Laws are not intended to outline and quantify humanity. However, some laws establish when and which individuals have a claim to certain rights. For example, although a non-resident of the United States is equally as human as a U.S. citizen, a U.S. citizen will have a claim to certain rights that a non-citizen will not.

Had we let the laws of the early 1800s continue to define that slaves were less human than their owners, we would probably still be practicing slavery today.

While some argue that theres no way to know when life begins, advancements in technology and medicine say otherwise. Several obstetric tools produce evidence that life begins at conception. Furthermore, research into the moment of conception has revealed some significant hints at the exact moment of lifes beginning.
Ultrasound Technology
While ultrasound technology was first applied to the field of medicine by Ian Donald in 1956, the wider use of ultrasound for viewing the preborn didnt occur until the 1970s.
Notably, the greatest revelations of preborn life via ultrasound came around the ruling of the famous Supreme court case, Roe vs. Wade .

The Beginning Of Human Life
It is quite clear that what was known more than 100 years ago, even intuitively before that, is that the fusion of sperm and oocyte begins the life of a new individual human being. In Human Embryology the terms understood to be integral in the common sense language are: human, being, person, individual, human being, life and human life. Unfortunately, every one of those terms has been parsed and corrupted to mean something it is not.
For example, we have already examined the corruption of the term individual into individuation, but explained how this corruption is seriously flawed. But, there has been another problem created that is: when the early embryo splits, does the soul also split? And, if until that time there has been no soul, how could there be a person?
First of all, this is a question not for science, but for theology or religion. The science is there and has been there for about 150 years. In fact, it ought to be clear by now that when human life begins has no relationship to religion at all!
In sum, virtually every human embryologist agrees that fertilization is the beginning of the new individual human life .

Who Is More Human
Life is a continuum. From the season of growing in the womb to being born, from playing as a child to growing older, each stage of life seems to blend gracefully into the next. Life progresses and time passes, culminating in death. Death, a very visible end point, is more easily defined than the point at which the continuum of human life begins.
Where is the starting point? If life is indeed a continual process, can we not just work backward to its beginning? There are a variety of opinions about lifes beginnings. Many say life begins at fertilization. Others argue strongly that life does not start until implantation in the womb. Still others say that human life begins only when the umbilical cord is cut, making the newborn child an independent agent. How is fact separated from opinion?
Perhaps another way to ask the question is, When do we become human? Certainly a child sitting on grandpas knee or a fully grown adult would be considered human. Is the adult more human than the child? Of course not. No reasonable person would consider the child to be less human. At what point along the journey did this child become human? Was it at fertilization, somewhere during his development, or at birth?

Does Human Life Begin When We Take Our First Breath
There are those who say human life begins when we take our first breath. Does the fact that unborn children dont breathe air mean they arent yet live human beings? Does the Bible teach this in Genesis 2:7 when it talks about the breath of life in the account of the creation of Adam, as some claim?
The first thing to note when responding to those who hold this view is that Genesis 2:7 isnt about Adams breath. Heres what it says:
Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being.
Adam breathing isnt what gave him life. The point is that God gave life to Adam . This passage is about God giving life to His creation. There is nothing in here about Adam breathingthough, of course, we can assume Adam began to breathe after being given life since thats the way adults normally function.
When talking about newly-conceived human beingsand not the first adult man directly created from non-living matter by Godthe Bible gives no indication that there is a time before birth when we are not whole human beings but merely bodies without souls. If one is going to speculate that God completes the essence of a human being by adding a soul at some point after conception, please keep in mind that all this can be is speculation. There is no good biblical reason to think its true and, in fact, the Luke 1 passage seems to directly contradict it.
Abortion: What The Bible Says

Proponents argue their case on religious grounds, so it’s worth asking what the Bible says about it.
The Bible doesn’t talk about abortion, but it does say when a human being’s life begins.
Genesis 2:7 is clearest. The first human became a “living being” when God blew into its nostrils and it started to breathe. Human life begins when you start breathing, biblical writers thought. It ends when you stop. That’s why the Hebrew word often translated “spirit” — “life force” might be a better translation — literally means “wind” or “breath.”
But what about babies in the womb?
A few passages talk about someone called by God before birth: “The LORD called me from the womb. From the innermost parts of my mother, God named me … and said to me, ‘You are my servant Israel, in whom I’ll be glorified” .
Here, the one called is the nation Israel, not an individual. A nation of course can’t occupy a womb. The language is figurative not literal. It isn’t describing prenatal biology or pinpointing when human life begins. It’s affirming God’s power and Israel’s calling to a special mission in the world.
Other passages make the same point by saying someone’s called by God before they’re even conceived . I’ve not heard anyone make the case, based on these texts, that human life begins before conception.

A serious responsibility of a bishop is to insure the purity of teaching in areas of faith and morals . These teachings must be in conformity with the universal and historic teachings found in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and defined by the teaching office of the Catholic Church. The beauty of Catholicism rests in part on its ability to be clear.
Recently there has been high-profile press given to arguments concerning when human life begins. I am concerned about clarity and any misrepresentation of consistent Catholic teaching. My remarks are made in response to numerous questions posed to me by good Catholics in our own Diocese of Lake Charles who are confused by glib citations of patristic authorities, such as St. Augustine, that life begins at some other time than conception.
In response, I would say:
1. St. Augustine, one of our most revered Fathers, lived and wrote almost 1,500 years ago he did not see the world around him with a scientific perspective as we know it today as with early writers of this and later periods, his concern was the nature of the immortal soul and the human being he approached this question primarily from the perspective of theology and philosophy.
