What Does Genesis Chapter 38 Mean

Anti-Gay Pastor Who Cheered Orlando Massacre Found Guilty Of Child Molestation

Genesis 38. Judah has three children with a Canaanite woman – Jehovah takes the lives of Er and Onan – Tamar, disguised as a harlot, gives birth to twins to Judah. 6 And Judah took a wife for his firstborn Er, whose name was Tamar. 7 And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah took his life.

Is Masturbation Always Wrong

DIFFICULT MORAL QUESTIONS: It’s clear that masturbation is a grave sin but what if its for medical reasons?

Q. I am 78 years old and have been married to my wife for 53 years. Lately I have begun to experience periodic impotence. My doctor recommends masturbation as he thinks my problem is psychological. Under these circumstances can masturbation be legitimate? Thank you.

A. The Catechism of the Catholic Church has this to say about masturbation:

By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action. The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose. For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved .

Pleasure of itself is neither good nor bad. Its value derives from that in which it is taken, usually from some kind of action.

Masturbation, not directed toward another in love, but self-directed, seeks isolated pleasure. And it is not and never can be open to new life.

In The Bible Unclean Does Not Primarily Indicate That Something Is Inherently Evil Or Is A Sign Of Moral Turpitude

The Bible does not say that women are evil or less than men because of their menstrual cycles or the participating in the birthing process, any more than it says men are evil when they ejaculate. Clean and unclean do have moral implications in some passages, but that is not the primary medium of the convention, neither is it relevant to the passage at hand.

A key passage to understand the clean/unclean dichotomy is Leviticus 10:10-11:

You are to distinguish between the holy and the common , and between the unclean and the clean and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them through Moses.

Some older translations will still render the word chol as profane or unholy, but the meaning of these choices is lost to modern readers. It does not speak primarily to moral or ethical compositions. The sense of the word is the distinction between things that are specifically suitable for use in worship and things that are not .

Thus the chiastic structure of the passage holy, common // unclean, clean shows the holy is clean because it is separate and ready to enter into a community of worship, and the common is unclean in that it is not suitable for worship, but it is not necessarily evil.

Where The Semen Goes

Genesis 38

8 Then Judah said to Onan, Lie with your brothers wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother.9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his so whenever he lay with his brothers wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the LORDs sight so he put him to death also.

Now that we have that out of the way, lets talk about exactly where that semen does go. The truth is, your husband can ejaculate wherever you and he see fit. Of course there is something special and meaningful to having your husband come inside you. Its a loving moment. But there are several reasons why a couple may decide to handle things other ways.

Some couples may be using NFP as their method of birth control, instead of birth control pills or condoms. During the time of ovulation, the husband may choose to pull out and come on his wife or on himself, to prevent pregnancy. Of course he can always come into a towel too.

Spicy Nutmeg wrote a great article about coming out of your comfort zones. Sometimes trying something new is scary. I will tell you from experience, that the times Ive tried something new are the times that Ive grown in my sexuality and my relationship with my husband. I pray Gods blessings on your marriage!

What Does This Mean For Us Today

Masturbation

Masturbation is a tough topic to tackle. It’s the cause of guilt and shame and is still oh-so-very taboo. If you’re struggling with this issue, talk to someone. Talk to a counselor, a pastor, or a trusted friend who is rooted in Gods word. If youre married, definitely have a conversation with your spouse. Gods word says nothing specifically about masturbation. This gives us freedom within the boundaries of, possibly, marriage for it to have a place in our lives. And even then, we must tread carefully. Here are some Biblical principles we can apply when considering the questionable activity of masturbation.

Bible Verses about Self-Control

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

Since an overseer manages Gods household, he must be blamelessnot overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.

The end of all things is at hand therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace .

For freedom Christ has set us free stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.

What Does The Bible Say About Pulling Out

Contraception has become a cultural thing in the world today.

Two people having sex when theyre not married is also seen as the norm.

So pulling out, as some call it, is just a form of contraception for many.

