There are many different reasons why Gods name was removed from the Bible. I will attempt to briefly discuss them here.

First off, it was a MISTAKE to remove Gods Name from the bible.

WHY ?

As Author of the Bible, Only God himself has the right to change or alter the Bible. God himself gave mankind a warning in his own Word The Bible to NOT add to NOR take away from his Words.

I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life. -BibleGateway

His Identity With Christ

Christ, the eternal Son, is Jehovah in essence, yet a distinct person within the Trinity . He is the visible God of the New Testament, just as the Angel of Jehovah was in the Old Testament.

The ministries of the Angel of Jehovah were many and varied. He was obviously Gods special representative to His people in the Old Testament, just as Christ was in the New Testament. Their ministries were surprisingly parallel and argue for the identification of the angel with Christ.

1. Revelation. Outstanding in this angels ministries of revelation was that of disclosing Gods name, Jehovah . Jesus Christ is the permanent revelation of God in bodily form , and He also revealed Gods name by word and person.

2. Commission. On the same occasion, the angel commissioned Moses to deliver Gods people from Egyptian bondage and lead them to the promised land . He also called and commissioned Gideon and Samson . Jesus Christ called and commissioned His disciples and us to deliver men from sin with the Gospel .

3. Protection. His protecting ministry was renowned in Davids days. Psalm 34:7 declares, The angel of Jehovah encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them . Jesus Christ is our Protector. We need not fear man because I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee .

4. Intercession. The Angel of Jehovah interceded for Israel when they were oppressed by their enemies. He asked God to act to deliver them . Our High Priest ever lives to intercede for us .

Jehovah established the everlasting gospel anciently

With students still working in pairs, ask them to read Moses 6:51â52, 64â66 and identify what Jehovah taught Adam. Tell them that in verses 51â52, Jehovah was speaking on behalf of the Father. Then ask:

• What did you notice about the gospel taught to Adam?

Indicate to students that in a later dispensation, Jehovah renewed His everlasting gospel through a covenant with Abraham known as the Abrahamic covenant. Divide the class in half. Assign half of the class to study Genesis 13:14â16 17:2â8 Abraham 1:18â19 2:8â11 and to make a list of the promises the Lord made to Abraham. Assign the other half of the class to study Genesis 17:1â5, 9 Abraham 1:19 2:8â11 and to make a list of what Abraham was required to do in order to receive the promised blessings.

While students are studying, copy the following chart on the board, leaving space to list responses:

After sufficient time, invite a few students from each group to come to the board and write their findings under the proper heading. Consider summarizing the Abrahamic covenant by displaying and having a student read aloud the following statement:

Invite students to share ways they can secure the promised blessings of this covenant for themselves and their families, past, present, and future.

Why Does This Matter

Although a great deal of debate has been dedicated to the pronunciation of YHWH, including Jehovah being thrown into the mix, ultimately, its not critical for us to know the original pronunciation.

Although knowing how they originally pronounced YHWH would give us some historical insights, we have to remember what the name stands for itself. YHWH, Jehovah, LORD, etc. all point to the nature of God. That hes not changing, that he keeps his promises, and that he wants to live in relationship with us.

Different languages around the world have different pronunciations of Jesus, for instance. We, in our American society, definitely do not pronounce Jesus the way it wouldve originally been spoken in Aramaic, Hebrew, or Greek. Nevertheless, the name has the same meaning for us as it did for the Early Church.

In the same way, Jehovah, YHWH, and LORD all remind us of the one who bears all these names and more.

Effect Of Adding To The Bible

When adding the word Jehovah to the New Testament the Watchtower makes an unsubstantiated assumption based on how they wish to interpret doctrine. This is a serious misrepresentation of scripture. Doctrine should be formed by scripture scripture should not be changed to support doctrine.

Inaccurately inserting the word Jehovah into the New Testament changes the meaning of Jesus message to his followers in a number of ways.

One important affect is that the Watchtower attempts to use the word Jehovah to prove that only Jehovah’s Witnesses will be saved. The book Reasoning from the Scriptures claims use of God’s name is one of the 10 things that identify true worshippers. Watchtower publications quote Romans 10:13 to show that use of the word Jehovah is a requirement for salvation.

