Marriage isnât easy, so itâs important to keep some words of wisdom close at hand. Whether youâre looking for just the right wedding quote for a new coupleâs wedding card, or a special love quote for him in your next anniversary card, youâll be in good shape, because of plenty of people have opinions on the matter. Weâve also amassed 30 quotes from the Good Book that are all about marriage.

âSo they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.â

âBe completely humble and gentle be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.â

âAnd now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.â

âLove is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.â

Interracial Marriage: Is It A Sin What The Bible Says

When I was growing up, I would sometimes hear people in my family talk about interracial marriage, and whether different cultures colliding could work within marriage. I decided to do a little research about this topic to clear up some questions that I had and that others may have about this.

What does the Bible say about interracial marriage? There is nowhere in the Bible that forbids or discourages interracial marriage. Interracial marriage is not a sin in any way. Every human is created in Gods image , and we all come from the same ancestors, Adam and Eve.

So where did all of these questions about interracial marriage come from? I will be diving into further details about this topic, and what the other requirements for marriage that are given to Christians.

Five Marriages To Learn From

These five marriage examples from the Bible are those that didnt begin with romantic first meetings, nor did they have days filled with endless happiness and zero hardships. Each of these marriages either came with challenges, or the couple had to overcome obstacles together that turned their marriages from ordinary to extraordinary.

God Created Marriage In The Beginning

Does the Bible talk about common law marriage?

Its important to note that God initiated this very first marriage in Eden. Marriage comes from God. And His union of Adam and Eve illustrates Gods ideal for marriageone man and one woman joined together in a life-long commitment to each other, working together to form strong, godly families. Obviously, human beings havent always followed that ideal, but Gods way is still the best way.

Does The Bible Forbid Interracial Marriages

Absolutely not! Racist Christians used to argue against interracial marriage by quoting Old Testament passages that prohibited Jews from marrying non-Jews. This prohibition had nothing to do with race, however. In fact, there was no concept of different races until white Europeans invented it during the Colonial period, partly to justify their enslavement of other people groups. The Bible recognizes only one race the human race.

The prohibitions in the Old Testament were given because God didnt want his people influenced by pagan beliefs and practices. This is still a concern, which is why Paul warns Christians not to be bound together with non-believers . But this has nothing to do with race.

In fact, one could argue that interracial marriages manifest the Kingdom in a uniquely beautiful way. Follow me on this.

The origin of different people groups goes back to the Tower of Babel . God had to divide people by giving them different languages because, at this point in history, they were working together for evil purposes. But this judgment was always intended to be provisional. Throughout the Old Testament God looked forward to a time when all tribes and nations would come back together, united under his loving Lordship.

Since interracial marriages obviously reverse the division of Babel, they should, from a Kingdom point of view, not only be allowed. They should be encouraged.

Marriage involves spiritual, emotional, and physical closeness. In the Old Testament, we are taught, Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh . Married couples are meant to be unified in every possible way.

Sexual intimacy is an expression of love that brings happiness and unity into a marriage. It is also the power by which married couples can multiply, and replenish the earth . Intimacy is a blessing that can lead to the incomparable joy of children as part of the eternal family unit.

Reasons For Divorce In The Bible

The Bible has a provision for divorce, but does not recommend it in general. But there are specific circumstances where leaving your spouse is legally possible.

First, it is important to understand that marriage vows are not to be taken lightly. Ecclesiastes 5:5 says that it is better to not take a vow than to take one and not fulfil it.

Matthew 5:33-34 says if you make an oath to the Lord, you must never break it. Connecting this to marriage, Ephesians 5:31 says that once a man marries, he becomes one flesh with his wife.

However, if divorce is inevitable, it will be so under the following conditions

  • Divorce is allowed in case of abandonment

If both the husband and the wife believe in God, their marriage is sanctified and their children would be legitimate.

But if either of the spouses is a non-believer, he or she can walk out of the marriage and abandon their family. This does not apply to blood relations.

  • Divorce is allowed in the event of adultery

If either the husband or the wife has been unfaithful to the other, this can lead to a divorce.

Adultery is also a legal crime and involves cheating on your spouse by having an affair with someone else.

Also, according to the Bible, if a man divorces a woman then she also becomes an adulterer.

  • God is genuinely against divorce

As per the Bible, Marriage is Gods work, not mans. Therefore, only God has the right to decide whether spouses can walk out of their marriages.

Origin Of People Groups

Why Does The Bible Talk About Sex and Marriage Often?

In Genesis 11, we read of the rebellion at the tower of Babel which resulted in people being scattered over the earth. Because of this dispersion, and the resulting splitting of the gene pool, different cultures formed, with certain features becoming predominant within each group. Some of these became general characteristics of each particular people group.15

Note that the context of Genesis 11 makes it clear that the reason for Gods scattering the people over the earth was that they had united in rebellion against God. Some Christians point to this event in an attempt to provide a basis for their arguments against so-called inter-racial marriage. They believe that it is implied here that to keep the nations apart, God is declaring that people from different people groups cant marry. However, there is no such indication in this passage that what is called inter-racial marriage is condemned. Besides, there has been so much mixing of people groups over the years, that it would be impossible for every human being today to trace their lineage back to know for certain which group they are descended from.

