What Does The Name Grace Mean In The Bible

What Is The Point Of Hesed Rachamim And Hen

What does the Bible mean by “grace”?

The answer is very simpleGod wants to restore us, to bring us back into relationship with Him and those He has placed in our lives. In Romans 2:4, the Apostle Paul says that Gods kindness is meant to bring us back to repentance. But His will is grace and favor. Exodus 34: 6 concludes:

Adonai, merciful , and gracious , slow to anger, abounding in love and truth .

The end result is that Gods love is tied to His truth . Because of his emet , his anger does burn hot against sin and injustice, which is an act of graciousness. Because no act of wickedness will go unpunished, and goodness and righteousness will not go unrewarded.

But God is also slow to anger, because He is gracious. The truth isnt to shame us, but to bring us closer to Him. The beauty in all of this is that our salvation, and I would add our spiritual growth, is by faith, through grace, and not by worksIt is a gift of God, lest anyone should boast .

Christian Meanings: What Is Grace

Grace. It is a word that is thrown around a lot, especially in church and among Christian friends, but what is it? What does the word grace mean? By the simplest definition grace is unmerited favor or unconditional love. While this is a fine definition on its own, the problem is that we still have to define the definition.

First, lets start with unmerited. To merit something means to earn it or deserve it. A child might merit a special treat by good behavior or by doing chores. In the Boy Scouts of America, young boys can earn Merit Badges by showing that they know how to do something or can explain it to others. Boy Scouts cannot earn these badges unless they have completed the required activities, thus meriting the badge. So unmerited then means to receive something that you did not earn or something that you do not deserve. In the same way unconditional means that something is not limited by conditions, such as our good behavior.

So how does God show grace to us? God shows grace to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. When He was on the cross, Jesus took all the punishment that we deserved and placed it on Himself. On the cross, Jesus gave us the gift of a relationship with God, something that we cannot earn by ourselves nor do we deserve. God loves His children so much that He shows them grace by Christ taking away all of the punishment that we get for disobeying God and giving us good gifts instead.

Frustrating The Grace Of God

Hebrews 12:15Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled

It is possible for us to frustrate the grace of God. One way to do that is to try to achieve justification by good works or law keeping. Another way is to allow things by bitterness and unforgiveness into our hearts .

The Significance And Meaning Of Grace

For many believers, the concept of grace goes little beyond the basic definition of unmerited favor or the free gift of God. But since grace is at the very heart, indeed, it is the very foundation and fountain of true Christianity, we should have a better grasp of this important word and its truth.

The ramifications of Gods grace to us in Christ vitally affect our lives on every hand. Throughout the New Testament the effects of Gods grace are emphasized. Everywhere we turn, we run into this word . In fact, the Lord Himself is described as the very epitome and manifestation of Gods grace.

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,

Furthermore, the doctrine of Gods Grace in Christ is multi-sided. As a doctrine of the Word it touches every area of truth or doctrine in one way or another. Every aspect of doctrine is related to grace. It is no wonder grace is an important word and one that Paul desires to be experienced by all. It is a fountain from which we must all drink deeply, but it is one that runs counter to our own natural tendencies. Rather than drink from Gods fountain, we tend to build our own broken cisterns.

Jeremiah 2:13 For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns, That can hold no water.

Definition of Peace

The word for peace is eirhnh. It apparently comes from eirw which means to join. It means a state of untroubled tranquillity, a state without war or dividing factions or enmity. It refers to a state of harmony and well being. However, in the use of this word in Scripture, there are several aspects of peace which God’s grace gives according to the varied contexts.

    DescriptionThe Kinds of Peace
The Peace of Reconciliation, Peace with God

Peace with God refers to the peace of salvation wherein the barriers, like mans sin and Gods holiness, which separate man from God are removed through faith in Gods gracious work in Christ. In Ephesians 2, Christ is seen as the Peacemaker.