Of course most people today will use a condom, so that they get the satisfaction felt before ejaculation occurs, often called the climax.

But what does the Most High think about a man wasting his seed ?

Lets look at the Onan and Tamar Bible verses:

Genesis 38:6-10

6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7 And Er, Judahs firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord and the Lord slew him.

8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brothers wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brothers wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.

In the scripture above, the son of a man named Judah, Er, dies before he can give birth to children for his wife.

As, is the command by the Most High in such cases, if the brother of a widows husband is alive, its his duty to give child to his brothers wife .

Deuteronomy 25:5

Onans actions angered the Most High who killed him as a result .

Pregnancy is decided by the Most High, and we need to understand that if were ready to have sex were ready to have a baby.

What Does The Bible Say About Pouring On Land

Genesis tells that there was a man named Judah who had two sons: Er and Onan. Well, it turns out that Onan’s clever is going and look what he did: And knowing Onan that the offspring were not to be his, it happened that when he came to his brother’s wife, he poured into land, for not giving offspring to his brother .

What Does The Bible Say About Masturbation

Rev. Paul M. TurnerinSeeds of Hope

Love in ChristEric

Dear Eric,

Let me share some facts about masturbation.

1) Alfred Kinseyinterviewed thousands of men in the 1940s, and concluded that 95 percent masturbated. In 1960s, William Masters and Virginia Johnson raised that figure to 99 percent. Dr. Harold Litten, The Joy of Solo Sex.

Jackinworld conducted a survey among their readers. Results indicated that the average frequency of masturbation drops from 11 per week at age 11, to 5 per week above age 35. There are wide fluctuations in frequency from individual to individual. 84% of respondents had started to masturbate at or before the age of 13. Afterwards, 89% felt happy and relaxed 10% felt guilty 1% felt nervous. Among the very religious readers who had surfed their site 2 months or less, the percentage who felt guilty was 19%. We have a hunch that religious instruction does not cut down on the numbers of youth who masturbate. It does not reduce the frequency of masturbation. It only makes more of them feel more guilty.

Reference:

Some more conservative religious groups have condemned masturbation because it is done by one person and therefore cannot lead to babies. So it has been called an unnatural act.

The Meaning Of The Greek Words Akatharsia And Akathartos In The Christian Scriptures :

Early Christian Schisms – The Council of Nicaea – Extra History – #3

This word akatharsia, a noun, and akathartos, an adjective, appears in Romans 1:24, 2 Corinthians 12:21, and Galatians 5:19. It is often translated “uncleanness” in some Bible versions.

In the Hebrew Scriptures a person or a couple might become ritually unclean:

when a woman is menstruating,
when a man and a woman have engaged in sexual intercourse, or
when someone was too close to a dead body.

Jesus and his disciples regularly violated the Hebrew Scriptures’ laws regarding ritual uncleanness. For example, they did not wash their hands before eating — a shocking behavior to their fellow Jews. Jesus “enunciated the great principle that there is no ceremonial, but only moral and spiritual, uncleanness.” One is defiled by “the things that come out of his heart, evil thoughts, hatred, adultery, murder, etc.”One does not become unclean by the actions of his hands.

Again, some conservative Christian churches and ministries have expanded the term to include masturbation. Examples are RBC Ministries and the Mormon church. More details about akatharsia.

Clean And Unclean In The Bible

For some initial perspective, here is a partial list of things that can make someone ritually unclean:

  • Eating unclean animals

  • Having certain skin diseases

  • Molds and infestations in a house or clothing

  • Coming in contact with an animal corpse

  • Coming in contact with a human corpse ,

  • Women on their period

  • Women during childbirth

  • Coming into contact with anyone who has come into contact with any of the above, i.e. someone who is unclean

Notice that majority of these things naturally happen without any willful act by the person subsequently deemed unclean. These are normal, daily, monthly occurrences, or completely up to chance. They are a part of life.

Things Christian Men Need To Know About Masturbation

When God created man and woman, He knew what He was doing. He couldnt have been more detailed and intentional about creating us. This includes the parts of our bodies that bring us pleasure and make us feel good and yes, even really sexually good.

