Where Does The Bible Talk About Marriage

So Does The Bible Really Say Its Wrong

Marriage | What Does The Bible Say About Marriage?

Before you book a hotel room and call up your girlfriend with the good news, please keep reading! Yes, the Bible does say that all forms of sex outside of marriage are wrong. Heres how.

The early chapters of Genesis give a basic blueprint for marriage, and even though it never says Thou shall not have sex before marriage, it certainly suggests that sex outside of marriage flows against Gods design. Gods command to be fruitful and multiply is joyfully heeded by Adam and Eve after they are joined in marriage . The same goes for their descendants. Noah, Shem, Abram and others all have sex and therefore have children within the confines of a marriage covenant.

When they turn to other women, such as Abrahams sexual relations with Hagar , the act was not considered an affair. Hagar was more like a modern day surrogate mother who bears a child in the place of an infertile wife. Nevertheless, these acts dont appear to be sanctioned by God, even though they were widely accepted in Israels culture.

Throughout the Old Testament, its assumed that God designed sex for marriage. Deuteronomy condemns a soon to be wife who has had sex before marriage , and the love poetry contained in the Song of Songs delights in the joys of sex but reserves it for a husband and wife. Extra-marital sex is never looked upon with divine approval in the Old Testament, no matter how bright the love-flame burns.

Close Bond In Marriage

The Lord God said, It is not good that man should be alone I will make a helper comparable to him . After each of the six days of Creation week, God reviewed what He had made and saw that it was good. But there was one thing in Eden that very first week that was not good! All the animals God had created, came in pairsa male and a female. But there was no female for Adam! That is when God created Eve and performed the very first marriage .

God made men and women to complement each otherphysically, mentally, and socially. He built into our being a desire for the companionship of a husband or wife. Thats why the Bible says, He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord .

Is Kissing Good Before Marriage

Premarital Kissing neither proves nor enhances true love. But rather enhances physical attraction which is classified as lust when not married. Kissing is good for marriage, but when not married it hinders true communication between the couple. Young, single people should avoid mouth-to-mouth kissing at all costs.

Sex Is For Married Spouses

In many verses about sex in marriageincluding one of the ten commandmentsit is very clear that God does not approve of sex outside of marriage, and also he does not approve sex with partners to which the person is not married. But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul .

In Bible verses about marriage and sex, he goes on to describe the seriousness of this sin. And the man that committeth adultery with another mans wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbors wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death

. But if an adulterer is truly sorry and willing to repent, he will forgive. In John 8, he forgives a woman taken in adultery. Others questioned him, but as she was willing to seek Jesus, he knew she was sorry for the sin.

The Bible is a tremendous spiritual resource as we learn all we must do to follow Jesus Christs teachings. In the holy book, God even offers insight into different aspects of marriage, including sex.

As we study its scripture about sex in marriage, we can more fully apply its principles into our own lives.

What Else Does The Bible Say

Does the Bible talk about common law marriage?

For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

1 Timothy 1:9-10

These three references indicate that homosexual passions and acts are unnatural, shameful, contrary to sound doctrine and deny entrance to the Kingdom of God. This being so they cannot be the basis of a Christian marriage sanctioned by Gods Church. The Church exists to save people, not to bless the means of their damnation. No marriage can be sanctioned by the Church if the very basis of the marriage involves acts that put the couple outside of eternal salvation. No matter what our society may legislate, the law of God is clearthat a marriage is not a godly if it is a same sex union.

Love And Respect In Marriage

Husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. . . . Let each one of you . . . so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband . Without mutual love and respect on the part of husbands and wives, a marriage cannot last. Keep up the early attentions. Look for the positive qualities in your spouse, and nurture that respect and love that first drew you together.

Sex Is For Procreation

It was very clear to Adam and Eve what they should be doing after they got married. God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth . And they did, for Adam and Eve had children. And Adam knew Eve, his wife, and she conceived, and bare Cain .

Throughout the Bible, we see other married couples having children, and no doubt, God is pleased with them to bring children into the world. Sarah and Abraham want so badly to have a child, but for some reason, they must wait until their old age to conceive Isaac.

It was hard, but they are faithful and realize the importance of having children. This is how you will find stories about sex in the Bible.

God created sex as a way to bring life into this world, and the creating power men and women have nothing short of miraculous. Becoming parents help us learn and grow in ways that God wants us to learn and grow.

Sex in marriage also allows children to come to earth to experience life here. It is no wonder that sex is a powerful force in our bodies, for it is what helps continue the human race. This is how marriage and sex in the Bible are coupled.

Biblical Vs Worldy View Of Marriage

Lie 1: If youre not compatible, you may have married the wrong person.

