other gods hostile to Yahweh. Places like Sidon, Tyre, and Ugarit lay beyond Israels northern border. The worship of Baal was central in these places. These cities of Phoenicia and Syria were Baals home turf. The fact that the center of Baal worship was just across the border was a contributing factor in the apostasy of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
Specifically, Baals supposed home was a mountain, now known as Jebel al-Aqra, situated to the north of Ugarit. In ancient times it was simply known as Tsaphon . It was a divine mountain, the place where Baal was believed to hold council as he ruled the gods of the Canaanite pantheon. Baals palace was thought to be on the heights of Tsapanu/Zaphon.
In short, when an Israelite thought of the north in theological terms, he or she thought of Bashan, Mount Hermon, and Baal. Later Jews would have made connections to the serpent, the great adversary of Genesis 3.

a. Set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog: In this general context of Gods restoration of Israel, here Ezekiel prophesied against Gog and Magog . Here Gog is noted as the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.
i. Identifying Gog and the battle described in this chapter has interested interpreters and students of Bible prophecy since ancient times. It is a difficult problem without an entirely clear solution, for several reasons.
· There is no other Old Testament description of or connection with Gog . Gog seems to be a wholly new and strange enemy of Israel.
·Magog is mentioned as a descendant of Japheth in Genesis 10:2 but is never presented as a threat or enemy of Israel in any Old Testament passage.
· The phrase prince of Rosh has also been translated as chief prince, with the idea that the word rosh describes the greatness of the prince, not a place where the prince rules . Translators and interpreters do not agree if it should be prince of Rosh or chief prince.
ii. Notice also that none of these enemies are the old ones with which we are familiar as hostile to Israel. It is a new confederacy and antagonism.

Literal Geographical North: Harbinger Of Doom
Because it sat on the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Canaan found itself sandwiched between the homelands of ancient Near Eastern civilizations that would vie for control of the entire region: Egypt and Mesopotamia. Canaan, and therefore the people of Israel, would find itself being invaded from the north and south by foreign armies on the move. It would be occupied as a buffer zone between competing powers.
The Bible records several such incidents. But the most traumatic incursions into Canaan were always from the north:
- In 722 BC Assyria invaded from the north to conquer the 10 tribes of the northern Israelite kingdom and deported them to many corners of its empire.
- In a series of three invasions from 605 to 586 BC, Babylon moved in from the north and destroyed the southern kingdom, comprising only two tribes, Judah and Benjamin.
The trauma of these invasions became the conceptual backdrop for descriptions of the final, eschatological judgment of the disinherited nations and their divine overlords .
It is hard to overstate the trauma of the Babylonian invasion. The northern tribes, too, had met an awful fate, the outcome of which was well known to the occupants of the kingdom of Judah. But Judah was Davids tribe, and Jerusalem the home of Yahwehs temple. As such, the ground was holy and would surely never be taken by the enemyor so the kingdom of Judah thought.

What Genesis Says About Magog
Notice the heading does not say What Genesis Says About Gog and Magog. Thats because Genesis doesnt say anything about Gog. Genesis simply says Noah had a grandson named Magog:
Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood. The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras .
So Magog was a real person, born after the flood to Noahs son, Japheth.

The Old Testament Background Of Gog And Magog
Every serious student of Revelation is aware of the fact that the imagery of this final book of the New Testament is borrowed from the Old Testament.
Thus the Apocalypse becomes a sort of code book. The interpretative key to the vision is found in the Old Testament. The ultimate message of the Revelation of Christ is the glorious prophecy of his ultimate triumph for the Cause of the Almighty.
The background behind the names Gog and Magog is found in the book of Ezekiel. In that book, certain hostile forces rose against Israel.
Ezekiel was instructed to denounce these enemies and prophesy their overthrow by the Lord himself. Here is the text:
And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal: and I will turn thee about, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them handling swords .
The identification of this evil entity has long been a point of controversy among Bible scholars. Clearly, though, Ezekiels Gog represented a sinister power that came against ancient Israel but was defeated.

Where It All Started
The epic saga of the Bible began with Gods intention to rule over his new creation through humans, all the while being present with his heavenly host. In Eden, heaven had come to earth.
Of course, it all went awry in the wake of Gods decision to grant freedom to his imagers, both divine and human. The decision was necessary, for the creature could not truly be like the creator without sharing this attribute: the ability to truly exercise free will and choose between loyalty and rebellion.
What seems to us to be a long, drawn-out divine plan to restore that which was fallen was equally necessary. It might seem that God could have just stepped in after the fall and eliminated free will, along with the divine and human rebels who had abused it. Eden would be ensured and that would be that.
While that would produce the desired end, the original meansfree participation in Gods creation by Gods free-will agents, designed to be like himwould have been abandoned, amounting to a very flawed idea and spectacular failure. A resolution like that isnt fitting for the God of the Bible. Gods original objective must come about in the way he intended.
Earthly geography, as many historians have pointed out, is a key part of human destiny. For ancient Israelites, geography had both literal and supernatural qualities.
