Contrary to popular belief, the Bible says we do not go to heaven or hell when we die. We sleep in the grave until the resurrection as the Bible says: “And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt” .
The entrance to heaven is not automatic for people who have simply tried to be good. The Bible says: “But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lambs Book of Life” . The Bible plainly tells us what the punishment of the wicked is. Turn with me to 2 Thessalonians 1:9, “Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power.” Quite plain and quite clear! Does Everyone Go To Heaven Or Only Good People
Once Jesus paid the price for mans sin, and rose again from the grave assuring forgiveness and new life for His people, it became possible for anyone to get to heaven, simply by faith in Jesus Christ. Because of mans wicked tendencies, he could not be good enough to be with God in heaven of his own merits.

The divide created by sin between God and man is so great, that only the blood of Jesus Christ – God incarnate – could bridge the chasm. Because of this fact, no one is good enough to go to heaven. Even Christians, who will go to heaven, are not going because they are good enough, or because of an open-door policy at the pearly gates.
Ultimately, God wants all people to come to Him in faith, but not everyone will, and no one can get into heaven in their sin by being good. In fact, everyone in heaven will be a sinner saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and Gods promise of forgiveness.
