What Does The Bible Say About Gossip

Gossip And Other Wicked Sins

Q& A with Pastor Dan: What Does The Bible Say About Gossip?

Paul mentions in the same sentence some of the wickedest sins of humanityanger, hostility, slander, quarreling, deceit, disorder, jealousyas he does gossip . Even worse, he mentions gossip alongside murder, strife, envy, maliciousness, malice, covetousness, evil, and all kinds of unrighteousness, in case he missed some things and once again in the same sentence. Its important to know that the inspired Word of God lists gossip among some of the most wicked, heinous sins in all humanity. Gossip has split churches, divided families, sunk ships, and separated close friends , taking them from being best friends to the worst of enemies. I know this sounds harsh, but we had to disfellowship someone from our church because she was gossiping about others, which turned out to be lies. She was slandering the church by bearing false witness, and in one Sunday school class, she actually said that we were teaching that what Hitler did was good, misrepresenting what the teacher actually said by taking it out of context or, better yet, ripping it out of context and having him say something that he actually never said. She even divided the church board by interrupting the meetings, talking during church services about other people, and constantly agitating and disputing the Sunday school teachers lessons.

What Does The Bible Say About Pornography

The Bible isnt shy about sexuality, but it seems to steer a healthy course between the worship of sex and ignorance of it.

Although access to it may be easier than ever, porn itself is not new. It even shows up in the Bible.

You might be surprised to learn that archaeologists have unearthed pornographic figurines from biblical times. Some of these come from the Baal cult, which for several centuries was the main rival for the hearts and minds of the ancient Israelites. In this context, much of the Old Testament calls the worshipers of Israels God to be different, to keep themselves pure from the sex-obsession of Baalism.

The Bible doesnt shy away from sexuality. It openly discusses sexual matters, describing scenes of love, lust, temptation, even sexual violence. Frankly, some parts of the Bible might be considered borderline pornographic. Yet it seems to steer a course between the worship of sex and ignorance of it.

The New Testament adds a focus on the concept of lustunhealthy desire. One apostle writes about the lust of the eyes, and Jesus equates a lustful look with adultery. Another passage describes how unhealthy desire gives birth to bad actions, with deadly results. This might be our closest biblical connection to the modern use of pornography. Isnt it, essentially, the cultivating of sexual desire?

Examples Of Gossip In The Bible

While the Bible does not offer examples of individuals who gossiped, it does offer teachers and disciples telling Christian groups to avoid gossiping. For example, James tells Christians to bridle their tongues and not to speak evil against one another . In addition, Paul spoke about expecting to find inappropriate behavior such as gossip or slander at the church in 2 Corinthians in verse 12:20.

Titus admonished the people to avoid gossip as well in verses 2:2-3, focusing on the people who held a position in the church and acted as an example to others. Both Proverbs and Psalms mention the necessity of avoiding misspeaking about others throughout their books, lamenting the necessity to keep our tongues bridled to honor God.

Finally, in Romans 1:28-32, Paul tells the church what a person going against the will of God looks like, And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know Gods decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Bible Verses About Speaking Negatively

Listening to and spreading gossip is just one danger of our tongue. The Bible talks about speaking negatively in general.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Ephesians 4:29

Unwholesome talk comes in all shapes and sizes. Can you relate to the struggle of controlling your tongue? Where does unwholesome talk become a trap for you? Jesus says we will give an account for every idle word spoken.

But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

Matthew 12:36-37

David understood this. May we use his prayer.

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord keep watch over the door of my lips.

Psalm 141:3

Instead Of Gossiping We Should:

Galatians 5:16 ~ This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. If gossiping is a product of letting our flesh rule us, then walking in the Spirit will keep us from telling the tales of others. When we walk in the Spirit love will cover their sins, meekness will prompt us to esteem them as better than ourselves, goodness will see the best in them, and temperance will help us filter our thoughts and words about them.

If I can enjoy a joke at the expense of another if I can in any way slight another in conversation, or even in thought, then I know nothing of Calvary love. Amy Carmichael

Lashon Hara Gossip In The Bible

Thats right! Gossip did not just start here in recent history! Its been a problem a long time!

In fact, it goes back to Torah .

Lashon hara literally means evil tongue or evil language. It is something that may be true but yet there is absolutely nothing to be gained or anything constructive in repeating it. It is unwholesome talk or a careless word spoken for no benefit.

For instance, if I see a friends husband out with another woman and I seek the counsel of a Pastor or Rabbi about how to handle the situation, that would not be lashon hara. That is done with good intention and for the purpose of seeking counsel and in an attempt to do the right thing.

However, if I run to another friend and repeat the information without any reason for doing so except to blab about it, that is lashon hara. It may be TRUE but there is no benefit in repeating it and can do great harm as well. You are being a simple babbler as my grandmother might say.

If it is NOT true and I am merely concocting a story that is known as motzi shem ra, or literally giving someone a bad name. The Hebrew word ra is bad or evil and we see this too in lashon hara.

Shem is name and motzi is to bring forth or give. Hamotzi is the blessing said over the bread because we thank God who brings forth bread from the earth.

So it is literally to give or bring forth a name that is bad or give a bad name!

So lets continue on after that brief Hebrew lesson!

So where does lashon hara occur in Torah?

Bible Verses About Gossip And Rumors

What Does The Bible Say About Gossip? | Mike Talks

We see rumors everywhere. They are in the media, on Facebook, and in our churches. Unfortunately, they are often in our own family. There isnt much we can do to change other peoples actions, but we can control ourselves.

A gossip betrays a confidence so avoid anyone who talks too much.

Proverbs 20:19

Begin with avoiding anyone who is spreading the rumors and drama. This can be a hurtful step, but separating ourselves from those who are creating the drama will dramatically reduce the stress in our lives.

