Women Do Not Fit The Requirements For Being Pastors

Biblical Meaning of Ordination – Dr. George Knight

In 1 Timothy and Titus, Paul gives two lists of requirements that men must meet if they want to become pastors. Below is the one that is addressed to overseers, which is simply another word for pastors:

Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for Gods church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

Here, we see that one of the requirements for someone to be a pastor is that he must be the husband of one wife. This disqualifies all men who are married to more than one woman from being pastors, in addition to all women, who cannot be husbands of one wife. In Pauls other list, in which he refers to elders , Paul also teaches that they must be the husband of one wife , which is, again, something that a woman cannot be. Also note that in these lists, Paul is providing instructions for men only by his exclusive use of the masculine pronouns he and his.

Can A Friend Marry You

Your friend can create the ceremony as they wish just as long as the authorised marriage celebrant delivers the monitium, hears the couple make their legal vows and then facilitates at the signing of the marriage certificates. All of this can be done quite quickly, enabling your friend to officiate the rest.

The Biblical Meaning Of Ordination

Heres a great talk by Dr. George Knight that is very insightful on the womens ordination issue. Ive written out a summary of it below.

Basic idea: The modern idea that ordination confers spiritual power on a person does not exist in the Bible. Its a Catholic concept. The Bible does teach a laying on of hands to dedicate pastors and leaders. But, this is only public recognition that Gods Spirit is clearly seen as having given a spiritual gift to a person. The Holy Spirit decides who gets a gift, not any person or church. Its likely that Satan is trying to cause people to reject and demean Gods truths that women are now preaching as prophesied by causing some misguided people to oppose women pastors and the ordination of women.

Heres an interesting text on ordination:

Moses told them, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Each of you, take your swords and go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other. Kill everyoneeven your brothers, friends, and neighbors. 28 The Levites obeyed Moses command, and about 3,000 people died that day.29 Then Moses told the Levites, Today you have ordained yourselves for the service of the Lord, for you obeyed him even though it meant killing your own sons and brothers. Today you have earned a blessing. Exodus 32:27-29

The Lord Jesus Disciples

Another important point worth mentioning is Jesus choice of the Twelve apostlesâhis closest followers throughout his earthly ministry and those who became the first leaders and pastors of the church after his death, resurrection, and ascension to Heavenâall of whom were men:

In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

The fact that our Lord himself only appointed men as apostles reflects the New Testament teaching that our Lord only appoints certain men in his church to be pastors to shepherd the flock. Furthermore, it is evident that Christs choice of the Twelveâalong with Pauls lettersâset the pattern for the church, because throughout all of church history only men were ordained into the pastoral ministry in every church up until around the time of World War II and beyond.

Where Does Ordained Come From

The first records of ordained as an adjective come from around the 1300s. The verb ordain is derived from the Latin verb ordinre, meaning to arrange, order, appoint.

The original sense of the verb ordain is to appoint to holy office. In Christianity, this is done through the ceremony of ordination, which sometimes refers to the sacrament of holy orders. Those who have undergone this process are generally called ordained ministers, indicating that they have officially completed the steps to gain their status as a priest or minister. Ordained ministers are said to be members of the clergy and they are often given the title reverend.

RVWD is my abbreviation for Religious Vocabulary Word of the Day. I do not intend for these word investigations to be exhaustive, but I hope they stimulate some thinking about assumptions. Possibly they will help with honest evaluations about what is truth and what is unnecessary baggage in life. The word ordain in the Bible is closely related to the word appoint. In fact, out of the six Greek words listed in Vines Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words which are sometimes translated as ordain or ordained, five of those are simply linked back to the explanations for various Greek words that are translated as appoint or appointed. Even with this close connection, though, forms of the word English word appoint are used many more times in the five main translations I compared.

What Is The Ordination In The Bible

ordination, in Christian churches, a rite for the dedication and commissioning of ministers. The essential ceremony consists of the laying of hands of the ordaining minister upon the head of the one being ordained, with prayer for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and of grace required for the carrying out of the ministry.

Appointment Of Servants In The Church

What Does It Mean To Be Ordained?
  • Acts 6:1-6 Brethren, select from among you seven men whom we may appoint over this task.
  • Acts 14:23 And they appointed elders for them in every church.
  • 1Corinthians 16:15 â¦they have appointed themselves for the ministry
  • Titus 1:5 Set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you.

In every case it was the congregation who made the choice. In every case it was the chosen persons who surrendered and devoted themselves. The role of the apostles or evangelist was to prepare the congregation for their choice by teaching, and then giving effect and recognition to the congregationâs choice with an appropriate pronouncement to confirm the appointment and make it official.

Comment 2: Special attention needs to be given to the use of tasso in 1Corinthians 16:15 and Acts 13:48. In the first passage, the household of Stephanas devoted themselves for ministry. In the latter passage certain Gentiles at Antioch in Pisidia believed Paulâs preaching because they had been devoted to eternal life.

In other words they were God fearing people seeking light and salvation. Most translations use the word appointed or ordained here, and people of the Calvinistic persuasion use this verse to prove that individuals have been chosen by God before the foundation of the world and foreordained to eternal life without themselves having anything to do with it. There is no ground for this.

Romans 13 Powers That Be Ordained Of God

This verse will be misused in a time of crisis. So this bible study is to help us to understand, to provide an answer to the powers that be, to those ministers who have been trained to teach the people to obey your government and misuse these verses out of their context. Christians are the most law abiding citizens on the planet when it comes to civil government. However when government steps out of the civil realm and into the moral realm and things pertaining to God. History has declared that Christians have often stood against those laws made by governments which were ordained of God.

Powers that Be Ordained of God

The bible tells us Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. .

It also tells us that those powers that be have men that beareth not the sword in vain. In most places we understand that this has to do with bearing arms, and that these are ministers of God according to the book of Romans.

Romans 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

In Romans 13 we read the same principle.

That is a complete misunderstanding of Romans 13 and the entire bible which teaches the same principle throughout. In Romans 13 we are told about the duties of government.

What Does Ordained Mean in Acts 13:48

In Acts 13:48, Luke writes, and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. Some interpret ordained here to mean predestined. However, by studying the context and the use of the word ordained in other passages, well see that ordained here does not mean predestined, at all. Rather, it has the combined meaning of ordered and appointed. Thats why simply translating this as appointed, as in some of the modern translations, is not correct.

Here are the reasons that the word ordained doesnt mean predestined:

Lukes other uses of the word ordained Luke uses the word ordained five other times in the Acts of the Apostles and never does it mean predestined. All of the definitions of ordained below are English dictionary definitions.

  • Acts 1:22 ordained = Matthias was introduced into the office of the ministry. Notice that the choice of Judas Iscariots replacement was determined by lot among the apostles, themselves. Matthias was not predestined.
  • Acts 10:42 ordained = Jesus was invested with see Jn 5:22.
  • Acts 14:23 ordained = the elders were invested with ministerial functions.

You Are Ordained By God

NRSV Ordination Gift Edition Bible

Sunday, August 12, 2012

âYe are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.â

John 15:14-16

One of the most important and meaningful days of my life occurred in 1983 when I was ordained as a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During that service, men of God came and prayed over me as I was appointed to fill the office of ministry to which God had called me. I cherish the memory of that day.

While we have special services to ordain men as pastors and deacons for those offices of the church, there is also a very real sense in which each believer is ordainedespecially appointed by Godnot for a church office, but to be a fruitful Christian. Many today have fallen into the trap of thinking that church work is only the responsibility of full-time Christian workers. In reality, every believer is meant to be a fruitful, productive, active worker in Gods kingdom.

Todayâs Growth Principle:

Do everything you can today to fulfill Gods appointed purpose for your life by bearing fruit.

What Does Ordination Mean Definition Of Ordination:

If you are ordained, you are expected by society to be different, to be a better person and to have a higher moral center in which others take refuge in. There is no discussion about it. This is what society expects of its clergy and for that degree of being “different” it grants benefits and entitlements according to this exalted status. In appreciation of being a person who assists in times of turmoil and ushers in times of joy and togetherness, and who maintains the hope of the people, the tax laws have been designed to favor clergy, but you don’t get those benefits for just being a clergy person. You must actively be engaged in conducting the services of a clergy person. This is where many ULC MONASTERY ministers fail in their responsibilities. They may feel that being ordained is all they need and they are wrong – seriously wrong. Being and doing are two different sets of conditions. Yes, the ordination into the ministry legally entitles you to the title Reverend, but that is just a title. We do offer information on starting a congregation, if you so choose. Everything else society demands of an ordained minister is part of the duties of a member of the cloth.

You must be actively engaged in the performance of the duties of a minister in your belief system. Saying a prayer before meals is not sufficient to claim benefits under the tax code. Reasonableness has to be understood by the individual and it IS understood and enforced by the IRS.

What Does It Mean For A Minister To Be Ordained

Biblical Meaning of Ordination – Dr. G. Knight – Subtitulado

Most of our religious world puts great stress on the proper ordination of ministers, but when we turn to the Bible, we find that it says very little on the subject. Under the old covenant, there were very elaborate rituals to be followed in ordaining priests, including special garments, offerings, and being anointed with oil . Under the New Testament, however, there is no longer a separate priesthood as there was under Judaism. Under the New Testament, all Christians have a great high priest, Jesus Christ, who urges all Christians to perform the priestly functions to come boldly unto the throne of grace . Peter further points out that all Christians are priests before God. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ .

The word ordain implies the appointing of, or investing of one with authority. Speaking of Paul and Barnabas, Luke says that when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed . When a problem arose in the Jerusalem church, the apostles appointed seven men to serve who were apparently the first deacons , whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them .
