Changing Generic Third Person Masculine Forms

The final major complaint that the TNIV’s critics make involves the frequent use of a third person plural pronoun to refer back to a singular antecedent and thus avoid a singular masculine pronoun , when the antecedent is clearly generic, referring to men and women alike. Or, less commonly, a second person form is substituted. There are four main objections to these substitutions that have been put forward. For those raised on an older form of standard English, the sentences sound stylistically poor. Some of us can remember high school or college English teachers decades ago marking us down for writing such prose! The translation that results is not as literal as it could have been with a generic singular masculine pronoun. A third person plural destroys the individual implications of the singular. Thus, rendering Rev. 3:20, “If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me,” could mislead readers into thinking that Christ’s promise was true only for the church corporately and not for each individual person. The “masculinity” of God’s words are muted, to borrow again the subtitle of Poythress’ and Grudem’s book, since male headship is being taught by the use of a generic masculine form in the biblical languages when representing men and women together.

There are many different versions of bible available for someone who is a follower of the faith, but not all of these versions are equal in all respects. This is because different versions are a result of works of different groups of scholars who have different approaches towards important concepts of Christianity and the Jesus himself. Three of the most popular versions of the bible are KJV, NIV, and TNIV. This article aims to compare these versions to enable readers of their differences.

This is the version of the holy bible that is considered the Authorized Version or the King James Version in the country. The translation of the bible in English began in 1604 and continued till 1611. This was the third official translation of the bible that was initiated because of the problems perceived by scholars that belonged to the Protestant groups within the Christian Church in the earlier two translations.

NIV stands for the New International Version, and it happens to be a translation of the holy bible. The publisher of this version of the bible is Biblica that grants the rights to separate firms in US and UK. This version of the bible was introduced in 1970, and it got updated two years ago. The job for NIV was handed over to the New York Bible Society in 1965. This society that is now known as Biblica translated the bible and released it in 1973.

There are enough good Bible translations out there to fit most peoples needs, but I cannot personally recommend the TNIV because there are just too many issues with it, and why would we need another translation when we have perhaps the best already available in the ESV, the NASB, and the New King James Version? When we try to modernize the language into our times, we can edit, omit, or mistranslate words, and any time we mess with the original manuscripts to make it more readable, we are tinkering with the very breath of God because all Scripture is inspired by God . Different translations are not inspired by God. Thats an important difference to note. Not all Bible translations are equal. Many are plainly heretical . Thats why its essential to study and read about each Bible before you buy it. Read the reviews and what scholars, pastors, and teachers are saying about it before you buy it.

Gender Language And The Tniv

Among other differences from the NIV, the TNIV uses gender-neutral language to refer to people. Confessional terms for this kind of language are such as gender-inclusive. Two examples of this kind of translation decision are found in Genesis and Matthew:

Genesis 1:27 reads, “So God created human beings in his own image.” Older translations use the word “man” to translate the word employed in the Hebrew language, the same word used as the proper name of the first man married to the first woman, Eve.

Matthew 5:9 reads: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Here, the Greek word huioi is translated “children” rather than “sons” as found in other modern English translations such as the Revised Standard Version,New American Standard Bible,New King James Version, and the Amplified Bible.

However, the 1611 Authorized King James Version also renders this passage as “children” rather than “sons.” Masculine references to God, such as “Father” and “Son,” are not modified from the literal translation in the TNIV.

Less than 30% of the changes in the TNIV involve the use of inclusive language.The TNIV’s approach to gender inclusive language is similar to the New International Version Inclusive Language Edition,New Revised Standard Version, the New Living Translation, the New Century Version, and the Contemporary English Version.

The Famous Gender Role Passages

This is then the logical place to comment on the passages in the New Testament epistles that most directly bear on the question of male headship in the family and in the church. When one reads the polemic unleashed against the TNIV by its harshest critics, one imagines that feminist concerns must surely have done substantial violence to the texts that most directly challenge an egalitarian position. In fact, these texts have barely been altered at all in the TNIV.

1 Cor. 11:216. Most of this passage remains unchanged. The only change in the text itself that bears on gender-roles issues actually reflects a less “feminist” reading than in the NIV. The gratuitous “sign of ” before “authority” in v. 10 has been relegated to a footnote, so that this verse now reads “the woman ought to have authority over her own head,” an expression I have argued means “control over” and thus implies proper submission to authority.50 The translation of kephale as “head” throughout the passage remains unchanged. The long footnote to an alternate translation of vv. 47, in which the head covering in question is simply “hair,” has been dropped. While I follow a minority that think this may have been the correct interpretation, it is true that it was not as obvious a translation. A new footnote to v. 3 has been added, correctly pointing out that “man” and “woman” could also be translated “husband” and “wife.” That is the full extent of revisions bearing on gender roles.

Today’s New International Version

Today’s New International Version is an English translation of the Bible which was developed by the Committee on Bible Translation . The CBT also developed the New International Version in the 1970s. The TNIV is based on the NIV. It is explicitly Protestant like its predecessor the deuterocanonical books are not part of this translation. The TNIV New Testament was published in March 2002. The complete Bible was published in February 2005. The rights to the text are owned by Biblica . Zondervan published the TNIV in North America. Hodder & Stoughton published the TNIV in the UK and European Union.

A team of 13 translators worked on the translation, with forty additional scholars reviewing the translation work. The team was designed to be cross-denominational.

In 2011, both the 1984 edition of the NIV and the TNIV were discontinued, following the release of a revised and updated version of the NIV.

On Jan 28, 2002 the International Bible Society announced the publication of this third gender-neutral revision of the New International Version, and distributed advance review copies of the New Testament at the Christian Booksellers Association annual convention. The New Testament was published in the Spring of 2002, and the complete Bible in February of 2005.

The International Bible Society previously published a gender-neutral revision of the NIV in Great Britain , and also a gender-neutral childrens Bible in America , but when its plans for replacing the current NIV in America with the inclusive language revision became known in 1997, strong opposition arose among evangelical leaders. The pressure to abandon their planned revision was such that four of the men who were responsible for it went so far as to sign a document positively stating that they had dropped all intention of producing or publishing any such version. On the same day the International Bible Society also issued a statement in which it promised that it would continue to publish the NIV unchanged. But soon afterwards the IBS apparently re-evaluated the situation, and proceeded with the revision as if its officers had never signed the Colorado Springs Guidelines. And so we have Todays New International Version.

Faithful To The Original

Unfortunately, the TNIV makes significant changes in the gender language that is in the NIV, and like the NIV, the TNIV may vying for a place as the churchs commonly accepted Bible, however, I believe that any commonly accepted Bible of the church should be more faithful to the language of the original. Dont you? Again, in the Gospel of John, the word Jews is often mistranslated Jewish leaders, but that may not always be the case. Jews sometimes means, Jews, and not Jewish leaders, so thats why I recommend the ESV or the NASB, and even the New King James Version. The King James Version is beautiful and has such poetic language, but its not the best translation either because the world servant is mistranslated dozens of times as it should be correctly translated as slave. This occurs in dozens of places in the New Testament, so even the old reliable King James Version is not without problems however it is not a heretical Bible. Most translation problems or issues disappear when using the ESV, the NASB, or the New King James Version, and remember, we want our Bibles to be as close to the original Greek, Hebrew, and bit of Aramaic as we can. This ensures that we get the message in the proper context by sticking as close as possible to the original manuscripts.

When I showed my truly wonderful, open-minded boss my new TNIV without verse numbers and chapter numbers, he said, Hmm. This is not a step forward.

I said, I think it is. I explained how with my new Bible you dont have verse numbers and chapter numbers determining where your mind will place breaks. Youre free to read the Bible in the way most conducive to understanding for a modern Westerner.

Admittedly, the paragraphing and section spacing in my new numberless Bible were placed there by fallible men just like the verse numbers were.

And Paul and Moses didnt really use paragraphing.

But by communicating paragraphs typographically were at least making it possible for visual stops to coincide consistently with thought-flow rather than guaranteeing that they wont.

How The Csg Unwittingly Impugn Scripture

The most serious problem with the strictures of the CSG, however, have yet to be discussed. I do not know if any of its framers, or any of the signatories condemning the TNIV, are even aware of the phenomena I am about to discuss, hence my use of the word “unwitting” in this subtitle, because I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Poythress and Grudem, of course, are aware of some of them, because Carson and Strauss pointed a few out in their writings, to which Poythress and Grudem then responded. But that context was one of discussing the fact that in New Testament quotations of the Old, generic masculine singulars were at times rendered by the third person plural, and singular forms of “man” or “son” were rendered by singular or plural forms such as “men,” “child,” “children,” and even “sons and daughters” .70 Moreover, the New Testament also changes second person forms to third persons , and third person forms to first persons .71 These practices should cause one to think very hard before ever criticizing modern translators from doing what the inspired authors did. Yet at the same time, Poythress and Grudem correctly observe that the New Testament many times goes beyond mere translation to interpretation and application in its “quotations” of the Old Testament.72 So perhaps these examples are not as conclusive as they might at first appear.