Ephesians 2:14-18 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one, and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, 16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity. 17 And He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near 18 for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

Romans 5:1 Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

The Meaning Of Numbers: The Number 5

The number 5 symbolizes God’s grace, goodness and favor toward humans and is mentioned 318 times in Scripture. Five is the number of grace, and multiplied by itself, which is 25, is ‘grace upon grace’ . The Ten Commandments contains two sets of 5 commandments. The first five commandments are related to our treatment and relationship with God, and the last five concern our relationship with others humans.

Benefits Of Gods Redemption For Humanity

As previously stated, God made a perfect covenant with us to redeem us from the slavery of sin, which was the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary, where he gave his life and freed us from all guilt. Here the true plan of God for humanity was reflected and shaped and made known to us the character.

In this way, humanity would benefit from eternal life by accepting Jesus Christ as our only and true Savior.

But God also revealed to us the lie of Satan, who tries to deceive and persuade humanity to live free and far from Gods perfect laws.

It encourages us to act disobedient and not to believe in the Holy Scriptures.

Therefore, today we can see the world wrapped in sin, pain, and rebellion, in which death wants to reign in the universe as a whole.

But for those of us who do believe in Gods purpose, redemption and his love have saved us from falling into the lies of the evil one, and we also recognize that Gods laws are eternal and immovable and eternal, for which what he has promised, he will fulfill it in time. As can be seen in the following quote:

But now, freed from sin, and made servants to God, you have as your fruit sanctification, and finally eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, while the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. No one can serve two masters for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will cherish the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money

Giving joy

Mainly, the word grace means that which gives joy or pleasure, giving the meaning of beauty or loveliness . We see this in the New Testament, when Jesus spoke in Nazareth. For His hearers wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth . Likewise, Paul counseled the believers at Colossae that their speech should be alway with grace .

Pleasant feeling

Also, grace gives the meaning of a beautiful or pleasant feeling expressed toward a person, such as sympathy, gentleness, or kindness. Joseph found favor, literally, grace, in the sight of Pharaoh . Comforting Verses To Reaffirm God’s Grace

1. “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’ .

Gods grace is sufficient, and this verse reaffirms that Gods grace is big enough to cover every area of our lives. Many times, it is easy to want to compartmentalize sections of our lives from God. Gods grace covers the good, the bad, and the ugly. Gods grace fills in the gaps where we fall short and make mistakes. That is great news! Today, I invite you to allow Gods grace to be sufficient and cover all areas in your life. God is not concerned with perfection, but for us to grow each day depending on Him more. Gods grace shines brightest in the broken places of our lives.

2. and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus .

Despite our age, race, or socio-economic status, Gods grace does not discriminate. Gods grace is available for everyone who accepts Christ as their Lord and Savior. Through Christs redemption of our sinful humanity, Gods grace abounds and is overflowing. In the midst of our sin, Gods grace still covers, strengthens, and cleanses us from unrighteousness. Grace is available for both the saved and the sinner. The purpose of Gods grace is for Christians to grow closer to Him, recognizing their human limitations.

3. We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are .

Calvin And Reformed Theology

Calvin and Luther believed free will does not co-operate with God’s grace which, according to them, cannot be rejected . The Lutheran Augsburg Confession says of baptism, “Lutherans teach that it is necessary to salvation and that by baptism the grace of God is offered and that children are to be baptized, who by baptism, being offered to God, are received into God’s favor.” The French reformer John Calvin expanded and further developed these themes in his systematic Institutes of the Christian Religion in 1536.

The logical structure of Calvinism is often expressed as an acronym. These five categories do not comprise Calvinism in its entirety. They simply encapsulate its central, definitive doctrines.

The notion that God has foreordained who will be saved is generally called predestination. The concept of predestination peculiar to Calvinism, “double-predestination“, is the most controversial expression of the doctrine. According to Reformed theology, the “good news” of the gospel of Christ is that God has freely granted the gift of salvation to those the Holy Spirit causes to believe what he freely grants to some , he withholds from others .

The relatively radical positions of Reformed theology provoked a strong reaction from both Roman Catholics and Lutherans.
