From the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other ancient fragments of the Bible, we have confidence that the Bible we hold in our hands today is the same Bible that has existed for centuries. The words we read are the same as the words that were given to the original writers. That in itself is astounding. We now have access to the Bible everywhere: in print, on our phones, on our computers, the Word of God continues to be meaningful and so very relevant.

The fact that the Bible itself continues to be such a strong influence in todays world is a testament to its timeless meaning and applications. The King James translators called it that inestimable treasure that excelleth all the riches of the earth. All these years later, this seems to be the most fitting description of what the Bible means.

Brief History Of The Rapture

The term ‘Rapture’ first became popular in the United States toward the end of the 19th century through teachings on premillennialism and dispensationalism by John Nelson Darby, an Irish evangelist. The rapture theory continued to grow in popularity among evangelicals largely due to a preacher named William Eugene Blackstone . His book, Jesus is Coming, sold more than one million copies.

In the late 1960’s and 1970’s, during the Jesus Movement, the Rapture theory made its way into many popular secular songs such as Are You Ready? by Pacific Gas & Electric and In The Year 2525 by Zager and Evans.

The Rapture theory gained even greater interest during this time due to the books of Hal Lindsey. In The Late Great Planet Earth Lindsey predicted an imminent Rapture based on global conditions at the time.

In 1972 Russell S. Doughten produced a four-part movie series beginning with A Thief in the Night. The film recorded the events surrounding the Rapture in a terrifying way, creating widespread public interest in the theory.

In 1991 the film The Rapture, with Mimi Rogers was released. It recorded one woman’s experience through the Rapture.

More recently, the popular Christian book series based on the events surrounding the Rapture is the Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.

The logos concept was a foundational idea for theological development from the start of the early church. If youve been in any of my classes, right in the beginning Ill give what I call a big hermeneutics lecture just to get you on board where I am. And then one of my little speeches, as I call it, is I say, Meaning is a circle, and Ill draw a big circle on the board. What do I mean by that? Well, as opposed to meaning as a dot. And Im trying to make the point that meaning is more than just one little thing. You have a paragraph, it means a lot of things, so think of the circle: theres things to the center of the meaning, but then theres things more peripheral in the circle. Book of Romans: original meaning to the people its written, but it also includes meaning to today, and so theres the center of the circle or more important aspects of meaning and then middle level and all the way to the periphery of the circle.

Now why do we think its biblical: just because its in the Westminster Confession of Faith? Ultimately no, its because that matches the Bible. Look at where the Bible will interpret itself. So were in the New Testament itll quote an old Testament passage. Sometimes it just quotes the center of the circle, and it uses the center of the circle. But other times it will use by implication or the good and necessary consequences.

How Did The Bible Get That Name

It is interesting that the Bible never refers to itself as “the Bible.” So when did people start calling these sacred writings by the word Bible? Again, the Bible is not really a book, but a collection of books. Yet, even the New Testament writers seemed to understand that the things being written about Jesus were to be considered part of Scripture.

In II Peter 3:16, Peter addressed the writings of Paul, He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures

So even then there was something unique about the words being written, that these were the words of God, and that the words of God were subject to being tampered with and manipulated. The collection of these writings, including the New Testament, were first called the Bible somewhere around the fourth century in the writings of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom first refers to the Old and New Testament together as ta biblia , the Latin form of biblos. It was also around this time that these collections of writings began to be put together in a certain order, and this collection of letters and writings started shaping into the one-volume book that we are familiar with today.

Other Meanings Of Law

We have seen that the Law can refer to the entire Old Testament or the just the Mosaic Law. But the Law has other meanings in the New Testament. In Romans 3:27 the expression law of faith refers to the fact that salvation or the forgiveness of our sins is only by faith. In Romans 7:23-24 we are introduced to another law which is the law of the mind which is our desire for obedience. This law seeks to controls our behavior but is in conflict with the law of sin which wages war against the law of the mind. The law of the Spirit of life in Romans 8:2 refers to the gospel.

For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2

The expression the law can also refer to the civil law of various nations. Daniel 6:8, 12 refers to the law of the Medes and Persians. In Acts 18:13 we are told that the proconsul of Achaia, Gallio, spoke of their own civil law regarding the worship of God. God has commanded us to obey the laws of our country .

Finally, the law of liberty in James 1:25 is both the Old and New Testaments.
