Context Of Matthew 1: 28

Gospel of Matthew | I Will Give You Rest || Bible Study series

Jesus spoke the words recorded at Matthew 11:28-30 while he was on a preaching campaign in Galilee in the year 31 C.E. The apostle Matthew was the only Gospel writer who recorded Jesus kindly invitation. As a former tax collector and a Jew himself, Matthew knew firsthand how the common people were oppressed, not only by Roman taxation but also by the corrupt Jewish religious system. So he was no doubt encouraged when he saw Jesus use the authority given him by his Father, Jehovah, a to invite the humble and downtrodden to come to him.Matthew 11:25-27.

Matthews Gospel highlights the outstanding qualities that Jesus displayed as the promised Messiah and the future ruler of Gods Kingdom.Matthew 1:20-23 Isaiah 11:1-5.

How Can I Apply Matthew 1: 28 To My Life

Matthew 11:28 can be applied to my life by giving up all my worries, burdens and fear to Jesus and lay all at His feet. He wants you to lean on Him and learn from Him because He cares for you. Let go of everything and let God.

For you to have inner peace and rest, you must first take the responsibility of accepting Jesus as your Lord and saviour. He is inviting you to come to Him, the burden lifter, the comforter, and our life-giver. Without Him, you can do nothing.

You have no strength nor power of your own to save or deliver yourself. Acts 4:12 mentions that Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

You must cast off all our worries to Him without a doubt in your heart, wholly and willingly. When you are weary or weighed down by the problems of life, rest on His words, believing that He is with you and will share in your pain. God is too faithful, He will never go back on His words.

Rest on the promises of His words because no one else will fulfill promises like Christ. Man may fail or go back on their words but Christ’s words are forever settled.

The Psalmist reminds us in Psalm 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. Rest is found only in the Lord and not in ourselves nor the happenings in our lives or around us. Let us return to Him that we may find rest for our troubled soul.

Explanation And Commentary Of Matthew 1: 28

These great words of our Lord have been a balm to millions of weary Christians. God does not promise a life devoid of hardship, but for those who have attempted to carry their own burdens and earn their own salvation, it is water to a man in a desert who is dying of thirst.

Jesus saw that humanity was harassed and helpless . The sheep of his pasture were thirsty for living water . He himself will lead us beside still waters for a peaceful drink.

Weary and burdened is a perfect way to describe the state of men and women on the earth, in todays hurried society more than ever. The Savior beacons us to stop and look to him for rest. Isaiah 30:15 says, In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. How hard it is for us in our flesh to do the one thing that would be easiest: that is to simply trust him, and lay our burdens on the Lord.

What Does And I Will Give You Rest Mean

And I will give you rest is about a twofold promise of heartfelt peace and rest to all who simply trust, love, and obey Christ Jesus despite their situations. The greatest possession you look for is Gods rest which is similar to Peace. It is not the rest from physical exhaustion from daily work but the rest that calms, heals, and makes whole. Christ is the giver of rest, He will give you rest roundabout.

Hebrews 4:1-3 tell us Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:So I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest.

God has vow to give yourest or peace. Without His rest or peace, nothing can be achieved. You might have acquired material things but without the rest promised by Christ, there will always be a vacuum in your life.

The rest Jesus promised is yours when you believe and obey His commandments to have eternal life. When you have Gods rest, you will be calm and be able to lay down in peace without worries or anxiety.

What Does Jesus Mean By ‘come To Me All Who Are Weary I Will Give You Rest’

Matthew 11:28 I Will Give You Rest

It can be hard to know what it means to come to Jesus when youre weary. You may be thinking Im already saved, Ive already come to Jesus and Im still exhausted. These are moments when we have to ask ourselves if we are actually walking with Jesus and allowing Him to pour into us.

Jesus is unchanging, yet He changes us completely when we turn to Him. He molds us to look more like Him. He promises to be our life source, that we would die and be reborn in Him.

There is no striving in Jesus. He has already finished all the work that needs to be done, all He asks is that we come to Him and let Him do the work He so desires to do in our hearts.

What Does The Bible Say Matthew 1: 28

Question: Please explain Matthew 11:28-30.

Answer:

28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

This passage of the Bible has always been viewed as Christs worldwide invitation and I think rightly so. There are a few things that I think we need to take a close look at as well as give some serious considerations as to what Jesus said and how that He worded His teaching.

Lets consider just why Jesus said what he said in these verses of the Bible:

First of all in our society there is a great need for the cure for sin. Isaiah informs us that sin is outrageous and separates us from God . Then Paul tells us that all are under sin thus the need for a cure . John alerts us that we cannot truthfully deny sin in our lives without being a liar . Paul again reports that the payment for sin is death separation from God . Paul also advises that God is patient but, we need to be careful here and not take advantage of His patience . Last but not least Paul acquaints us with the fact that without God and Christ there is no hope for sin being cured in our lives .

Secondly, we see that Christs invitation is universal in nature all. Paul tells us that Gods plan for salvation has appeared to all . Then Luke informs us that God is not a respecter of persons .

Matthew 1: 28 Esv Biblical Translation Says:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest

There is no difference between the translations in NKJV and ESV. The difference in translations is between with NIV.

NKJV and ESV mentioned all you who labor and are heavy laden, while NIV states all you who are weary and burdened, NIV referred to those who labour and are heavy laden as wearied and burdened.

How Does Matthew 1: 28 Give Encouragement

Matthew 11:28 assures believers that we are not alone. When you hand over everything to Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to take charge, He will take care of the rest. There is no rest in any other than in the rest and peace Christ promised.

When you try to work out things on your own, you are only setting yourself up for frustration, depression, and setback. Jesus knows how overburdened and stressed you are, and He is drawing you into His gentle and loving presence because He wants to listen to you.

