Repentance According To The Bible

A major message of the Bible is a call to repent and change. This isnt popular, but its vitally necessary. What is repentance? Why does God require it?

According to the apostle Paul, God now commands all men everywhere to repent .

Repentance is not a popular subject in most of the religious community. Seldom is a modern-day religious audience exhorted to repent.

Yet Jesus cousin, John the Baptist, vigorously preached, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and told his audience to bear fruits worthy of repentance . Soon after Johns martyrdom, Jesus Christ continued the same theme by preaching, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand .

Within weeks following Jesus crucifixion, the New Testament Church was founded. Peters inspired words to an audience of thousands of devout Jews were, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit .

In verses 1215, David asks God to make him so joyful about his salvation that he cant help but proclaim the gospel to others: Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. This is important, because so often we do the oppositewe wallow in our sin and draw back from serving others because we think were unworthy. But the joy of forgiveness should compel us to share the good news with friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors.

Why Repenting Takes Place

Repentance happens to save us from sin. If we never repented we would always live in sins. So, by repenting, we rescue ourselves from condemnation.

Consequently, we cannot hear the Word of God to stop lying without a preacher.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? nd how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? nd how shall they hear without a preacher?

Romans 10:14

The Lord sent all His prophets and Jesus Christ and the latter sent his disciples.

Therefore, whenever we hear the Word of God repenting should be a the front of our minds. Accept it and repent!

The term repentance comes with all sorts of different ideas. By doing a simple search on the internet we find it summed up in words like remorse, contrition, contriteness, penitence, sorrow, regret. Most would agree that this is what is meant when we use repentance/repent in our day to day use of the word. Probably the religious association is there for most. What I am tryng to look at in this note is how the Bible uses what we see translated as the word repentance in the English Bible. Why? Because word studies are good, they allow us to focus on how the word was used in Scripture, possibly how it was used during that time period it was written and also because words change their meaning over time. Perhaps the word was never intended as we understand it today.

Regarding how words change their meaning over time, modern dictionaries continually update their word definitions based on contemporary usage of words as well as keeping the origin.

Many Bible scholars admit that the word METANOIA translated originally to Latin and later from the Latin translated into English as repentance in a unfortunate. Luther says this

in no way does this do justice to the Greek. (Luthers Works, 48:6768

True Repentance Leads To Action

To illustrate true repentance, Jesus used the story of one of the two sons who was asked by their father to work in their vineyard. At first, the lad refused but afterward, he changed his mind and went.

But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, Son, go, work today in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not, but afterward he regretted it and went .

Jesus taught that true repentance is not merely feeling sorry for something that has been done it has to be followed by actions.

The Meaning Of The Term

The principal mistake of many is basing their understanding of repentance on the root form of the Greek word. The Greek verb metanoe is built on the preposition meta and the verb noe . The conclusion some then draw is that the only sense in which a Christian is required to repent is to change ones mind or to rethink sin and ones relationship with God. But the meaning of words is not determined in this way, but rather on usage and context. A change of mind or perspective is of no value if it isnt accompanied by a change of direction, a change of life and action.

Genuine repentance begins, but by no means ends, with heartfelt conviction of sin. It begins with an unequivocal, heart-rending recognition of having defied God by embracing what he despises and hating, or at minimum, being indifferent towards, what he adores. Repentance, therefore, involves knowing in ones heart: This is wrong. I have sinned. God is grieved. The antithesis of recognition is rationalization, the selfish attempt to justify ones moral laxity by any number of appeals: Im a victim. If you knew what Ive been through and how badly people have treated me, youd grant me a little slack.