But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices.

Colossians 3:8-9

Rid yourself of the rumors and filthy language. Be sure you do no add to it or engage in any way.

Does The Bible Talk About Homosexuality

This is one of the most controversial and personal topics people are exploring right now.

And we know many people have used the Bible to demonize and exclude others. To those whove felt excluded, we invite you to watch this apology.

Of the more than 31,000 verses in the Bible, fewer than 10 specifically reference homosexuality. We invite you to check them out in the links below. But instead of just reading individual verses and forming your ideas in isolation, we also suggest getting a bigger picture.

As you do this, youre likely to find a wider sexual ethic running through the Bible: that God is a fan of sex and all that it brings. Because of this, we find protections and prescriptions for sexual expression in the Bible. In fact, the New Testament offers several lists of barred behaviors that can hurt our relationship with both God and othersand two of these lists include references to certain homosexual activities. But even these descriptions are accompanied by a deep awareness of the gracious invitation of God.

You can find the prohibitions against specific homosexual acts in Leviticus 18 and Leviticus 20, among the many laws given to the ancient Jewish people. And in the New Testament, Romans 1 paints a big picture of broken relationships running amok, with certain acts again singled out. Yet Romans 2 offers a larger picturewith a clear caution to people who judge others negatively.

Whats The Difference Between Sharing And Gossiping

The difference between sharing and gossip is subtle but depends on the purpose of sharing the information. To determine if you are sharing instead of gossiping, answer these questions:

Am I lying or telling the truth?

Am I building the person up or tearing them down?

Did I talk to the other person about the problem?

Have I checked myself for a plank in my eye?

Why do I feel the need to share this information?

Will sharing this information improve the situation?

Gossiping is essentially sharing information with someone who does not need it about another person for the purpose of drawing ill attention. People like to do when others make a poor decision because it gives us the power to feel superior and in control of ourselves. However, gossip does the opposite it steals someone elses sense of trust and turns the gossiper into a vicious person willing to harm others for their own purposes and connects us to Satan, not God.

When sharing, our motives are pure. Sometimes negative things need to be shared but for the purpose of improving the situation, not to make it worse. Test your motives by asking yourself do you want the other person to know what you said about them. If the answer is no, its gossip. Also, if the information you plan to share is a heavy burden for you that you wish to unload with altruistic purpose, then it may not be gossip and might then be venting.

32. Ephesians 5:1 Follow Gods example, therefore, as dearly loved children.

What Does The Bible Say About Sex

A lot, actually. First of all sex is Gods idea.

Actually the first commandment God ever gives people is to be fruitful and multiply .

And the rest of the Bible isnt shy on the subject either. On several occasions, it tells of people having sex . Theres even a full book of the Biblethe poetic Song of Solomon dedicated to celebrating a romantic relationship in very intimate language.

Even with all this talk of sex, the Bible also offers some cautions and restrictions on sexual behavior. Why? Two key reasons are false worship and desire that becomes destructive.

The Old Testament shows the first followers of God living alongside other cultures that essentially worshiped sex. For example, folks called the Canaanites celebrated the mating of a sky god with an earth goddessand sometimes re-enacted it. Later, the followers of Jesus encounter similar religions throughout the Roman world. This is probably why so many biblical writers go out of their way to clarify that sex is not how they worship their God.

The Bible also suggests that destructive desires can lead to unforeseen injury. Which explains why some biblical writers do their best to urge readers to not let any sexual desire rule their life.

While the New Testament often prohibits fornication , it does so not because sex is a bad thing, but because it is such a good and wonderful thing, knowing that it should not be squandered, but given the full protections of a lifelong commitment.

The Negative Effects Of Gossip

Gossip has a negative effect on everyone involved as it can separate them from the will of God. Even more, the gossip may ruin someones reputation and change how other people view them with negative insight. Finally, gossip can break confidentiality if you promise the person to keep the information to yourself.

Gossip can also affect mental health to the person being gossiped about. The negative behavior can lead to stress and anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and in worse cases, suicide. The person gossiping may not be in control of other peoples responses, but their words set choices into action. Words really can hurt other people, unlike the popular saying we all heard as children, sticks and stones my break my bones but words will never hurt me.

35. Proverbs 20:19 One who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets Therefore do not associate with a gossip.

36. Proverbs 25:23 As surely as a north wind brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger!

A Prayer To Turn A Deaf Ear To Gossip

Lord,

Help me to guard my ears and my mouth. Let me operate in love and self-control so that I dont participate in the tearing down of other people. As David prayed in Psalm 19:14, Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

In Jesus name I pray,

Amen.

Why Are There So Many Bad Feelings About The Bible

Good question. And while some have issues with what the Bible actually says, others have problems with the people who quote it.

Before we begin, please watch the video for a long-overdue apology.

Okay. So there are a lot of people out there who believe the Bible is judgmental, inconsistent, ignorant, and old-fashioned. Their issue is with the Bible itself. Some of those people have read the Bible. Some havent. And some dont even want to, since some obnoxious Bible-beater has turned them off. Their issue is with Bible people.

Lets deal with the Bible issue first.

Can the Bible judge us at times? Yes. And thats not always fun. Sort of like a personal trainer pushing you to be your best self. But along with the judgment, theres a stronger message of love. The two actually go together. Is it old-fashioned? Well, its certainly old. But despite the fact that it was written by 40 or more people thousands of years ago, we still find great wisdom and fresh ideas in the Bible. But dont take our word for it. Look inside the Bible and see for yourself.

Now, to the Bible people issue.

We think theres a big difference between wielding the Bible as a sledgehammer and letting it lead us into an authentic interaction with God. Were aiming for the latter.

Whether your feelings about the Bible have been negative, positive, or apathetic, we invite you to get the whole picture by Looking Inside.
