Proverbs : 10 The Head The Heart And The Bowels

Wisdom and Understanding | Dr. David Jeremiah | Colossians 1:9-14

In the Eastern and Western cultures, different parts of the human body symbolize the ideas of understanding and feeling. In the East one âunderstandsâ in his heart and âfeelsâ in his bowels in the West one âunderstandsâ in his head, or mind, and âfeelsâ in his heart. Contrast Doctrine and Covenants 9:8, which says âyour bosom shall burn within you,â with Proverbs 2:10, which says that âwisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soulâ .

What Is The True Wisdom

Wisdom is commonly defined as the quality of being wise, to include having good judgment and knowledge of what is true. We tend to think of wisdom as something that we acquire with age and experience as we live out our lives. We remember King Solomon in the Old Testament as someone who exemplified wisdom. Solomon asked for and received his wisdom as a gift from God when he pleased God by showing great humility in asking Him for wisdom to discern between good and bad instead of asking for long life, riches, or other earthly things . God was so pleased with Solomon’s humble request that, in addition to wisdom, He also gave Solomon riches and honor. And He added a bonus: long life if Solomon would keep His commandments.

As in Solomon’s case, true wisdom is special and comes only from God. James tells us “But the wisdom from above is first of all pure then it is peace-loving, gentle.” True wisdom is not necessarily related to age or experience. It has to do with virtuous living and knowledge of heavenly things, not earthly things. In other words, true wisdom is knowing God’s will and living accordingly. Speaking about how one should live as a truly wise person, James says “Then let him by his noble living show forth his works with the humility of true wisdom.” The Disciple Group suggests that you ask God for the gift of true wisdom during your prayer time this week. As with Solomon, He just might give you even more than you ask for.

Ecclesiastes : 12 The Importance Of Loving To Work

Elder Adam S. Bennion said:

âYou remember what the Lord has said: âIn the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread.â And there is this wonderful passage in John. When the Savior was criticized for something he did on the Sabbath, he answered his accusers by saying, âMy Father worketh hitherto, and I work.â

âAnd then that memorable passage from Ecclesiastes:

ââThe sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: ⦠but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.â

âAll my life I have enjoyed the blessed privilege of living with people who love to work. I rejoice in a helpmate who delights in keeping up our home. â¦

âSomeone has said, âHappy is the man who has work he loves to do,â but somebody else has added the basic fundamental thought, âHappy is the man who loves the work he has to do.ââ

Proverbs 1: 24 Spare The Rod

Brigham Young lived in an era when parents, especially fathers, were often severe and punished their children frequently. His advice is remarkably modern, but it does not advocate the permissive philosophy by which so many parents today rear their offspring: âInstead of using the rod, I will teach my children by example and by precept. I will teach them every opportunity I have to cherish faith, to exercise patience, to be full of long-suffering and kindness. It is not by the whip or the rod that we can make obedient children but it is by faith and by prayer, and by setting a good example before them.â

In an age when child abuse is becoming all too common, the admonition of Brigham Youngâs counselor, George A. Smith, still rings true: âMy opinion is that the use of the rod is very frequently the result of a want of understanding on the part of a spoiled parent ⦠though of course the use of the rod in some cases might be necessary but I have seen children abused when they ought not to have been, because King Solomon is believed to have made that remark, which, if he did, in nine cases out of ten referred to mental rather than physical correction.â

In Doctrine and Covenants 121:41â43, the Lord makes it clear how He expects His Saints to accomplish their disciplining, not only in the Church, as this passage is often interpreted, but also in their homes.

Ecclesiastes 1: 3 As The Tree Falls

Wisdom Means What In The Bible

Brigham Young interpreted this expression as follows, tieing it to death and the Judgment: âEre long we will have to lay down these tabernacles and go into the spirit world. And I do know that as we lie down, so judgment will find us, and that is scriptural âas the tree falls so it shall lie,â or, in other words, as death leaves us so judgment will find us.â

God: The Wise Creator

God is always wise, it is an integral part of His unchanging nature. And His wisdom is far greater than we could ever comprehend. It is unsearchable! Because He is perfect in wisdom, his ways and his decisions are superior and to be trusted.

Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

Gods ways are not our ways, but He is always wise. Consider the life of Joseph. He was sold into slavery by his older jealous brothers, falsely accused of adultery, and imprisoned for years. But God in His wisdom had a plan. Through Joseph, the nation of Israel was saved. God, in His wisdom, meant it for good !

Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose. -Yoda

Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. -Confucius

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. -Gandalf

Wisdom. When I think of wisdom I tend to think of the long grey beard of Gandalf, or the quiet demeanor of Yoda, or the pithy statements of Confucius. But is this what the Bible means by wisdom?

The dictionary definition is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment. Certainly Yoda, Confucius, and Gandalf would fit within that definition. But the Bible defines wisdom a bit differently. In Scripture, wisdom is directly related to living in accordance with how God has ordered the world.

Where Does Wisdom Come From

The fear of the Lord is the beginning and the end of wisdom. It is a profound, enduring, pure reverence and respect for the Lord and His word, the Bible, rather than a dread of being hit by lightning or killed.

Because obedience usually results from fear, God has said that He prefers obedience to sacrifice. Knowledge often follows when someone obeys what they know to be accurate, but sometimes obedience comes before understanding. Respect for God and awe of Him and His Word are the foundations of wisdom. That is the beginning of wisdom, and actual knowledge can never exist in a place without respect for the Lord. Its simply not feasible.

Why Do We Need Wisdom

Wisdom plays a significant role in our lives because it enables us to handle situations in the best way possible to achieve the best outcomes that a person seeks while taking into account all the potential opportunities that may arise to alter the priority order and thereby alter goal-seeking behavior.

A wise person, in their decision-making, achieves their goals quickly and without haste, reducing the time and effort required to complete the different tasks of daily living and deal with any challenging situations that may arise.

A person who lacks wisdom risks getting into unpleasant situations and taking quick, irresponsible actions that he may regret. Or decisions are made solely on impulse without rigorous thought, planning, or understanding of the outcomes all the wisdom we know guards against such pitfalls.

As practical wisdom cultivates positive traits, it strives to shape a persons personality in the way everyone hopes for him. The human psyche aids in overcoming challenges, handling various situations logically, and achieving the most remarkable outcomes on an individual and social level.

Proverbs : 1819 Light For Darkness

President Brigham Young once commented on these verses:

âThe life of a Christian is said to be full of pain, tribulation, sorrow, and excruciating torments of fightings without and fears within, of anxieties, despair, gloominess, and mourning. His path is supposed to be spread with gins , pitfalls, and uncertainties, but this is a mistake, for âthe path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day,â while âthe wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips, but the just shall come out of trouble.â

âThe faith I have embraced has given me light for darkness, ease for pain, joy and gladness for sorrow and mourning, certainty for uncertainty, hope for despair.â

Proverbs : 7 What Does It Mean To Walk In Integrity

What Does Wisdom Mean In Proverbs

Elder Bruce R. McConkie pointed out that âthe complete development of manâs moral character in conformity with principles of justice and uprightness is termed integrity. A man of integrity is sound, incorruptible, and particularly strict about fulfilling the trusts reposed in him by others. The highest manifestation of integrity is exhibited by those who conform their conduct to the terms of those gospel covenants and promises which they have made. Integrity goes hand in hand with uprightness and righteousness, and the Lord loves those who have integrity of heart. âThe integrity of the upright shall guide themâ , and âThe just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.â â

Christ And The Gospel

Bible Secrets Revealed: Hidden Messages of the Holy Book (S1, E1) | Full Episode

A Christian approach to the study of Gods wisdom starts and ends with Christ. Paul, in opposing false wisdom, locates true wisdom in Gods plan that climaxes in Christ and the gospel. There is a tendency in certain streams of contemporary theology to reorient christology around some preconceived conception of wisdom. The New Testament, however, moves in the opposite direction: it is wisdom that is reconfigured around Christ. Authentic Christian wisdom is always constituted in relation to the person and work of Christ.

Initially these verses sound as though a person is instructed to do the right thing for the wrong reason, that is, to forgive so that oneâs enemy will receive a worse torment. Other scriptures, however, suggest a different interpretation: bringing someone to repentance and godly sorrow through sharpening conscience.

âThe burning of coals laid on the head must be a painful but wholesome consequence it is a figure of self-accusing repentance ⦠, the showing of good to an enemy. ⦠That God rewards such magnanimity may not be the special motive but this view might contribute to it, for otherwise such promises of God were without moral right. The proverb also requires one to show himself gentle and liberal toward a needy enemy, and present a twofold reason for this: first, that thereby his injustice is brought home to his conscience and, secondly, that thus God is well-pleased in such practical love toward an enemy, and will reward it âby such conduct, apart from the performance of a law grounded in our moral nature, one advances the happiness of his neighbour and his own.â
