Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

Bible Study on FEAR | How to Overcome Fear and Anxiety

On our spiritual journey we must never forget our foundational fear of the Lordour reverence for Him our recognition of our dependence on Him. This proper perspective should lead to appreciation and praiseand a deeper love of the God who has given us everything we have and ever will receive. He loved us so much He even gave His own Son!

So our relationship with God grows on that foundation. We love Him because He first loved us, John wrote .

What does that love do? If we follow His steps and let Him live in us, we will not need to fear the only thing worth fearing: Gods day of judgment .

As a result, fear is conquered. John summed up the ultimate goal this way: There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear .

We can go to God with our fears. We can seek more of His Spirit. We can grow in faith in His ability to defeat anything that threatens us. We can find comfort and security in His loving care.

The fear and loathing of this age will be replaced with love and rejoicing forevermore!

Continue Seeking The Lord By Continually Reaffirming Your Faith In Him

The Hebrew here is elliptical to produce an abrupt effect: Unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living … ! Calvin gives the sense, Had I not relied on the promise of God, and been assuredly persuaded that he would safely preserve me, and had I not continued firm in this persuasion, I had utterly perished: There was no other remedy.

The Hebrew verbs of verse 14 are singular, as if David is talking to himself. In a time when God seems silent and the crisis is severe, youve got to talk to yourself and reaffirm the goodness of God and your own need to keep waiting on Him. This isnt just passive stoicism its an active mental attitude that says, I believe that God is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him . As often as you veer off those thoughts, you bring your thinking back on course and keep it there, just like keeping a boat on a compass course in a storm.

Using Prayer To Remove Fear From Mind And Heart

Prayer is a powerful tool we as Christians have at our disposal. It is constant communion with God our Father.

When I think about the religions where you have to pray through a priest or be in a temple, I am overcome with gratitude that through Jesus Christ we have direct access to God .

Psalms 34:17-18 says:

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

We can pray to God no matter where we are, what we are doing, or what is on our hearts. While we may not always have time to open our Bible and look up scriptures about overcoming fear, it takes only moments to pray to God.

All of our feelings of fear, worry, and anxiety can be communicated up to God in a moment.

My Story: Step Three to Overcome Fear

As a writer pursuing publication, I have been so blessed by the power of prayer. Anytime I get anxious about a submission or lost about where to go next, I can communicate those feelings to God in prayer and ask Him to help me remove my fear from mind and heart.

What surprises me about prayer is that even without receiving an immediate answer, prayer encourages me and uplifts me.

  • Prayer is an active reminder that:
  • God is with me
  • God is watching over me
  • God cares for me
  • God has a sovereign plan
  • Gods strength and Spirit is with me
  • God is trustworthy and faithful

The Best Way to Overcome Fear and Worry Overload

It is necessary for salvation.

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liarsthey will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. Revelation 21:8

This is a hard truth. To think that the fearful are counted among murderers and liars. Frightening. But its necessary for eternal salvation that we give up fear. One major reason is that just before Jesus comes back, we will all have to choose between God and Satan.

Facing persecution for our choice will not be easy. And thats why we will need to be fearless.

It is necessary for your peace of mind and mental health

Peace I leave with you my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. Luke 14:27

When you spend time consumed by fear, the peace that Jesus has made available for you cannot make its way into your heart.

It is necessary for claiming your blessings

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: Go through the camp and tell the people, Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you for your own. Joshua 1:9-11

Your presence could make monsters disappear and booboos get all better. In Gods arms is our place of safety. When anxious or afraid run into His arms through worship, grab ahold of Him and dont let go. You are never more protected than when resting in His arms.

Focus On The Facts Of Your Situation

So very often, there is no truth to what we fear. Much of the things we are afraid of are not even actually real.

Take the prophet Elijah for example. He was very afraid to face Ahab and his cruel wife Jezeebel. His reason?

Then Elijah said to them, I am the only one of the LORDs prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 1 Kings 18:22

He felt like he was the ONLY one in Israel. He said it more than once.

He replied, I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too. 1 Kings 19:10

He felt like he was the only one being obedient to God. But was this true?

Not at all.

In fact, God told him otherwise.

Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israelall whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him. 1 Kings 19:18

Its interesting that Elijah felt this way after a very glorious Mount Carmel experience where God showed up with such power that the peoples hearts were turned back to true worship. Elijah needed to keep the truth in front of him.

He was NOT alone. God never leaves his anointed ones to fend for themselves. He doesnt promise ease but he does promise his presence.

Finally Pray For Others

HOW TO OVERCOME FEAR — WHAT BIBLE SAYS ABOUT FEAR .

Another way you can help , is by praying for other people. If youre riding out a storm, pray for your neighbors who are doing the same. Or if you worry youre not good enough, pray for all the young women out there who are growing up with even more anxiety and self-esteem issues than you mightve experienced. Praying intercessory prayers for others, is such a great way to set aside your own issues, and remember that those around you also have many worries and concerns theyre grappling with. Perhaps you can ease their burden, and ask the Lord to give them peace, through your prayers.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.James 5:16

I hope that these seven truths from Scripture help you fear less, and love more! The more we can rely on God, and trust Him with every detail of our lives, the less fear we will have. Always remember, you are loved greatly by your Father in Heaven!

Give Your Anxiety To Jesus

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7 NIV

The Greek word translated cast is very descriptive. Its the same word used to describe how the disciples threw their garments over the donkey Jesus would ride into Jerusalem. Do that with your anxiety today. If necessary, write your worries on a piece of paper, and then throw them into a river or leave them at the altar at your church. Such a physical act symbolizes casting all your worries onto Jesus, and leaving them there.

Focus On The Positive

Like the faithful people of old, we should focus beyond this fearful world on the positive future God has in store. We can also meditate on and appreciate the comfort and peace God gives now.

Paul directed our thinking toward the positive: Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthymeditate on these things .

He also often extolled the importance of gratitude: Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you .

The Struggle With Removing Fear From Mind And Heart

At the start of 2020, I chose a word for the year: audacity. In my journal, I wrote what audacity would mean to me this year. Having audacity would mean to start taking risks and stop playing it safe. It would mean to stop worrying and letting fear drive my decisions.

However, it wasnt as simple as writing down an intention and then living out that intention. Even though I set out with high hopes and concrete plans for 2020, much of the year has been ruled by fear.

The coronavirus pandemic shattered my illusion of certainty, and fear quickly moved in. As I started to come around and see what the coronavirus could teach us over the course of the year, I realized how important it was to put my hope in God, who was certain. Yet still, my struggle overcoming fear continued.

Learning how to remove fear from the mind and heart and live with audacity was a journey. And that journey began with recognizing the spirit of fear.

Revise Your False Beliefs

How to Overcome Fear and Anxiety as Christians | Online Bible Study | Gospel of John

How do ideas about people or life influence your worry-related habit? Your ideas may have gotten off track in a number of different ways, but think about these possibilities:

  • Do you believe that you must pull yourself up by your own bootstraps?

It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.

  • Do you think of yourself as a born loser in the game of life?

I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

  • Do you believe that your circumstances are beyond Gods power to help?

Dont worry about anything instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.

Scan the Bible for its messages about how unnecessary worry really is. Make a conscious decision to identify and abandon any concepts about yourself, others, or life in general that contribute to your worry. Believe God, and trust in His power to meet your every need.
