Does Baptism Save You

This is the most important question one can ask regarding baptism and the answer separates churches by a deep gorge. The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, all believe in baptismal regeneration , whereas the vast majority of the worlds Protestants do not. This is one of the big issues that keep these communions separate today.

First, it is clear from 1 Corinthians 1:1418 Ephesians 2:8-9 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 and a plethora of other passages that it is the Gospel that saves us, not baptism.

In this section I will fight to defend the biblical position that water baptism does not save. I will also give a few of the Biblical texts which those on the other side of this issue commonly cite.

The Ethiopian Eunuch in Acts 8 is baptized after understanding the Gospel as explained by Philip. In Acts 10 it is once the Holy Spirit has descended upon the household of Cornelius that Peter says, Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have. And although the Ephesian believers in Acts 19 did not receive the Holy Spirit until they were baptized in the name of Jesus, they were called disciples before Paul baptized them. But more importantly, Paul saw fit to explain the connection to Jesus and His gospel before baptizing them. If belief and repentance were not necessary before baptism, why wouldnt Paul have just rebaptized them, rather than bothering to explain first?

Baptism Is Not A Profession Of Perfection

When Christians get baptized, you are NOT saying to the world that you have it all together. You are NOT saying you have victory over your struggles. You are NOT saying you are FREE from Sin. You are NOT saying you have all the answers. You are NOT saying you no longer have doubts. You are NOT saying you are better than everyone else.

Are We Saved By Baptism

You will notice that the Bible ties baptism to salvation. However, it isnt the act of baptism that saves you. Ephesians 2:8-9 is clear that our works dont contribute to our salvation. We cant earn salvation, even by being baptized.

However, you must ask yourself. If Jesus asks you to do something and you refuse to do it, what does that mean? It means you are willfully disobedient. Is a willfully disobedient person repentant? Absolutely not!

Baptism is not what saves you, Jesus does! But refusing baptism says something powerful about the state of your relationship with Jesus.

Keep in mind, if you are unable to get baptized, like the thief on the cross, God understands your circumstances. However, if you are able to be baptized and wont or choose not to, that action is willful sin which disqualifies you from salvation.

Does The Bible Support Baptism For The Dead

There is exactly one verse in the entire Bible that handles the subject of baptism for the dead.

As stated above, it is very easy to see that this verse does not talk about Christians baptizing for the dead.

It is also clear from the writings of the early church fathers that practitioners of this practice were pagans. Not Christians.

There were some heretical fringe groups that would mix Christianity with paganism, and the church fathers called them out on this.

When you read the LDS writings on this, they say the groups who performed baptism for the dead were Christians.

But the early church fathers call these same groups heretics or cults. And they were eyewitnesses of these events.

Doesnt this give them more credibility than a 21st century LDS commentator? I think so.

As part of the discussion about baptizing for the dead, it makes sense for us to go back and ask more questions about what baptism means to the Christian in the first place.

What Are The Types Of Water Baptism

I do NOT want to confuse anyone or judge another denomination on the various types of baptism. Hence the reason, I am not mentioning them. However, for me personally, I believe immersion in water baptism is modeling HOW Jesus was baptized.

As was previously stated, immersion baptism has a symbolic meaning.

Immersion is symbolic meaning a spiritual cleansing by Jesus death and burial and rising from the water with a new life. Does the water have some sort of magical properties? No. That said, as a follower of Jesus Christ I want to follow the example of my savior.

What Is The Proper Mode Of Baptism

Immersion, sprinkling, and pouring are three common modes. Some who practice immersion do it three times forward . I dont believe that the mode of baptism should be an issue worth dividing over. But immersion is the meaning of the Greek word it best represents the biblical truths symbolized by baptism and, it was the method used in the early church.

The Greek word for baptize was used of a ship which had sunk or of a man who had drowned . It means to dip or submerge. But when the translators of the English Bible came to the word, sprinkling was the official mode, so they sidestepped the awkward matter by transliterating the Greek word into English, hence coining the word baptize. It should be translated dipping!

Immersion best represents the truth of total identification with Christ that baptism symbolizes. When the believer goes into the water, it pictures death to his old way of life. When he comes out of the water, it speaks of the fact that now he is raised to newness of life in Christ. Immersion also pictures total cleansing from sin. While it ought to be done in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit , there is no indication that it requires three separate immersions. Once under better symbolizes the fact that we are placed into Christ once and for all by the Holy Spirit.

Ill come at the question from a few angles in this post, but I wont bury the lead. Baptism is a church ordinance or sacrament for a believer in Jesus who is publicly affirming his faith in Jesus and affirmed as Jesus disciple by the congregation of that mans local church.

Not only do Christians hold that baptism is a symbolic ceremony meant to demonstrate a believers faith in Jesus Christ, but it also identifies believers with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Baptism is an important act of obedience that is performed after a man or woman is saved. However, it is not, in and of itself, a saving act. Rather, baptism points to the saving work of Christ on the cross.

Of course, even in giving that answer I have gotten ahead of myself. Lets start linguistically. Now, we have to recognize up front that etymology is no trump card in any but etymological discussions. If you and I are wondering whether a certain chair would float in water and a third person walks in and informs us that the early Middle English word flot meant sea, which wasnt a verb at all, so our discussion is pointless, we would easily recognize the irrelevance of his comment.

Baptism is mentioned often in the Bible. Jesus spoke of baptism and was baptized by John. Baptism is discussed in the book of Acts by Luke. Paul talked of baptism throughout his epistles. Even St. Peter got involved with baptism and wrote about it in his first letter.

What Is Believer’s Baptism

We are in danger of Gods wrath but we cannot save ourselves . Even our most righteous acts are polluted and unacceptable to God . However, even though we cant fix our own hearts, we shouldnt despair: the LORD is the God who saves . Long ago, God sent His prophets to announce that a day was coming when God would send the Holy Spirit to wash clean the hearts of His people . The short answer is no. However, as Christians, we are commanded to be baptized, and this is something we should want to do.

Baptism Like Any Other Act Of Obedience Does Not Impart Salvation

Nothing we could ever do makes us righteous or good before the Lord. When we attempt to add the Gospel message by requiring works, even good works like baptism, we tear down the basic foundation that in Christ alone are we saved.

If this is true, whats the point of baptism? When Scripture prescribes ordinances for the Church, like baptism, it does so in providing Christ-followers with instruction for worshiping the Lord and living out their new identity in Christ. We see this clearly as we harvest Scripture for understanding regarding the purpose of baptism.

Generically, the word baptism denotes an inauguration or initiation in a task or role. Scripturally, baptism follows in this pattern by representing new life in the Gospel before the Lord and before the church. It does so in two ways. First, baptism identifies one with the Lord both in his death and in his resurrection . Notice the identity shift here. The old self, the sinful self, dies before the cross and the new self is resurrected to new life in Christ.

Second, the waters of baptism represent a cleansing of sin . One cannot be both sinful and holy. Sin must be removed in order for holiness to be imparted. The washing of the water symbolizes the washing away of sin. In this, the Christ-follower is not what she was before, but is a new, clean creation before the Lord.