Most Christians know and accept what the Bible teaches about sex before marriage, adultery, and even homosexuality, but when it comes finding Gods position on sexual topics like masturbation, it isnt as clear cut.

Is masturbation a sin? Will masturbating keep me from going to Heaven? What about masturbation within the confines of marriage?

Here are five very important things to consider about masturbation, and what the Bible says about it, if youre a Christian:

Leviticus 15. Laws, rites, and sacrifices are revealed to purify those with discharge and other kinds of impurities. 5 And whoever touches his bed will wash his clothes He will also wash himself with water, and he will be unclean until evening.

Christian Wet Dreams: When Semen Is Sin

Masturbation

If we examine texts about wet dreams from medieval theologians, philosophers and physicians, we find that as the church grew in power, male leaders expressed serious anxieties over wet dreams. I mean they were terrified. They had stopped masturbating, stopped thinking about sex their waking, libidinal bodies were divinely suppressed, and yet, they couldnt stop lustful dreams! With wet dreams the male body becomes disobedientPlato called the genitals in general disobedientand everyone knew that the content of a dream is related to the content of the waking mind, so these monks had to keep their wet dreams secret. But they couldnt keep them a secret from themselves, or from God.

So, for example, Saint Augustine admits in his late fourth century Confessions that nocturnal emissions create a great gap between myself and myself, or between his body and his will. For Augustine, wet dreams spoke to all men, and of one thing alone of a fatal deposit of concupiscence left there by Adams fall. Concupiscence means desires. So you can tell that this is not just cold slime found on your leg in the morning.

Does The Bible Mention Masturbation

Masturbation as a term or a specific practice does not appear nor is it described explicitly in the Bible. The Bible is essentially silent as it relates to masturbation.

Some pastors and biblical commentators throughout history have incorrectly pointed to Onan . In this narrative, Judahs firstborn son married Tamar but died soon after leaving Tamar a widow. Judah than commanded his second son Onan to enter into a levirate marriage with Tamar, which is where the brother of the deceased man marries his brothers widow for purposes of an heir or offspring. However, as Onan and Tamar had intercourse, because Onan knew that the heir would not be his, he chose to ejaculate on the ground. As the narrative continues, the Bible says, And the thing which he did displeased the Lord therefore He killed him also .

Some point to this text to suggest that Onan received punishment by God because he ejaculated on the ground. Thus, they refer to this as a reference to masturbation. However, Onan died because he his unwillingness to enter into a levirate marriage with Tamar. He selfishly chose to disobey both God and his father Judah, which also left Tamar without an heir. Contextually, this is what displeased God and for which he was disciplined, not masturbation.

What About Phone Sex With My Spouse

Where there tends to be shame associated with masturbation, the marriage bed was designed as a place where shame does not exist. God designed sex as a gift and what an amazing gift it is! With that said, the marriage bed should be honored, cherished, and enjoyed as the gift it is . The marriage bed is a place to be visited and enjoyed often and it is the place where our souls intertwine, the place where unity happens a place where two become one . In other words, the marriage bed is a place for exploration, pleasure, unity, and delight.

So Is Masturbation A Sin Or Not

Pastor Kenneth Adkins | Donkey of the Day

Ephesians 5:3 says, “Among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity.” Thinking about how we have to conjure up or seek out sexual stimulation in order to masturbate, it’s pretty easy to see that we might fail that purity test.

Does masturbation or the things we do in order to be sexually stimulated glorify God ? If you aren’t fully certain that what you’re doing is something God would smile upon, then it is likely a sin .

Also, don’t forget that your body belongs to God . He gave it to you, and you really should take care of it as though you are taking care of it for Him by keeping it holy and pure .

Even though the Bible doesn’t specifically say that masturbation is a sin, there is absolutely no doubt that the actions which lead to masturbation are soaked in sin. Masturbation is almost always an action preceded by lustful thoughts, stimulating the body sexually, or viewing or reading pornographic materialor all of the above.
