Old Testament: The Single Author Theory
The Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible, narrates the history of the people of Israel over about a millennium, beginning with Gods creation of the world and humankind, and contains the stories, laws and moral lessons that form the basis of religious life for both Jews and Christians. For at least 1,000 years, both Jewish and Christian tradition held that a single author wrote the first five books of the BibleGenesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomywhich together are known as the Torah and the Pentateuch . That single author was believed to be Moses, the Hebrew prophet who led the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt and guided them across the Red Sea toward the Promised Land.
Yet nearly from the beginning, readers of the Bible observed that there were things in the so-called Five Books of Moses that Moses himself could not possibly have witnessed: His own death, for example, occurs near the end of Deuteronomy. A volume of the Talmud, the collection of Jewish laws recorded between the 3rd and 5th centuries A.D., dealt with this inconsistency by explaining that Joshua likely wrote the verses about Moses death.

This was one of the first questions I had too. I had begun to experience the joy and benefits of copying Scripture for myself, and wondered if such an obviously big undertaking was even feasible. So I did some reading of history, and some calculations, and figured out the time commitment to copy the Bible by hand
Let me answer the question, and then explain in detail. How Long Would it Take to Copy the Bible by Hand? A simple mathematical calculation shows that it is theoretically possible to finish the task in 100 days. That is providing you could work at the task full time. Historically, monastic scribes took longer than that. If your interest is in making your own copy of the Bible in your spare time, there are a number of realistic plans that you can consider.

Biblical Grammar Is Weird
Part of my day job is as an editor. Plus, I graduated college with degrees in journalism and English. Words are kind of my thing. As such, some of the strange phrasing and sentence structure of the Bible has begun to stick out to me.
For instance, there are a lot of run-on sentences in the Bible. This probably has something to do with the text being over two millennia old and translated from a few different ancient languages. My proverbial hat is off to the modern day translators?but the sentences are still a little long winded.
Part of the issue is also probably that I?m used to writing short, to-the-point blog posts. While the Bible is a lengthy religious text written in a time before public education. It?s a different kind of writing than a modern audience is accustomed to.
So I?m probably reading too much into it. But I now better understand Eugene Peterson?s motivation for updating something phrasing with his Message translation.
When Was The New Testament Written
Since the New Testament books of the Bible are younger than the Old Testament collection, we naturally have more understanding about how the New Testament was written. The astounding feature of this knowledge actually helps us to understand how the Old Testament was collected and compiled. There is little difference in method. The books of the New Testament were recognized in time as the divine Word of God moving through His Apostles and disciples. From A.D. 33 until approximately A.D. 80, the Holy Spirit breathed out His Word in twenty-seven books and nine authors. Among the authors used by God were those who actually walked with Jesus and had seen Jesus in His post-resurrection form . The New Testament may be simply divided into Gospels and Epistles. Paul wrote most of the Epistles. These letters to churches were primarily concerned with clarifying doctrinal truths about Jesus and the way to be saved and ethical goals for the life of believers in the Church. Misunderstanding, contextualization problems, persecution, and false teachers became the forces that caused the writings and led to clarity, faithfulness, and further revelation about the mission of God in the world through Jesus Christ.

The Old Testament canon entered into Christian use in the Greek Septuagint translations and original books, and their differing lists of texts. In addition to the Septuagint, Christianity subsequently added various writings that would become the New Testament. Somewhat different lists of accepted works continued to develop in antiquity. In the 4th century a series of synods produced a list of texts equal to the 39, 46, 51, or 54-book canon of the Old Testament and to the 27-book canon of the New Testament that would be subsequently used to today, most notably the Synod of Hippo in 393 CE. Also c. 400, Jerome produced a definitive Latin edition of the Bible , the canon of which, at the insistence of the Pope, was in accord with the earlier Synods. With the benefit of hindsight, it can be said that this process effectively set the New Testament canon, although there are examples of other canonical lists in use after this time.
The New Testament writers assumed the inspiration of the Old Testament, probably earliest stated in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God”.
Some denominations have additional canonical holy scriptures beyond the Bible, including the standard works of the Latter Day Saints movement and Divine Principle in the Unification Church.

How long did it take to collect all of the writings that eventually formed the first version of the Bible? In other words, starting with when the first writing was created to when it was first printed/published/etc., how long did it take?

The Time Makes You Think
When reading the Bible, it?s easier to glaze over certain words or phrases. I read fairly quickly and have certainly missed the finer points while reading through scripture. That?s less of a concern while copying every word down by hand. I don?t miss nearly as much.
In fact, I?ve started having the opposite issue. Writing the Bible by hand has caused me to focus more on the individual words and sentences, rather than understanding the overall message of each book. I?ve started to lose the forest for the trees.

Just as the Old Testament chronicles the story of the Israelites in the millennium or so leading up to the birth of Jesus Christ, the New Testament records Jesuss life, from his birth and teachings to his death and later resurrection, a narrative that forms the fundamental basis of Christianity. In fact, it seems clear that the stories that form the basis of Christianity were first communicated orally, and passed down from generation to generation, before they were collected and written down.

Who Was King David
The first wave of scribes may, its been suggested, have started work during the reign of King David . Whether thats true or not, David is a monumental figure in the biblical story the slayer of Goliath, the conqueror of Jerusalem. David is also a hugely important figure in the quest to establish links between the Bible and historical fact, for he appears to be the earliest biblical figure to be confirmed by archaeology.
I killed king of the house of David. So boasts the Tel Dan Stele, an inscribed stone dating from 870750 BC and discovered in northern Israel in the 1990s. Like the Merneptah Stele before it, it documents a warlords victory over the Israelites . But it at least indicates that David was a historical figure.
The Tel Dan Stele also suggests that,no matter how capable their rulers, the people of Israel continued to be menaced by powerful, belligerent neighbours. And, in 586 BC, one of those neighbours, the Babylonians, would inflict on the Jews one of the most devastating defeats in their history: ransacking the sacred city of Jerusalem, butchering its residents, and dragging many more back to Babylonia.
