What Is The Meaning Of Peace In The Bible

What Other Scriptures Echo This Theme Of God

What is a biblical understanding of peace?

Jesus, Himself, offers similar words to His disciples in the Gospel of John, when He says, Peace I leave with you My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid .

This seems to be the same sort of peace Paul is referring to in Philippians a peace we humans cannot possibly understand, as it is unlike the world, but one that has the ability both to drive out fear and free us from our worries.

That same notion is reflected in Romans 8:28, where Paul reminds us, And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

God will work it all out, Paul is saying He will handle our problems and our terrors if we only believe and turn them over to Him.

In return, we receive a supernatural peace, unexplainable, and perhaps not even comprehensible, with the potential to calm us and enable us to experience joy.

In case we missed the point, Paul reflects more on this in his second letter to the early church in Corinth. He writes,

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God .

God Gives Us Peace In Trouble

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Phillippians 4:6-7

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart I have overcome the world.

John 16:33

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Isaiah 26:3

In Me You May Have Peace

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Jesus never promised that we wouldn’t experience trials and difficulties. On the contrary, He encourages us to look to Himthe One who has conquered the world. By faith, we put our hope in Jesus the overcomer, and it’s in that hope that we find peace.

What Did Jesus Said About Peace

John 20:21 says Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. That is the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

Wishing Peacefulness To Each Other

Despite all the craziness throughout the week, Shabbat Shalom is saying: may you end the week with a rest that brings that inner peace that recenters us on the One who gives it.

And also: May your next week begin with that sense of inner rest and completeness, where nothing is lacking.

At its very core, that is what Shabbat is about! While the modern understanding of peace is looking for a break from lifes turmoil, a biblical peace addresses our hearts. If this is the way we understand biblical peace, then suddenly many verses take on a whole new meaning.

What Is The Significance Of These 3 Verses In John 20

Before Jesus utters these words, you must understand what is happening to the disciples. The first two utterances happened on the day Jesus rose from the dead. Today, we have the benefit of looking back at history but for a moment, put yourself in Jerusalem on this day. Earlier that day, Peter and John went to the tomb in a panic because of what Mary Magdelene had told them. Im sure she had some hysteria in her voice. Here are her words:

So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we dont know where they have put him! –John 20:2

Upon hearing this, Peter and John raced to the tomb to see what she had told them. Here is what happened when they got there:

Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. Then the disciples went back to where they were staying. John 20:6-10

Can you picture Peter and John going back to the other disciples and telling them what they saw? There were already in a difficult emotional state and this must have exacerbated it. There had to be unrest, confusion, and uncertainty as to what had really happened.

The True Meaning Of Shabbat

What if one day a week, we focused on not just a day of rest but a day of getting our wholeness restored? What if weekly we could completely refill our life tank in our bodies, hearts and minds? That is what true shalom does, if we allow it.

When our peace is full and overflowing, we are able to trust Him to restore what may have been lost last week. We can confidently move forward in hope that we will have all that we need in the week ahead. This is what Shabbat is for. Shabbat is for Shalom. Shabbat Shalom.

Every Friday evening in Israel and Jewish communities around the world, youll hear the joyful Shabbat Shalom! Again, this is more than a greeting. Its intent is a hope to encourage others to enter the weekly time of restoration and of making things whole that was appointed by God.

Putting It All Together

How To Experience The Peace of God. #THEPEACEOFGOD

The peace of God is different from the peace of the world. Biblical peace is more than just the absence of conflict it is taking action to restore a broken situation. Its more than a state of inner tranquility its a state of wholeness and completeness.

Biblical peace is not something we can create on our own it is a fruit of the Spirit. God is the source of peace, and one of His names is Yahweh Shalom , which means the LORD Is Peace. Jesus is the prince of peace , and He gives us peace in three ways.

Peace In The Old Testament

Even though the word “peace” is seen throughout the Bible, it has several different meanings in the Old and New Testaments.

In the Old Testament, most of the time peace meant completeness, soundness, and well-being of the total person that came only from God.

  • Peace was the time when there was no war .
  • Peace was for those who followed God’s laws .
  • Peace also meant safety and security .
  • Peace meant contentment when minds were stayed on God .
  • Peace was the result of prosperity .

Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Gods Peace = Unending Peace

You and I will eventually have someone who will let us down in one way or another. Its a given because we are human and flawed this side of eternity.

