The True Christianity Is In Our Hearts

What Does the Bible Say About Eating Pork

In verse 9, Paul says to be careful how you use your freedom. Just because you feel fine about it, doesnt necessarily mean it is right. You have to be aware of what others, who may be watching, are thinking. By your behavior you might cause someone else to stumble, or struggle in their faith or their Christian life. When this is the case, it might be good to refrain from anything that would affect someone else.

This is a good guideline for everything that we do in life, not just eating pork. 1 Corinthians 10:23 says that everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible, but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good but the good of others.

It may be alright to do many things but as Christians we have a responsibility to others so that we do not cause anyone else to stumble.

Is Eating Pork Unclean

Occasionally sincere Bible-believers will ask us whether the Bible does not say that pork is unclean, and therefore question whether Christians ought to eat it. Now thats a good question, as my brother-minister R.C. Sproul says. So lets go to the Bible and ask, is eating pork unclean?

One of the early names we considered for our ranch was Thousand Hills Ranch. The idea is from Psalm 50:10For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills . What a beautiful truth that is! The cattle on a thousand hills belong to God, not anyone else. He created them and they are His. And not only the cattle on a thousand hills, but all the cattle on all the hills in all the world belong to the Lord God. And not only all the cattle are His, but so are all the horses and chickens and sheep and goats and all the pigs. They are His, too!

And since all animals belong to God, we human beings have the privilege to eat them only because God has given us that privilege. And, as we look closely into the Bible, we see that God did indeed give mankind the privilege of eating foodwhich belongs to God. And so, when God created man, He said to himSee, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed: to you it shall be for food . But, you may ask, I see that God did not give mankind permission to eat meat only plants. Maybe were supposed to be vegetarians!

Are Christians Allowed To Eat Pork

This is Gods original plan but of all the things that a person might eat that the Bible says are forbidden, pork is really the most abominable. Pigs are scavengers and Christians should not eat pork whatsoever.

Ive got a little report here from consumer report which goes through saying 70% of all pork that they tested in the slaughterhouses is contaminated with serious bacteria that are harmful to your health.

They say that some of the bacteria that we found in 198samples proved to be resistant to antibiotics commonly used to treat people becausetheyre giving the pigs these antibiotics all the time. It is definitely notclean.

In the slaughterhouses, the brains are normally sterile butduring the slaughtering process, meat can become contaminated with bacteriafrom the animal skin, gut from the workers equipment or the environmentcontamination especially if processing lines run too fast.

In fact, they tell you in this article that you should be very careful not to store your pork next to anything else. Keep your uncooked pork away from other foods because it contains swimming parasites and bacteria.

Most Christians that eat pork have 30% higher chance that theyre going to get serious diseases as compared to vegetarians and those that eat the clean meat in general.

Pigs will eat virtually anything and admittedly they are intelligent and so are the dogs and were not supposed to eat them. The disease can be transferred from animal to animal.

What does the Bible say about eating pork?

The Bible says that eating pork is wrong because it is considered an unclean animal. God gave health rules in the Bible because He created the human body and knows what is best for it. In Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, God very clearly points out the clean and unclean animals, and pig is among the unclean animals. God made the big for the same purpose that He made the buzzardas a scavenger to clean up garbage.

Following Gods principles results in health. The Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive . You shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you .

The Bible says that anyone who eats pig meat and other unclean things that are an abomination will be destroyed at the coming of the Lord. Behold, the Lord will come with fire and by His sword the Lord will judge all flesh and the slain of the Lord shall be many. Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves eating swines flesh and the abomination and the mouse, shall be consumed together .

Why I Dont Eat Pig Meat

Q: I have an ongoing problem because Im living as a hypocrite. Im an animal lover but I eat meat. I dont eat veal or lamb because they are from young animals, but I eat meat, fish, fowl and eggs. Is there anything in the Bible that refers to this or to Christs personal practice? Did Jesus eat meat? Im aware that Im looking for absolution for eating meat, but I cant get rid of this conflict in my mind. As I say, it is hypocritical. I would never hunt or fish, but I eat what someone else kills to put meat on my table. Is killing and eating animals a sin in the eyes of God or Jesus? What would Jesus have said? From L

P.S. I contribute to many animal groups, especially to help farm animals and to ban dog racing, etc., but it doesnt erase the guilt.

A: In Genesis 1:29 God speaks to Adam,

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb-bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed to you it shall be for food.

In the second chapter of Genesis vegetarianism is re-affirmed as peoples spiritually proper diet. However, one tree in the Garden of Eden bore forbidden fruit,

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

The Old Testament Is Downright Hostile To Pork

The dietary laws in the Old Testament are absolutely and unambiguously against the eating of pork. Specifically, Leviticus 11 says that when it comes to land animals, God’s people can only eat meat from beasts who chew the cud and have split hooves. For example, beef is okay, as cows have split hooves and chew the cud, but pork is out, as pigs do not chew the cud. To this day, many Jews eschew pork, whether for cultural or religious reasons, according to Modern Farmer.