Biblical Traits Of A Good Husband Or Wife

Proverbs 31 has been called a description of The Ideal Wife. And its true that the chapter, as written, focuses on the wife. But in reality the ideal qualities given in this chapter apply equally to a husband as well as to a wife.

So how does the Bible define a good wife ? Here is a list of characteristics based on Proverbs 31. Look up the verses and see for yourself how they are described. Can you find other qualities in this chapter that are not listed here?

  • Dependable
  • A positive outlook that brings out the best in ones spouse
  • Hardworking
  • Provides for the household
  • Compassionate and aware of others peoples needs
  • Is a credit to ones spouse in the community
  • Loved and respected by the children and by ones spouse
  • Has a good reputation outside the home

Common Law Marriage Is Not In The Bible

When Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4, he revealed something significant that we often miss in this passage. In verses 17-18, Jesus said to the woman:

“You have correctly said, âI have no husbandâ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband this you have said truly.”

The woman had been hiding the fact that the man she was living with was not her husband. According to the New Bible Commentary notes on this passage of Scripture, Common Law Marriage had no religious support in the Jewish faith. Living with a person in sexual union did not constitute a “husband and wife” relationship. Jesus made that plain here.

Therefore, position number one does not have a foundation in Scripture.

Romans 13:1-2 is one of several passages in Scripture that refers to the importance of believers honoring governmental authority in general:

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”

These verses give position number two stronger biblical support.

Disclaimer About What Does The Bible Say About Marriage

We are going to look at seven truths about what the Bible says about marriage. But before we dive into that we need to be on the same page. In this article we will be looking at marriage through a Biblical lens. If you are not a Christian then there will obviously be disagreement. Thats okay.

If you are not following Jesus, what the Bible says about marriage shouldnt be the primary question that should concern you. Instead you should wrestle through who Jesus is, what Jesus did, and what impact that holds for you. That comes first.

I say that because many Christians try to force a Christian ethic upon non-Christians. I dont want to do this in this article. I dont think thats right or what Jesus did. Figure out who Jesus is first. The rest will follow. More about that here:Following Jesus

Are There Examples Of Interracial Marriage In The Bible

Paul Washer talks about relationships and what a biblical marriage is ...

I would ask that anyone believing interracial marriage is wrong to look up Scriptures about Rahab and Salmon, Ruth and Boaz, and let us not forget that Gods book on marriage, Song of Solomon was potentially written about an interracial couple .

One of the most well-known examples of a diverse marriage in Scripture is Moses the Hebrew/Egyptian and Zipporah a Midianite.

Exodus 2:21-22 says, Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.

Someone might argue that these were people who made mistakes, but there is nowhere in the whole Bible where God condemns marrying from another people group unless it was about a greater issue of faith. Jesus Himself was a Jew who had Gentiles in His genealogy.

Quotes About Christian Marriage

A good marriage must have its foundation in Jesus Christ in order to experience lasting love peace and joy.

I have known many happy marriages, but never a compatible one. The whole aim of marriage is to fight through and survive the instant when incompatibility becomes unquestionable. G.K. Chesterton

A man who will lead you to God and not to sin, is always worth the wait.

If he doesnt fall on his knees in prayer he doesnt deserve to fall on one knee with a ring. A man without God is one I can live without.

Love is friendship set on fire.

Men, youll never be a good groom to your wife unless youre first a good bride to Jesus. Tim Keller

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times always with the same person.

Does God Require A Marriage License

Marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman concerning their continuing relationship. Consensual agreement should be involved before a license is granted. True, the Old Testament describes cases of arranged weddings, such as that of Rebekah and Isaac.

It does appear, however, that Rebekah did have the ability to say no but she did choose to go to Isaac as an act of faith . Notice that mutual consent was involved on both sides of the marriage at some level.

A primary requirement in making an acceptable marriage before God concerns consent when adults wed each other. Before the sexual union takes place , there has to be a covenant first. An important consequence of this view is that any religion or cultures ceremony is valid intrinsically in Gods sight, whether or not the couples are Christians at the time.

A marriage relationship using a private contract is not sinful based on Gods word. It should be witnessed by two or more parties so it is harder for the participants to deny that the wedding occurred . It appears that a state-granted marriage license was relatively uncommon until the late nineteenth century or early twentieth century, at least in the United States.

Clearly, God delegates to human authorities the power to bind a marriage or annul it when they are not violating His law .

No Place For Racism In Christianity

Heres the final answer â the Bible does not say interracial marriage is wrong, and those who suggest it have misinterpreted Scripture.

That being said, anyone who suggests interracial marriage is wrong needs to check their heart for any hold racism may have on it.

Racism is sinful and evil, down to the very core. It is ignorant, judgmental hatred, and it grieves Gods heart. No human deserves any suffering due to the color of their skin.

Racism and hatred are not of God. God is love, and racism is not.

We are all sons and daughters of the King and made in Gods image.

When it comes to Christian marriages, the priority is the couples shared faith in Jesus Christ.

As Got Questions explains, Faith in Christ, not skin color, is the biblical standard for choosing a spouse.