“We stand now at the brink of the greatest tribulation of all, when Jehovah’s storm wind will sweep wickedness from the face of this earth, clearing the way for a paradise of eternal peace.Will you be one who “calls on the name of Jehovah” in faithfulness? Yet an examination of the Emphatic Diaglott, published by the Watchtower Society shows that the word used in this passageis not YHWH but Kyrios – Lord.

Just prior to this verse Romans 10:9 states “Jesus is Lord ” and so it follows that Romans 10:13 refers toJesus and identifying Jesus is the requirement for salvation.

Why Is The Pronunciation Of Gods Name In Ancient Hebrew Unknown

Ancient Hebrew was written without vowels, using only consonants. The Hebrew-speaking reader could easily provide the appropriate vowels. However, after the Hebrew Scriptures were completed, some Jews adopted the superstitious belief that it was wrong to utter Gods personal name. When they read aloud a scripture that contained Gods name, they substituted expressions such as Lord or God. As centuries passed, this superstition spread and the ancient pronunciation was eventually lost. b

Some feel that the divine name was pronounced Yahweh, while others suggest different possibilities. A Dead Sea Scroll containing a portion of Leviticus in Greek transliterates the name Iao. Early Greek writers also suggest the pronunciations Iae, I·a·be, and I·a·ou·e, but none of these can be proved to be the pronunciation used in ancient Hebrew. c

A Prayer Of Praise To Jehovah

Father God, thank You for revealing Yourself to us in such a personal way. The name Jehovah teaches us so many wonderful things about who you are, most importantly Your presence with us.

But there is the promise of so many more blessings. We praise You for being our Provider, our Peace, our Deliverer, and our Healer. In fact, it would take us forever to list everything that You’ve promised and all that You’ve done. So how do we respond to Your grace and mercy? Let us give ourselves, for that is what Your Word says You really want: our hearts, minds, and spirits.

We pray that as we have learned more about Your name, our gratitude, joy, and trust in You would grow. Thank You, Father God, Jehovah, for Your desire to be known. Help us seek a deeper connection to You. Amen.

Learning more about the name of God goes beyond being a simple study. If we take the time to reflect on what “Jehovah” is meant to convey, we can’t help but be changed. For when He revealed it, God sent a clear message about His nature: that He is fully present with His people. The Hebrew word, sabaoth, often has a military connotation such as:

• A group of fighting men or an army .
• Sometimes sabaoth refers to the hosts of heaven , picturing God as Lord of the multitudes of angels, which are numbered as a thousand thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand .
• Sabaoth also is used to describe the innumerable stars in the night sky .

So, scholars have debated the actual pronunciation of the True name of God from the original Hebrew.

Guesses have ranged from Yahweh to Yehowah, to Jehovah.

Why Not Included

You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth p. 41 makes the comment that “We learn God’s name from the Bible, where it appears about 7,000 times.” It is significant that YHWH appeared 7,000 times in the Old Testament but never in the New Testament. Even the Watchtower Society’s Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures and the Emphatic Diaglott do not include Jehovah in the New Testament.

The Bible does not specifically explain why the New Testament does not include the Tetragrammaton however, there are several possible reasons.

From a practical viewpoint, the reason YHWH does not appear in the New Testament is that it was not actively used in the first century A.D. Out of respect and fear of taking the name of God in vain the word Lord was spoken in place of YHWH for several hundred years before Jesus. It appears YHWH was no longer in regular use by the time of the Babylonian invasion over 500 years prior to Jesus, at least in languages other then Hebrew. The book of Daniel is written in both Hebrew and Aramaic, with the Aramaic portion being the larger section. YHWH is used in the Hebrew portions of Daniel but never in the Aramaic portion.

As early as 250 B.C.E the Septuagint Greek translation of the Tenach replaced YHWH with ‘Kyrios’ . For example the Hebrew text of Leviticus 24:16 was changed from: “And whoever blasphemes the name of YHWH shall surely be put to death” to “And he that names the name of the Lord, Let him die the death”