The New Testament, however, complicates things. In Acts 10, the Apostle Peter has a vision in which God tells him that he’s allowed to eat “unclean” animals . Theologian John Oakes writes in Evidence for Christianity that most Christians have taken the view that Peter’s vision is effectively a blank check for Christians to eat whatever they want, Jewish dietary laws notwithstanding. Similarly, writing in the Christian question-and-answer column Just Disciple, Karina Zolotarev points to Jesus’ teaching that says it’s not what goes into a person’s body that “defiles” him or her, but what comes out. In other words, Christians can eat pork and other “forbidden” foods.

Are Christians Supposed To Eat Pork

Although Christianity is also an Abrahamic religion, most of its adherents do not follow these aspects of Mosaic law and are permitted to consume pork. However, Seventh-day Adventists consider pork taboo, along with other foods forbidden by Jewish law.

What are the dangers of eating pork?

Eating raw or undercooked pork can also result in trichinosis, an infection of parasitic roundworms called Trichinella. While trichinosis symptoms are usually mild, they can become serious even fatal especially in older adults. To avoid parasitic infection, always cook pork thoroughly.

Can Christians Eat Shellfish

The prohibition of Leviticus 11 extends beyond swine to other animals from air and land -to even certain seafood including shellfish and other animals regarded as unclean.

Heres a partial list of unclean animals:

The camel, rock badger, rabbit, vultures, kites and buzzards, owls, hawks and cormorants, storks, herons and bats.

Also certain insects.

The Bible prohibits certain insects. That means it allows certain others.

Ive never been too excited about eating insects.

And snakes. Snakes? SNAKES?

To be honest, I dont find many of these animals very appealing for any of my eating plans. Do you?

But That’s Not The End Of It

Bible Forbids Eating Pork

The New Testament says more about pork, albeit indirectly, than just the passages cited above. As Grace Communion Seminary explains, much of the New Testament is given over to reconciling cultural issues between Christians who came from the Jewish tradition and those who came from the Greek tradition and had their own diets. Indeed, a council of early Christian leaders even convened to hash things out and decided that when it comes to eating, Christians should avoid eating meat sacrificed to idols and from blood to mitigate cultural conflicts between the two groups, as detailed in Acts 15.

But that is still not the end of it. Though for the majority of the world’s Christians, the conflict between Jewish and Gentile Christians worked itself out centuries ago, a handful of believers still stick to Jewish dietary laws for theological reasons that won’t be explained here. As The Chicago Tribune noted, examples of such Christians include Messianic Jews who want to restore Jewish tradition and worship in Christianity and Seventh-day Adventists, who actually strive towards a plant-based diet. Per Healthline, the latter group eschews pork and other “unclean” animals when they do eat animal products.

What Does Jesus Say About Eating

Christ declared all foods are clean for us to eat, stating that it is not food that defiles a man, but its the things that come from his heart that are more important. Interestingly he makes the point that if one believes certain foods are wrong to eat, then for that person it is wrong.

What does the Bible say about eating swine?

Jesus created the biblical food laws. This is the law of the animals and the birds and every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth . Eating swine is called an abomination .

Lets Go Back To Peters Objection In Acts : 9

Peter objects to the scene in his vision where the Lord is telling him these unclean animals are now OK to eat.

Its in Acts 10:9-16.

Acts Chapter 10 opens up with gentile Cornelius seeing avision of an angel telling him to look for Simon Peter, who has a message forhim.

For Jews in those days, it was against the Jewish law toassociate with gentiles!

It was quite a big change for Peter a lifelong observant Jew- to suddenly learn that two major prohibitions had been redeemed by the Living Savior 1) the dietary laws from Leviticus 11 and 2) the law that Jews should not associate with Gentiles.

Did Peter know the verse you are about to see?

At this point, Peter is still a young man, and a fisherman by trade.

Hes bright and capable and diligent.

But Peter is still learning, and there are things he doesnt know yet.

Apparently -at this stage of his young life- he doesnt know the verse you will soon see.

Pork is usually considered to be the quintessential American food. Many Americans see it as a favorite part of a traditional American meal. However, there is a lot of controversy about whether pork is healthy or not. Should pork be in your diet? The Bible has nothing to say about pork, so this is definitely a matter of personal choice. However, the Bible does make references to other foods that are bad to eat. In Matthew 15:26, the Bible tells us that pigs are unclean for meat. In Proverbs 30:35, it tells us that it is not beneficial to eat pigs. In Ezekiel 44:24, it says that consuming the meat of any unclean animals is a serious offense. So, should you eat pork? Thoughts On Is Eating Pork Unclean

“Is it a Sin for a Christian to Eat Pork?” With Doug Batchelor (Amazing Facts)
  • Fabricio,I appreciate your comment, and your question is the reason we posted this article. While in Isaiah, God was referring to those who were unclean , Jesus came to fulfill the law. The New Testament clearly teaches that those who are in Christ are no longer bound to the ceremonial law of Moses. A clear example is in Acts 15 in which the *believing* Pharisees said, It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses. To this, Luke records that the apostles replied: For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials: 29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell. Pork is not listed. As recorded in Acts 10-11, Peter is even confronted by God and told to kill and eat things that Peter considered unclean, but that God said He had cleansed. The ceremonial law, while a beautiful and meaningful shadow of things to come, is over. We are clean because of Christ, not because of what we eat or do not eat. Thanks for your feedback! Hope to see you at the farm some time!Jerica