Why We Should Repent

Ones sincere pursuit and faithful embrace of repentance leads to the greatest blessing of all: forgiveness! Blessed is the man whose transgressions are forgiven . Davids sin is like an oppressive weight from which he longs to be relieved. Forgiveness lifts the burden from his shoulders. Blessed is he whose sin is covered . Its as if David says, Oh, dear Father, what joy to know that if I will uncover my sin and not hide it, you will! David doesnt mean to suggest that his sin is merely concealed from view but somehow still present to condemn and defeat him. The point is that God sees it no more. He has covered it from all view. Finally, blessed is that man or woman, young or old, whose sin the Lord does not impute or count against them . No record is kept. God isnt a spiritual scorekeeper to those who seek his pardoning favor.

Our reluctance to repent can often result in divine discipline. As David reflected on his sin and the season during which he kept silent, he portrays the impact of his transgression in physical terms:

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer .

Context For The Definition Of Repentance

You are an evangelist. As an evangelist, you tell people the Good News of the Gospel: that Jesus died and rose again so that our sins can be forgiven. The reason why this is good news is because our sins have separated us from God. If our sins are not dealt with, they form a barrier between us and God so that we cannot draw near Him.

But here is a question you may have asked yourself: What do you do if the person you are talking to comes to believe the Gospel? What if things actually go really, really well, and they say Wow, that makes so much sense. Thank you so much for sharing this with me?

Avoid Defensiveness And See God Rightly

Genuine Biblical Repentance

Davids sin hurt multiple people. He committed adultery, orchestrated a murder, and tried to cover it all up. And yet he says to God, against you, you only, have I sinned . How can that be? Sin is missing the markGods mark. Our sin does hurt others, and we must seek forgiveness from them, but all sin is ultimately against God.

Repentance According To The Scriptures: Acts : 3739

Repentance means being cut down by the laws declaration of judgment. Its not an activity we do to prepare for grace, but a point of despair worked by God himself.

Faith alone is one of the Reformations key slogans. Those descended from the Reformation may not agree on everything. But they all hold that God justifies the ungodly by faith alone apart from works of the law. Lutherans, Calvinists, and other Reformation Protestants can at least agree on this. Or at least theyre supposed to. Faith alone is much more than just a slogan it is the key doctrinal pillar of all who claim to be Protestant.

But in practice, faith alone is not always so simple a doctrine to maintain. The temptation to obscure the meaning of justification by faith is a persistent one. This is because faith alone threatens the whole possibility of contributing anything to our salvation. Sinners are convinced that there must be something left for us to do. Pleasing God has to depend on us in some way. This is the essence of what Gerhard Forde used to call the legal scheme. Sinners are captive to sins most deep-seated lie of all: that Gods law is a ladder we use to climb upwards into his presence and favor, instead of the hammer he uses to break all our self-righteous illusions.

False Repentance Is A Dangerous Error Because It Does Not Deliver From The Coming Wrath

The theme of 3:7-9 is clearly that of warning. John mentions the wrath to come, the axe already laid at the root of the trees, and that every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Furthermore, he anticipates the excuse that his Jewish audience would raise, that they were exempt from Gods judgment because they were children of Abraham. He shows them that it was not valid. His warning shows that there is such a thing as false or superficial repentance and that it will not deliver a person from the impending wrath of God. Therefore, we need to be sure that we can identify and avoid such deception.

    A. False repentance is outward, not inward.

Johns pointed question, Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? questions the motives of his listeners. Even though they may go through the outward ritual of water baptism, they needed to examine their hearts. Were they truly repentant toward God for their personal sins or were they just following the religious fad of the moment? The picture behind Johns language was that when there was a brush fire, or when a farmer would burn the stubble from his field, any snakes in the grass would escape ahead of the flames. But as soon as they were safe, they would resume their subtle, crooked, poisonous ways, because their nature as snakes had not been changed. They were just trying to save their skins so that they could go on with their snake-in-the-grass ways.

    1. Draw near to God and study His word. He says if you seek Him and His kingdom, He will give you what you need to live in a way that is pleasing to Him.

    2. Pray that God will grant you repentance a true transformational conviction. And ask Him for the faith to believe that His ways are better.

    3. Meditate on Gods goodness and mercy, not shame. Shame is sin and self-focused. It will keep you from true conviction.