He knows you better than you understand yourself, therefore, He is offering rest for your soul. Psalm 23:2-3 reminds us that He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. God wants the best for us and so He will lead you to restful waters. Take Him by His words and turn to Him whenever you are troubled.

Jesus is inviting you to share in His greatness. When you have an intimate relationship with Jesus, you will find have inner peace and find rest for your soul. He will lift off that heavy load of sin from you.

Set Aside Regular Times Of Rest

Matthew 11:28-30 – Bible Song | I Will Give You Rest

After Jesus declared that he himself is our Sabbath rest, we no longer have to wait to experience the Sabbath once every 7 days. As you turn to God daily in prayer, also ask him for rest and refreshment.

When you plan your day, keep in mind there is a time to work and a time to rest. Do not allow work, or motherhood, to consume every moment of your life. After all, our souls are not saved by the works of our hands but by the grace of God.

One of my recommendations is to block out times on your weekly calendar for rest. Some of these can be more physical rest , while others can be focused on spiritual rest .

The daily routine of working, along with managing and troubleshooting life, can be overwhelming at times. In fact, it often makes it hard to quiet your mind. I know thats the case for me.

In a world where success is measured by how much you have, its easy to feel guilty or lazy if youre not constantly working or planning how to acquire more. More things more money more success more friends.

In this post, Im going to talk about the importance of rest and share some of my favorite Bible verses about rest and recovery.

What You Will Learn

‘come To Me All You Who Are Weary’: Is There Rest For The Weary

God does not only promise to give rest to the weary in Matthew 11:28. There are multiple passages in Scripture where God promises to give rest to the weary. In Exodus 33:14, God tells Moses, My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. Likewise, Ezekiel 34:15 says, I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord.

God promises to give us rest and He will give us rest. The rest spoken of in the Bible includes spiritual rest as discussed above, but God also wants you to rest in the peace of knowing you can bring Him all of your worries and lay them down at his feet.

In 1 Peter 5:7, the Apostle Peter writes, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. God truly cares about you, loves you, and yearns to give you the rest that only He can provide. When you feel weary and burdened, talk with God. Call out to God in prayer, pour your heart out before Him, and ask for His help. Ask Him to give you rest for your weary soul.

Ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives the one who seeks finds and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened .

Whatever is making you feel stressed, anxious, or wearied, God can help you. God is greater than any problem or challenge you are facing in your life. God does not intend for us to go through life alone.

Bible Commentary For Matthew 1: 28

Wesley’s Notes for Matthew 11:28

11:28 Come to me – Here he shows to whom he is pleased to reveal these things to the weary and heavy laden ye that labour – After rest in God: and are heavy laden – With the guilt and power of sin: and I will give you rest – I alone will freely give you rest from the guilt of sin by justification, and from the power of sin by sanctification.

People’s Bible Notes for Matthew 11:28

Mt 11:28 Come unto me. This is one of the sweetest passages in the New Testament. It shows the willingness of the Lord. The kings and earth and the great are usually difficult of access, while Jesus is not only willing, but invites us, to come to him. Note how gracious is the invitation! It is the Lord who speaks. He invites to come to him. The invitation is to those who labor and are heavy laden. He promises, to all these weary ones who come, rest. The offer is not that of a man, but of the Divine Savior. Millions in all ages since can bear witness that the promise is sure. That labour and are heavy laden. Feel heavily the burdens of life, of sin and sorrow. Rest. Peace of soul.

What Is A Matthew 1: 28 Prayer

Matthew 11:28 I Will Give You Rest

Dear Father, thank you for being mindful of me and granting me an invitation to Your presence. Help me to rest in Your grace and be calm when anxieties or challenges fill my soul. Speak to my heart for there are a lot of things racing in my thought. I pray for others who may also be struggling in any area of life. Let their burdens be lightened. Fill me and others with Your peace. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

We are so precious in the sight of God, hence the call to rest in Him. He is always willing, ready and, available to help us anytime we come to Him. If we surrender to Him, He will pull whatever weight is weighing us down off our shoulders. Jesus promises rest by taking off the burdens we bear because His burden is light.

You cant do it on your own for He is the only one that can take it off completely because the heavy part is always carried by Him. Lay down your dreams, hope, future, and most especially your burdens at the feet of Jesus, and He will give you rest.

Receive Rest As A Gift

God wants us to experience rest. Jesus tells us that if we come to him when we are tired, then he will give us rest. Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest .

That rest may simply take the form of quiet peace in our normally restless souls. Or it may be a gift of an experience, like when the Israelites finally entered into the Promised Land. Or like the beauteous nature in Psalm 23, He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.

When we take time to rest, we will find our strength restored, our hope renewed, and our spirits uplifted. We will more easily be able to return to our busy lives as moms.

Meaning Of Matthew 1: 28

Jesus warmly invited his listeners to come to him. He assured them that by learning from him, they would find refreshment and relief.

Come to me, all you who are toiling and loaded down. Those to whom Jesus extended this warm invitation were loaded down by rules and human traditions imposed on them by their religious leaders. The common people were also burdened by anxiety and toil, having to work long and hard just to make a living.

I will refresh you. Jesus promised to give relief, or rest, to those who accepted his kind invitation. He did so by helping them to understand what God truly expected of them. This knowledge set them free from enslavement to false ideas and oppressive religious traditions. Although learning and applying Jesus teachings took effort, doing so was refreshing.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me. In Bible times, workers often used a yokea wooden bar placed upon the shouldersto carry heavy loads. Thus, the word yoke took on the meaning of being subject to another persons authority and direction. The phrase learn from me can also be rendered become my disciples . So Jesus was encouraging his listeners to become his disciples by following him and imitating his example.John 13:13-15 1 Peter 2:21.