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all. 2 Thessalonians 3:16

Another mentioned when we finally see Jesus face to face they envision seeing a brightness brighter than the sun.

May The Lord Fill You With Joy And Peace

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

As Paul prepares to wrap up his Epistle to the church at Rome, he wishes the church joy and peace. In keeping with the rest of the New Testament’s teachings on peace, Paul links these virtues with ones ability to trust in Jesus. As we trust in Him, we experience joy and peace.

The Fruit Of The Holy Spirit: What Is Peace

Peace Definition Bible Verse SVG SVG & Font Market

Galatians 5:22-23 tells us, The Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. You may have heard about the fruit of the Spirit and wondered what it is and how it relates to our Christian faith.

In this series, each fruit will be explored and related to our everyday lives. Just like physical fruit needs time to grow, the fruit of the Spirit will not ripen in our lives overnight. As we mature in our faith, all the characteristics of our spiritual fruits will grow as well.

The third fruit of the Spirit is peace. The word peace appears nearly 429 times in the Bible, which helps us understand why the phrase Peace be with you is so important in the faith community.

One of the strongest human desires is for peace, whether it be peace between nations, peace between neighbors or even peace within our own minds. Peace is listed in the top three characteristics of the fruit of the spirit. Without love, joy and peace, the rest of the fruits are not possible. God has also called us as Christians to be peacemakers.

Over the last several months, we have experienced unprecedented global anxiety. People are stressed about finances, children, work, relationships, sicknessthe list goes on. Its difficult to find peace during these circumstances.

The Meek Will Enjoy Peace And Prosperity

A little while, and the wicked will be no more though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Jesus alludes to Psalm 37 in the Sermon on the Mount when He tells His listeners that the meek will inherit the earth. These words from Psalm 37 help drive home the fact that peace isn’t something you take by force. On the contrary, it’s a byproduct of living a certain kind of life. In the world’s eyes, the idea that the meek will be the ultimate winners seems preposterousbut not in God’s economy.

A Prayer That Peace Truly Be With You

Lord Jesus,

You promised before you left us that you would give us peace. Help me today to walk in the peace that you promised. Let your peace override any of my fears, anxieties, or worries and help me to walk in the stillness and comfort of the rest that comes from your peace. I thank you today for your great peace and I face today knowing that you are with me and so is your peace.

Don’t Miss: What Does The Bible Say About Feeling Lonely

No Peace For The Wicked

“There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Theres no rest for the wicked.” Isaiah’s words are the origin of that idiom. Unlike the righteous who experience peace, the wicked are in constant turmoil. They’re always looking over their shoulder for enemies and worry about maintaining their deceptions. The lives of the wise don’t require a lot of concern about what lies they’ve told or what enemies they’ve made, and that’s why they enjoy peace.

Bible Verses About Peace In Hard Times

What the Bible Says About How to Find Peace of Mind

We will never escape hard times. Whether you are struggling financially, have lost a loved one, or are in the throngs of a bad relationship, your heart will be troubled, and seeking out the true source of peace is your only way to come out ahead. Maybe come out ahead is a poor expression to use here, but do you ever feel as if you are losing days living in a bad state of mind? We want more than survival mode!

During times of trials, it brings me great comfort to be reminded that God is in control and He has promised to never leave me.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

And my favorite:

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Definition Of Shalom In Hebrew

The root word of Shalom is shalam. One of the first uses of the word shalam in the Torah is in Exodus 21 and 22. In these 2 chapters, it is used 14 times.

Moses is giving instructions to the people about what to do when someone causes material loss or in the case of theft of property. When that loss or injury occurs, the owner is considered lacking or not complete. The one responsible was to make things right.

In the translation of Exodus 21-22, shalam is translated as make it good, shall surely pay, make full restitution or to restore. The ancient Hebrew meaning of shalam was to make something whole. Not just regarding practical restoration of things that were lost or stolen. But with an overall sense of fulness and completeness in mind, body and estate.

Let Christ’s Peace Rule In Your Hearts

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

God grows the fruits of the Spirit inside of us, but that doesn’t mean that we play no part. Here Paul talks about how we avail ourselves of these critical traits. We put them on like clothing. We exercise them in how we treat one another. But when he gets to peace, he uses the verb “let.” If we want the peace of Christ to reign in our life, we just need to let it. We need to get out of the way.
