Redeem (Bible Words Exposed series)

Redemption is one of those things, which often must be experienced to be completely understood. Once the character in a book or movie has redeemed themselves, their story begins to show a renewed sense of peace and satisfaction. They are able to move forward with a feeling of newfound freedom. They accomplished their goal reparation has been made.

This is what God wants us to experience every day. Because of redemption, we can live in peace knowing that, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed .

The Avenger Meaning Of Redemption:

In the event that these aforementioned close relatives passed away as a result of an altercation with someone else, whether the death was accidental or not, Mosaic law established that the guardian-kinsman should avenge the passing of his close relative.

He is called the blood avenger. However, this did not remain a custom for the entirety of the Old Testament.

We can find the Bible verse that contains the avenger description of redemption in: Exodus 21.

12 Anyone who strikes a person with a fatal blow is to be put to death. 13 However, if it is not done intentionally, but God lets it happen, they are to flee to a place I will designate.

The Spiritual Meaning Of Redemption:

Old Testament theology contains the usage of the term redemption in the spiritual sense in many instances before Jesus came to Earth.

From there, the spiritual sense of the term divides itself into two: the Old Testament usage and New Testament usage.

The Spiritual Meaning of Redemption in the Old Testament:

The people of Israel applied the spiritual connotation of redeeming in the Hebrew Bible beautifully and exclusively in two ways: when describing Gods acts of power that liberated them from the Egyptians and when it came to Israels sin.

The connotation of release from foreign rule

When the God of Israel reveals himself to Abram, and then Moses when he promises to bring deliverance from the Egyptian bondage or slavery in Genesis 15:13, then Exodus 6:6, and later in Exodus 15:13, we find the first three mentions of the action of redeeming in the Bible in the first way described above.

This connotation of liberation from foreign rule continues in the prophetic books and almost takes a political tone in the Hebrew Bible.

Genesis 15:13:

13: Then the Lord said to him, Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.

13 In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.

What Does The Word Redeem Mean In Hebrew

What Does Redemption Mean? Ephesians 1:710, Part 1 ...

gaal- to deliver, redeem, act as a kinsman, avenge. The basic use of this word had to do with the deliverance of people or things that have been sold for debt. For example, in Leviticus 25:25-26 gala is used in such way: . If a poor man sold himself to another Israelite , then the nearest relative to that man had the responsibility to redeem him . The person who redeemed their family member is known as a kinsman. Also, following the eye for an eye theory, a redeemer was called the avenger of blood when taking on the responsibility of executing his brothers murderer .

Theres a book in the Bible that beautifully displays the responsibility of a kinsman-redeemer. In Ruth, Boaz redeemed Ruth and Noami because their husbands had passed away. The kinsman redeemer was expected to act in such a way in order to preserve the property, life, integrity, and family name of their relative.

There are moments in the Old Testament when this word is used to describe God.

Therefore say to the children of Israel: I am the Lord I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

-Exodus 6:6

You in Your mercy have led forthThe people whom You have redeemed You have guided them in Your strengthTo Your holy habitation.

You have with Your arm redeemed Your people,The sons of Jacob and Joseph.

Pidyon: The Hebrew Word For Redemption

The word for redemption in Hebrew is Pidyon. But what is it and why would anyone need redemption? Does redemption cost anything, and if so who has to pay? Youre about to find out.

Korah was a tribal leader in Israel that led a rebellion against Moses while the nation of Israel was in the wilderness on route from Egypt to the Promised Land. With his status as a member of the Levites, he was able to minister in the tabernacle. Being jealous of Aaron, the brother of Moses who had been appointed High Priest, Korah demanded that he instead be the one to serve as High Priest.

The Book of Numbers records his grim fate. He, his followers, and their families and possessions were swallowed by the ground in a judgment by God. But in a marvelous picture of grace, a few of his surviving descendants nearly 400 years later wrote some of the Psalms.

Psalm 49 is one of the Psalms attributed to the sons of Korah. They knew full well the consequences of sin. In verses 6 through 9 they wrote of redemption and its price:

They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

What can the Ancient Hebrew pictographs tell us about the word Pidyon? Pidyon, as used here, is spelled Pey Dalet Yood Vav Noon.

Pey is the picture of the open mouth and means to speak.

In the New Testament the redemption word group is used to refer both to deliverance from sin and to freedom from captivity. In Christian theology, Jesus is sometimes referred to as a Redeemer. This refers to the salvation he is believed to have accomplished, and is based on the metaphor of redemption, or “buying back”.

Occurrences Of The Word Redemption In The Bible

Redemption (Bible Words Exposed series)

Paul wrote in Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

What an exclamation!!! Personally I, and I suppose everyone, am going through a tough time with this body of death. As I get older, I am more aware of its desires and those desires seem to grow stronger. Being a 30-something single male, Ive had marriage and being able to afford a comfortable lifestyle for a family on my mind quite a bit enough to call it a real burden. I know God will provide but its definitely a struggle to wait.