Gods truth says that marriage is a covenant relationship. Once you choose to marry, its no longer up for debate as to whether your spouse is the right one. Marriage makes them the right one, for its a commitment before God. Its never to be based on shifting feelings, but a choice every day to love the spouse youve chosen to marry. In a world that often prefers to trade in for an updated version, this truth doesnt make sense. But according to Gods Word its very clear.

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Lie 2: If youre not happy, dont stay in an unhappy situation. You deserve more.

For many of us, marriage can tend to bring our selfishness out like nothing else. We want our way. We insist on our rights. We want our spouse to make us happy, and right now! In the midst of demands, well never be free to truly love and serve one another. Our focus will tend to be one-sided our side and what we want. Yet Gods goal for marriage was not just to make us happy. The truest picture of marriage is that it symbolizes the love of Christ for us. And His desire for us all is that we be made more into the image of Himself.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Lie 3: Marriage is a 50/50 relationship.

What Does The Bible Say Aboutmarriage

What Does the Bible Say About Marriage?

As a Christian Counselor, I get many questions regarding what Gods intends in marriage and when is divorce an option. Before, looking at divorce allowances in Scripture, lets examine Gods plan for a marriage.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

Only the Lord is perfect in all of the above. Our capacity to reflect Gods perfect character traits of love, justice, and compassion is tainted by sin.

Adams sin caused the image of God to be broken beyond our ability to repair. Sin, in the Christian sense, is not just doing something wrong, it is an attack against the Lord God who is the sustainer of life in the cosmos. It is only through a miracle of God that we can repair the damage brought on by sin entering the world in Genesis 3.

That miracle occurred when the God sent His only Son to repair the damage by bearing the penalty upon Himself. Therefore, God demonstrated mercy and justice to us at the same time on the cross. Ephesians 4:24 and Colossians 3:10 conveys the truth that being covered by the blood of the Jesus and putting on the new self-enables us to pursue true righteousness and holiness.

  • The couple is married in the eyes of God when the couple is legally married.
  • The couple is married in the eyes of God after they have participated in a formal religious wedding ceremony.

Have you ever noticed how couples who have been happily married for many years often seem to blend together on so many levels? They have so much history together that they almost feel like the other is an extension of themselves. Thats what the Bible is talking about when it says a husband and wife become one flesh.

God Instituted Marriage And Blessed It

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled . We have already seen that God performed the very first wedding at the end of Creation week and blessed the new couple . Marriage is something that God Himself instituted and blessed. This is important, because it tells us that marriage is a good thing. It is one of the blessings that God has given us from the very beginning.

The Bible puts it like this: From the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, . . . Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate .

What Does The Bible Say About Oral Sex

There are two veiled passages in the Bible that many theologians believe pertain to oral sex. The first is Song of Solomon 2:3: Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the young men. In his shade I took great delight and sat down, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. The word fruit refers to the male genitals and in biblical references. It is sometimes equated with the male genitals or with semen so, it is possible that this passage is a reference to an oral genital caress.

The second possible veiled reference is found in Song of Solomon 4:16: Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits. These erotic words spoken by Solomons bride are at the climax of a very sensuous love scene. It seems Shulamith asks her husband to blow on her garden and cause its spices to flow out. Of course, one cannot be certain, but it is possible Shulamith is inviting her husband to excite her by caressing her with his mouth. She then invites him to enter her and feast on the pleasures waiting in her garden.

What does the bible say about marriage? GET REAL 2

God made humans to be in relationship with others, and marriage is certainly the most significant relationship someone will be in, outside of ones relationship with God. The weight the Bible places on marriage serves as evidence to all married couples how serious they should take their vows and how wonderful the covenant of marriage can be when both husband and wife are fully committed to each other and to the Lord.

The Bibles Teaching On Marriage And Family

Incredible as it may seem, we can no longer assume that people in our culture understand what the proper definition of marriage and the family is. Not only is this a sad commentary on the impact of same-sex marriage activists on our society, it also shows how the cultures memory of the biblical tradition on which it is largely based is fading fast. What is marriage, biblically defined? And what is the biblical definition of a family?

In this brief treatise on marriage and the family, we will take up these questions and proceed to discuss a number of related matters, such as singleness, divorce and remarriage, and homosexuality, in an effort to develop a full-orbed understanding of the biblical teaching on the subject. As I have sought to demonstrate at some length in my book God, Marriage, and the Family: Rebuilding the Biblical Foundation, marriage and the family are institutions under siege today, and only a return to the biblical foundation of these God-given institutions will reverse the decline of marriage and the family in our culture today.
