What Does The Bible Say About Marriage And Family

Who Is The Minister Of The Sacraments Of Marriage

What Does the Bible Say About… Marriage and the Family?

Spouses are the servants of the sacrament of marriage because the sign – the outward sign – of the sacrament is not the nuptial mass or something the priest can do, but the marriage contract itself. This does not mean the marriage license that the couple receives from the state, but each spouse gives the oath to the other.

What Is The View Of Marriage In The Catholic Church

The Catholic Perspective on Marriage and the Mystery of Marriage. The Catholic Church teaches them to regard marriage as sacred. This is the gift of the hand of God, who created male and female in his image, to be one body. The concept of marriage for the Catholic Church is deeply rooted in scripture.

Common Law Marriage Is Not In The Bible

When Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4, he revealed something significant that we often miss in this passage. In verses 17-18, Jesus said to the woman:

“You have correctly said, âI have no husbandâ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband this you have said truly.”

The woman had been hiding the fact that the man she was living with was not her husband. According to the New Bible Commentary notes on this passage of Scripture, Common Law Marriage had no religious support in the Jewish faith. Living with a person in sexual union did not constitute a “husband and wife” relationship. Jesus made that plain here.

Therefore, position number one does not have a foundation in Scripture.

Romans 13:1-2 is one of several passages in Scripture that refers to the importance of believers honoring governmental authority in general:

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”

These verses give position number two stronger biblical support.

The Blessing Of Obedience

Here are some justifications people give to say marriage should not be required:

  • “If we marry, we’ll lose financial benefits.”
  • “I have bad credit. Getting married will ruin my spouse’s credit.”
  • “A piece of paper won’t make any difference. It’s our love and private commitment to each other that matters.”

We can come up with hundreds of excuses not to obey God, but a life of surrender requires a heart of obedience to our Lord. But, and here’s the beautiful part, the Lord always blesses obedience:

“You will experience all these blessings if you obey the Lord your God.”

Stepping out in faith requires trust in the Master as we follow his will. Nothing we give up for the sake of obedience will compare to the blessings and joy of obeying.

Christian Views On Marriage

Marriage according to the Holy Bible

From the earliest days of the Christian faith, Christians have honored holy matrimony as a divinely blessed, lifelong, monogamous union, between a man and a woman. According to the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer , reflecting the traditional view, “Christian marriage is a solemn and public covenant between a man and a woman in the presence of God,” “intended by God for their mutual joy for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity and, when it is God’s will, for the procreation of children and their nurture.” However, while many Christians might agree with the traditional definition, the terminology and theological views of marriage have varied through time in different countries, and among Christian denominations.

Many Protestants consider marriage to be a sacred institution or “holy ordinance” of God. Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians consider marriage a holy sacrament or sacred mystery. However, there have been and are differing attitudes among denominations and individual Christians towards not only the concept of Christian marriage, but also concerning divorce, remarriage, gender roles, family authority , the legal status of married women, birth control, , cousin marriage, , interfaith marriage, same-sex marriage, and polygamy, among other topics, so that in the 21st century there cannot be said to be a single, uniform, worldwide view of marriage among all who profess to be Christians.

Close Bond In Marriage

The Lord God said, It is not good that man should be alone I will make a helper comparable to him . After each of the six days of Creation week, God reviewed what He had made and saw that it was good. But there was one thing in Eden that very first week that was not good! All the animals God had created, came in pairsa male and a female. But there was no female for Adam! That is when God created Eve and performed the very first marriage .

God made men and women to complement each otherphysically, mentally, and socially. He built into our being a desire for the companionship of a husband or wife. Thats why the Bible says, He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord .

Jeff:If youre not in the Facebook group, make sure to get in the group. This question were going to talk about today was actually, I believe, from the group. I think we have almost a thousand people in there now, eight or 900 people are fathers, encouraging one another, sharpen each other.

But the question we got from a dad in the group here was what does the Bible mean when it says leave and cleave? Because immediately when you start leaning into the family teams concept, you start butting up against this concept of what people always bring up, which is Genesis 1 and 2, against building a multi-generational family team on mission, meaning when we say live into your story, live into your generations, live into the people above you and below you and around you, sometimes that makes some alarms go off for some people on the West of saying like, Oh, doesnt the Bible say when you get married to leave and to go away and to start a new thing? And so this is Attention in the scriptures do say that. So Jeremy, what would you say that means? And how do we kind of wrestle through that?

And so in the context of marriage, you are to leave those other relationships. Every other relationship in your life pales in comparison to the oneness that you need to develop and protect with your wife or with your husband. So thats what its talking about.

What Is The Meaning Of Sacramental Marriage In The Bible

The sacrament of marriage is a permanent union of a man and a woman as a couple for life, created for the mutual benefit and procreation of their children. The Old Testament declares that man was created in the image and likeness of God, and that man and woman were created for each other and became one in marriage.

The Bible’s Teaching On Marriage And Family

Incredible as it may seem, we can no longer assume that people in our culture understand what the proper definition of “marriage” and “the family” is. Not only is this a sad commentary on the impact of same-sex marriage activists on our society, it also shows how the culture’s memory of the biblical tradition on which it is largely based is fading fast. What is marriage, biblically defined? And what is the biblical definition of a family?

In this brief treatise on marriage and the family, we will take up these questions and proceed to discuss a number of related matters, such as singleness, divorce and remarriage, and homosexuality, in an effort to develop a full-orbed understanding of the biblical teaching on the subject. As I have sought to demonstrate at some length in my book God, Marriage, and the Family: Rebuilding the Biblical Foundation, marriage and the family are institutions under siege today, and only a return to the biblical foundation of these God-given institutions will reverse the decline of marriage and the family in our culture today.

Key Passages And Exceptions Where Is Divorce Is Allowed

Adultery

There are two clear biblical reasons where divorce is allowed. The first one being adultery/sexual immorality.

It has been said, Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce. But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Matthew 5:31-32

Malachi 2:16 states that the man who hates and divorces his wife, says the Lord, the God of Israel, does violence to the one he should protect, says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful. Moses teaching on divorce was this:

If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. Deuteronomy 24:1-4

Desertion

The first paragraph of this passage clearly indicates that Gods desire is that married couples stay together even through disagreements and difficulties in the marriage.
