    Our Lady Of Compassion

The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows grew in popularity in the 12th century, although under various titles. Some writings would place its roots in the eleventh century, especially among the Benedictine monks. The first altar to the Mater Dolorosa was set up in 1221 at the Cistercian monastery of Schönau.

The formal feast of the Our Lady of Sorrows was originated by a provincial synod of Cologne in 1423. It was designated for the Friday after the third Sunday after Easter and had the title: Commemoratio angustiae et doloris B. Mariae V. Its object was the sorrow of Mary during the Crucifixion and Death of Christ. Before the sixteenth century this feast was limited to the dioceses of North Germany, Scandinavia, and Scotland.

According to Fr. William Saunders, “… in 1482, the feast was officially placed in the Roman Missal under the title of Our Lady of Compassion, highlighting the great love our Blessed Mother displayed in suffering with her Son. The word compassion derives from the Latin roots cum and patior which means “to suffer with”.

After 1600 it became popular in France and was set for the Friday before Palm Sunday. By a Decree of 22 April 1727, Pope Benedict XIII extended it to the entire Latin Church, under the title “Septem dolorum B.M.V.”. In 1954, it still held the rank of major double in the General Roman Calendar. Pope John XXIII‘s 1960 Code of Rubrics reduced it to the level of a commemoration.

Brief History Of Our Lady Of Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church-Holy Mass (February 27, 2022)

Although Fr. Joseph Baryard, of St. Thomas, is said to have celebrated the first Sunday Mass in Aylmer on 18 January 1901, the town is listed as one of the stations of Holy Angels by 1866. By 1904, a Mass was held in Aylmer about once every two months, sometimes on Sundays. On 12 July 1939, Bishop Kidd appointed Fr. Simon E White as pastor of the new parish of Our Lady of Sorrows. On 4 September 1939, a lot was purchased from Mrs. McConnell, and the house on the lot became the rectory. The first sod for the church was turned, on 14 November 1939, and Bishop Kidd laid the cornerstone on 10 December 1939. The first Mass in the new basement church was celebrated on 14 January 1940. The official opening was held on 21 July 1940. Forty-three families had attended the first Mass in January 1940, and ten years later the number of families in the parish had swelled to 350. In January 1951, Father White announced a campaign to build a church on the foundations of the basement church. The Greek inscription in gold leaf frieze that translates as Glory to God in the highest and peace to men who seek His favour, on the front of the main altar, was suggested by Fr. Charles T McManus, the pastor The brass chandelier was made in the Netherlands, and the Crucifixion scene behind the altar was carved near Milan, Italy.

Sherwood Park Parish Hosts Papal Mass Livestream

Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, Toronto, ON

While thousands watched the Papal mass at Commonwealth, around 100 people watched the historic occasion through a livestream at a church in Sherwood Park.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish hosted the event to help ensure anyone who wanted to watch Pope Francis’ liturgy could still experience the special occasion.

“For people that couldn’t attend at the Commonwealth for various reasons, like it could be mobility issues or just that they didn’t want crowds,” said Rita Sandmaier, a parishioner.

“So we thought at least we can show the video and allow them to participate in this special mass with the Pope,” Sandmaier added.

Almost four decades ago, Sandmaier was in the crowd when Pope John Paul II was in Alberta for his Papal visit.

“It was just such a grace-filled event,” she said.

For this visit, she thought it was important to allow everyone the opportunity to join in and hear the Pope’s words.

“To engage the parish in this whole journey of the Pope coming to Canada and also to, I believe, educate us in terms of what happened to the Indigenous People,” Sandmaier said. “So it all goes together that we’re here to journey with the people.”

Rod Randolph attended the viewing and was eager to hear the Pope’s message of reconciliation and hope.

“We need to learn from it and hopefully can become better as a result of it,” Randolph told CTV News Edmonton. “We do a lot of harmful things to one another, in all sorts of arenas, and this is one of them for sure.

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is a Roman Catholicchurch in Pietà, Malta. It was established in the late 16th or early 17th century near a cemetery in which victims of the 15921593 Malta plague epidemic were buried. It was originally dedicated to Saint Roch, but after a convent was built next to it in the early 17th century it was rededicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. The church later gave its name to the town of Pietà which developed nearby, and the present building dates back to the mid-18th century when it was reconstructed. Both the church and the convent are currently in the hands of a Catholic youth ministry.

    OLOS Sharon Mass 6th Sunday of Easter 11AM ~ May 22, 2022

This weekend I am on vacation visiting with family in Florida, I carry you all with me in prayer hoping that you each have some time to relax this summer.Todays Gospel lesson on prayer offers something important to our spiritual growth. Not only does Jesus share his own prayer with us, but Jesus reminds us that all prayers will be answered. And I tell you, ask and you will receive seek and you will find knock and the door will be opened to you. As we read this, we may feel in our hearts that this is not true. How many of us have prayed hard for something only to feel unheard. Even Jesus prayed that he not have to drink the cup of his passion, yet was crucified in the end. Jesus assures us that our prayers will always be answered for the good, we just need to be open to that good being what is Gods will. May we be strengthened this week to grow in our ability to trust in Gods love and Gods provident care in our lives.~ Fr. Bob

The Seven Sorrows Of The Blessed Virgin Mary

Learn how and when to remove this template message)

In 1668, a separate feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, celebrated on the third Sunday in September, was granted to the Servites.Pope Pius VII introduced it into the General Roman Calendar in 1814. In 1913, Pope Pius X, in view of his reform giving precedence to Sundays over ordinary feasts, moved this feast to September 15, the day after the Feast of the Cross. It is still observed on that date.

Since there were thus two feasts with the same title, on each of which the Stabat Matersequence was recited, the Passion Week celebration was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969 as a duplicate of the September feast. Each of the two celebrations had been called a feast of “The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary” . Recitation of the Stabat Mater was made optional.

The existence of traditional manifestations of public devotion, such as processions with statues of Our Lady of Sorrows on days leading to Good Friday, has led to the maintenance on the previous Friday of the liturgical celebration of the Sorrows of Mary in some local calendars, as in Malta.

For everywhere the latest edition of the Roman Missal provides on that Friday the optional collect:

Pope Benedict XVI‘s motu proprioSummorum Pontificum authorizes, under certain conditions, continued use of the 1962 Roman Missal, which contains the feast of the Friday of the fifth week of Lent.
