Traditionally Qoheleth has been identified as Solomon because of the information given in the first two verses of the book. It is argued that no one else was son of David, king in Jerusalem. Yet it must be admitted that the designation son of David could be used to refer to anyone in the line of David.

It is also puzzling why Solomon would hide behind a pseudonym. The Solomonic flavor of sections like 2:111 leave no doubt that the author intended for the reader to think of Solomons experiences.

Clearly, this book comes from Israel, and not from ancient Greece.

It may not matter who wrote the book, or when. The book has the same meaning whoever wrote it. But it is very wrong to imagine that the books ideas come from the ideas of ancient Greece.

Next, we must think about the authors purpose. There was a very clear reason why he wrote the book. It was that he wanted to teach people about the importance of wisdom. He wanted them to study how they could become wise.

For the author, that meant the same as to have a right relationship with God . If people have a right relationship with God, then God considers them wise. But even the most intelligent person is foolish if he does not have a right relationship with God. And Gods law teaches people how to have a right relationship with him .

That is not, of course, an unusual message for the Bible. We expect the Bible to teach such things. But what is unusual is the authors method.

Unlike a prophet , the author does not declare that God has spoken to him. And the author does not include reports of wonderful things that God has done in this world.

Instead, the author does something that is quite extraordinary. He describes the true state of peoples lives in this world. He shows how weak people really are. He emphasises certain facts that people usually deny. And he uses these things to prove that people must trust God. By careful study of peoples lives, the author shows that people really do need God to save them.

When Was Ecclesiastes Written

Some have dated the book in the third or fourth century BC, claiming that the Hebrew of the book has characteristics of post-biblical Hebrew and that there is discernible influence from Greek philosophy. This view, while popular among some scholars, must treat the book as a royal fiction, a genre well known in both Mesopotamia and Egypt. The presence of a few Persian loanwords and the identification of some Aramaic influence have been used to bolster this position.

More common among conservative interpreters is the view that the distinctive Hebrew is dialectical and therefore cant give much help in dating the book. Those who dont date the book to the time of Solomon have been most inclined to place it sometime in the eighth or seventh centuries BC, but one cannot really be more precise.