I was looking at Ephesians and came across the word in chapter 1. Since Ive never looked into the subject myself, I thought Id investigate it a bit. Looking at the Strongs definition and the contexts of each occurrence as I usually do, I was able to see how the word is used throughout the new testament. Ive heard that the concept is a deep and complicated one and although I dont want to take anything away from our redemption, it doesnt seem to be as complicated after all. There are many other things at play of course Hope, the Holy Spirit, the flesh and many other things but from a simple perspective, it doesnt seem too bad of a concept to grasp.

The word occurs 10 times and a definition of redemption is the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment or clearing of debt. That seems to fit with the context of the passages the word redemption occurs.

What Does The Word Salvation Mean In The Bible

Salvation means being saved from the penalty of our sins. God created Adam and Eve perfect. But they chose to sin and thus the sinsickness infected all their descendants . Humans broke the law of righteousness . And because of that they were sentenced to death For the wages of sin is death .

But the Lord in His infinite mercy planned a way of salvation and redemption through Jesus Christ. What did Jesus Christ do to save us?

First: He paid the just penalty for our transgressions because He loves us. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life .

Second: He kept the law perfectly to become the Lord our rightoussness and make it possible for us to overcome as well.

Without a redeemer, condemnation covers us and we remain guilty before God . Without accepting the blood of Jesus on our behalf, we have indignation and wrath for without the shedding of blood there can be no forgiveness of sin .

But praise the Lord that through repentance from our sins and faith in Christ our Righteousness we can legally be pardoned, forgiven, cleared, justified, cleansed, and then transformed into obedient children .

And for Gods salvation, the redeemed will give praise and glory to Him throughout eternity . Gods love is truly amazing for Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down ones life for his friends .

In His service,

Redemption Is Already Accomplished But Not Yet Complete

Humans still retain the image of God, which accounts for any semblance of goodness and enables any sense of progress . However, life is not as it should be in this fallen world. Theologians have differed over the means by which Adams sin has been passed down to every person but the reality of death provides sufficient confirmation that no one is exempt . Though Charles Manson and Billy Graham took completely different paths with their lives, both are subject to the death sentence as are you and I. The Bible thus describes our common plight: we are dead in our trespasses and sins and we are by nature children under wrath .

Benefits Of Gods Redemption For Humanity

As previously stated, God made a perfect covenant with us to redeem us from the slavery of sin, which was the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary, where he gave his life and freed us from all guilt. Here the true plan of God for humanity was reflected and shaped and made known to us the character.

In this way, humanity would benefit from eternal life by accepting Jesus Christ as our only and true Savior.

But God also revealed to us the lie of Satan, who tries to deceive and persuade humanity to live free and far from Gods perfect laws.

It encourages us to act disobedient and not to believe in the Holy Scriptures.

Therefore, today we can see the world wrapped in sin, pain, and rebellion, in which death wants to reign in the universe as a whole.

But for those of us who do believe in Gods purpose, redemption and his love have saved us from falling into the lies of the evil one, and we also recognize that Gods laws are eternal and immovable and eternal, for which what he has promised, he will fulfill it in time. As can be seen in the following quote:

But now, freed from sin, and made servants to God, you have as your fruit sanctification, and finally eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, while the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. No one can serve two masters for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will cherish the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money

God As Redeemer In The Old Testament

What Does Redemption Mean

The object of God’s redemptive activity is usually the people as a whole, rather than individuals. God is said to “ransom” His people and to be their gl. His work of redemption is closely connected with the messianic deliverance the Israelites expected from Him.

It is clear from these examples that the idea of payment of ransom is absent. Sometimes the idea of ransom is explicitly rejected, as in Is 52.3: “you were sold for nothing, and without money you shall be redeemed ” the meaning is that the people, taken captive because of their sins, were set free by the power of God when their guilt had been expiated. In one text, it is said that ransom is paid for the exiles who are about to be released from Babylonia: “I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Saba in return for you. I give men andpeoples in exchange for your life” . But this is clearly an example of poetic imagery. Lands and peoples would, indeed, pass under the control of Cyrus in the series of conquests that would result in the freeing of the Jewish captives these victories are given him so that he might, according to God’s plan, release God’s people. Yet the riches of conquest are more properly hire than ransom, for the one who received them was not the one who held captive, and he that did received nothing. Elsewhere it is said more accurately, “He Shall let my exiles go free without price or ransom” .

Living In Light Of Redemption

Living in a fallen world as Christians means we will experience trials and tribulations and will continue to struggle with our own temptations. We are forgiven, but God is not finished with us yet . Consequently, longing for a better world, even a perfect world, is not a form of escapism. Rather, it is the Christians rightful anticipation of a promise made by the One who justly pronounced a curse on this world and then lovingly took that curse upon Himself in order to redeem people for His glory.

What are some practical steps that you can use to share the story of redemption with others?

Recognize that we are all products of the fall and in need of redemption. Its easy to forget that people who bother us are often people just like us. We are all affected and afflicted by the fall. When we view people through the lens of being fallen , we can be more sympathetic. Thus, instead of bearing a grudge against them we should recognize the need to point them to their Redeemer. Jesus stated it this way: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments .
