Reminder That Our Time Is Short

WHAT IS SIN? (According to the Bible) || & How to Overcome Temptation!
James 4:14

whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

John 9:4

I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day the night is coming when no one can work.

2 Corinthians 6:2

Behold, now is the accepted time behold, now is the day of salvation.

Ephesians 5:15-16

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Romans 13:11-14

And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Bible Verses About Struggling With Sin

Many believers ask, if I struggle with sin am I saved? Youre no Christian. You just sinned that same sin. You dont care about God. Youre a hypocrite if you ask for forgiveness. These are the lies that we hear from Satan. I struggle with sin. Even during worship sometimes I can find myself falling so short of Gods glory. If we are honest with ourselves we all struggle with sin. We are all weak. We struggle with sinful thoughts, desires, and habits. I want to touch up on something.

There are some self-righteous false teachers like Kerrigan Skelly who say that a Christian never struggles with sin. There are also some people who say that they struggle as an excuse to live in sin.

People like this dive head first into sin and dont desire to stop their sins. They use Gods grace as an excuse to deliberately rebel. For believers we often have remorse over our struggles.

A Christian desires to stop, but even though if we hate our sin and try our hardest we often fall short because of our unredeemed flesh. If you are a Christian who struggles, dont worry you are not alone. The answer to victory over all sin is by trusting in Jesus Christ.

There is hope for us in Christ. There will be times where God will convict us of sin, but we are to always allow our joy to come from Christ and not our performance. When your joy comes from your performance that will lead to always feeling condemned. Dont give up on your battle with sin. Keep on fighting and confessing.

To Overcome Worry We Must Focus On Eternal Matters Instead Of Temporary Ones

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isnt there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing?

Matthew 6:25

Therefore points back to verses 19-24, where Christ calls the disciples to store up treasures in heaven instead of on the earth. Then he describes how wealth can spiritually blind and master us. Essentially, Christ calls believers to focus on eternal matterslike riches in heaveninstead of focusing on temporary matters like wealth or our basic needs. In verse 25, he says, Isnt there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing?

When believers live only for food, clothes, etc., they debase themselves to being like animals. Life becomes all about serving our physical body. Really that is what most advertising is about: Eat this! Wear this! Watch this! It is all about making the body attractive, pleasant smelling, comfortable, and entertained. Christ later says the pagans worry about these things . Their primary concerns are temporal mattersnot eternal onesand they live in a constant rat race to fulfill those desires. However, believers are citizens, not only of this earth, but of heaven. Therefore, we must be primarily concerned about the affairs of heaven, even as we abide on the earth. Christ emphasizes this in Matthew 6:33 when he says seek first Gods kingdom and his righteousness.

Grace To Help In Time Of Need

Jesus knows what it is like to be human. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15. Before He left the earth, Jesus promised His disciples that He would send them the Holy Spirit, the Helper, who would guide them to the truth.

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16. The time of need is when I am tempted, when I see and feel the sin in my flesh, when I am struggling to keep myself pure and not to sin. If I pray for help as Jesus did, with humility and loud cries and tears, desperate to gain the victory and be saved from death, then I will get help.

The Holy Spirit will come and show me the way to go. And the way is always: Suffer in the flesh, like Jesus did! If I am humble and willing to obey, He will give me the strength and resolve I need to endure in my battle. He will give me light and understanding to see how heinous sin is, and how great my heavenly calling is. He will give Me Gods Word as a guide, help and a weapon. He will empower me to overcome sin!

To Conquer Habitual Sins We Must Be Careful Of Fear

Abraham replied, I said to myself, There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.

While talking to Abimelech, Abraham shares the thought process that led him to lie: I said to myself, There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife. The implication is that Gerar was a very ungodly place, and therefore, Abraham became afraid. He thought they would take his wife and so he lied about their relationship. Yes, they were really brother and sister, as they had the same father. The intent, though, was to deceive.

This is a common doorway to sin. In fact, fear is both a result of sin and a catalyst to sin. If you remember, after the fall, a new word entered Adams vocabulary, afraid. After he sinned, he started to experience fear. Genesis 3:910 says: But the LORD God called to the man, Where are you? He answered, I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked so I hid. When Adam heard God in the garden, fear made him hide from God. Fear began because of sin, and it also provoked further sin.

In the same way, fear still draws us into sin. We are afraid of what people think of us. We are afraid of failure. We are afraid God doesnt love us or that others dont love us, and this fear commonly leads us to sin.

Reminder Of Why God Has Given Us A Body

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are Gods.

Romans 12:1-2

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Hebrews 10:5-7

Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,But a body You have prepared for Me Then I said, Behold, I have come In the volume of the book it is written of Me To do Your will, O God.

This was Jesus attitude and His work when He was on earth. We have also received a body from God, and by carrying out His will on earth, we are proving that Gods will is good and acceptable and perfect, so that in the ages to come, it is incontestable.

To Conquer Habitual Sins We Must Recognize Gods Graciousness

But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken she is a married woman. Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? Did he not say to me, She is my sister, and didn’t she also say, He is my brother? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands. Then God said to him in the dream, Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all yours will die.

After Abimelech took Sarah as his wife, God appeared to him in a dream. In the dream, God told Abimelech that he and his people would die because he took Abrahams wife. In addition, God closed the wombs of all the women in Abimelechs house .

Abimelech, immediately, began to rationalize with God: Will you kill an innocent nation? Did not Abraham tell me that she was his sister? God agreed and said that it was because of his innocence that the Lord kept him from touching Sarah. God shared that Abraham was a prophet and commanded him to return Sarah. After doing this, Abraham would pray for them and God would heal his nation.

Gods grace draws us to repentance. In order to conquer habitual sins, we must recognize Gods amazing grace towards us.

Staying Faithful In The Face Of Temptation

Overcome sin // Bible Words Explained (Bible animation)
  • 1Accept that temptation is inevitable. Know that, no matter how hard you strive, it’s impossible to live a life without temptations. We will always, at certain points, feel a temptation to sin – whether it’s as innocuous as the urge to lie about our reason for being late to a meeting or as serious as the urge to strike someone who’s insulted you. It’s also inevitable that we will give in to this urge at some point. However, it’s possible, through our efforts, to reduce the hold that temptation has over us. The fight against temptation is like waging a lifelong war – be prepared to celebrate your victories and to learn from your defeats.
  • 2Don’t be discouraged by your own imperfection. Never fall prey to self-hate. You are not loathsome or pathetic because you feel temptation. God always forgives. Don’t get caught up in punishing yourself, even if you find yourself falling prey to temptation again and again.XResearch source Use your time more intelligently by sincerely asking for God’s forgiveness and working to move past your sins.

To Conquer Habitual Sins We Must Live By Faith

Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar, and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, She is my sister. Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.

Another thing we must discern from the narrative is Abrahams lack of trust in God. God told Abraham that his wife was going to bear him a child and that from his seed all nations would be blessed . God also told him that those who blessed him, God would bless and those who cursed him, God would curse . In Genesis 13, God cursed Pharaohs household to protect Abraham and Sarah. In Genesis 14, God conquered several armies to protect him. After that, in Genesis 15:1, God told Abraham that he was his shieldGod promised to protect him.

However, Abraham decided to protect himself by lying about his wife. He didnt trust God. Abrahams sin was rooted in a lack of faith and so is ours. In our faithlessness, we might say, God I am lonely, and I dont trust that you will provide someone good for me. Therefore, we run off to satisfy our lonelinessnot wanting to wait on God. Or, God you dont care about me, so we rebel against God and his goodness. Or, God I have to fight for myself because you are not protecting me. Therefore, we get angry and fight against those harming us, instead of believing Gods Word, Vengeance is mine I will repay saith the Lord . All sin is rooted in a lack of faith and a trust in self.

Scripture is a powerful weapon in the fight to overcome temptation. Hebrews 4:12 says, For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. But the Bible is more than a sword. Psalm 119:105 calls it a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.

Temptation is spiritual warfare, and the Bible makes it plain that God has equipped us for battle. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 teaches, The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

There are Bible verses to teach you to resist any kind of sin. Ephesians 6:13 tells us, Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

    We Must Want To Overcome

This sounds simple. However, too many people fail to change because they really dont want to expend the time and effort necessary to make the changes they need to make. We will tell ourselves, I want to overcome this problem. But then we will not do what is necessary to overcome.

Most of us realize that we will always find time to do the things we really want to do. If there is something we really want to do, we generally dont let anything stand in the way of our doing it.

However, it is also natural to keep putting off those things we really dont want to do.

So why dont we overcome those harmful habits, wrong words and evil thoughts that so easily beset us? We must ask ourselves, Do I really want to overcome them? How much effort and planning have we put into making the changes we need to make?

Changing old habitsways of doing things, ways of thinking and speakingis not easy. Sometimes such changes are literally painful . And changing any old habit of thought, word or deed is not easy because the change takes us out of our comfort zone. Old ways of doing things are comfortable. We follow those ways automatically. To change will require constant alertness, effort and a willingness to face the discomfort of change.

Therefore, the first step is to determine that we really want to change badly enough to expend the needed time, effort and planning. We will never follow the rest of these steps unless we really want to change.
