They came down and saw that the people they came out of Egypt with, had quickly rebelled against their God. Moses had the Levites, whom God had adopted to Himself, gird up with swords and see who wants to serve God or who wanted to keep the gods from Egypt.

Bible Verses About Who God Is

We can know that there is a God by observing the created world around us. One of the biggest questions in mans heart is, Who is God? We must turn to Scripture for the answer to this pressing question.

The Bible is totally sufficient for telling us all about who God is, how we can know Him, and how we can serve Him.

The hardhearted pharaoh, impudent and proud, asked, âWho is the Lord, that I should obey his voice ⦠? I know not the Lordâ . Many people today are just as ignorant of the God of the Old Testament as the pharaoh was. They regard Him as a being created by the minds of the ancients, a God of wrath and low religion who would destroy people with floods and plagues. Could this be the same God as the being of love in the New Testament revealed through the mortal ministry of Jesus Christ? Others contend that the Jehovah of Old Testament times was the same as God the Father in the New Testament. Why all this confusion? Who, really, was the God of Adam, of Enoch and Abraham, of Israel and Moses?

Development Of The Christian Canons

Development of the Old Testament canonDevelopment of the New Testament canonSt. Jerome in his StudyJeromeLatinVulgate

The Old Testament canon entered into Christian use in the Greek Septuagint translations and original books, and their differing lists of texts. In addition to the Septuagint, Christianity subsequently added various writings that would become the New Testament. Somewhat different lists of accepted works continued to develop in antiquity. In the 4th century a series of synods produced a list of texts equal to the 39, 46, 51, or 54-book canon of the Old Testament and to the 27-book canon of the New Testament that would be subsequently used to today, most notably the Synod of Hippo in 393 CE. Also c. 400, Jerome produced a definitive Latin edition of the Bible , the canon of which, at the insistence of the Pope, was in accord with the earlier Synods. With the benefit of hindsight, it can be said that this process effectively set the New Testament canon, although there are examples of other canonical lists in use after this time.

The New Testament writers assumed the inspiration of the Old Testament, probably earliest stated in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God”.

Some denominations have additional canonical holy scriptures beyond the Bible, including the standard works of the Latter Day Saints movement and Divine Principle in the Unification Church.

Jesus Is Lord: Scripture Meaning

Following the resurrection, the term Lord, being applied to Jesus, became more than an indication of devotion or respect. Stating, Jesus is Lord, became a way of recognizing Jesus divine standing.

References of Jesus as Lord started with Thomas declaration when Jesus arrived at the apostles after His resurrection: Thomas said to him, My Lord and my God! . From thereafter, the message of the Apostles was that Jesus is Lord, signifying that Jesus is God.

Peters sermon on the Day of Pentecost carried that idea: Let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah . Peter later declared this in the house of Cornelius, stating that Jesus is Lord of all . It is important to note that in Romans 10:9 Jesus lordship is connected to His resurrection: If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

The declaration Jesus is Lord indicates that Jesus is God. Jesus holds all authority in heaven and on earth . He is Lord of the Sabbath our only Sovereign and Lord and the Lord of lords .

What Does All This Mean

The consistent way that the authors refer to the angel of the Lord as both Yahweh and distinct from Yahweh not only helps us understand this mysterious figure, but it also makes a profound claim about the identity of Yahweh, namely, that Yahweh himself is a complex being.

Understanding the complex portrayal of the angel of the Lord prepares us to grasp the overarching story of Scripture in some significant ways:

1. This figure helps us make sense of Jesus claims.

It seems strange that Jesus would claim he was one with the Father and yet distinct as the Son . Yet these claims that sound confusing to modern readers fit in the same category as the portrait of the angel of the Lord.

2. This figure creates shelf space for understanding the Trinity.

This ancient and creative way of portraying Yahweh as a complex unity helps readers understand that Yahweh is a diverse yet unified community of love. This is foundational for understanding that perfect community of loveFather, Son, and Spiritthat we have come to call the Trinity.

3. This figure helps us know Gods character more.

What Is The Difference Between Lord Lord And Lord

Yahweh – LORD

If you have noticed, when you are reading your Bible in the King James Version , you may have frequently come across the word lord, but you may not have noticed that this word is written three different ways: all lower case letters , all upper case letters and only the first letter in upper case . Each of these styles of writing the word lord identifies different Hebrew words.

Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day

That is basically what Lord meansone possessing authority, power, and control. The Word of God describes Jesus as the head of the church, the ruler over all creation, and the Lord of lords and King of kings .

Credal Phrases In The New Testament

In Pauline Christianity, J.N.D. Kelly points out creed-like slogans attributed to Paul the Apostle in Galatians, 2 Thessalonians, Romans and 1 Corinthians, though they never formed a fixed, standard creed. The most popular and briefest was “Jesus is Lord” found in 1 Corinthians 12:3 Romans 10:9 and probably in the baptisms referred to in Acts 8:16 19:5 and 1 Cor 6:11 since their being described as “in the name of the Lord Jesus” certainly seems to imply that “the formula ‘Jesus is Lord’ had a place in the rite”. The phrase might be extended as “Jesus Christ is Lord” as in Philippians 2:11.

In the early days, the similar formula “Jesus is the Christ” was found, but this faded into the background when its original Messianic significance was forgotten. Of more long-term significance was the affirmation “Jesus is the Son of God”. These were expounded upon by passages such as 1 Corinthians 15:37 and Romans 1:34 which describe Christ’s work of salvation and the existence of witnesses to his resurrection and he goes on in the following pages to list another ten examples of passages which attach to the name of Jesus “selected incidents in the redemptive story”.

What Makes Jesus A Lord

Pin on Bible Verses

The realm of Christs reign covers everything that happens in heaven and on the earth. No onenot even those who deny His existencecan be free of His rule or outside His sphere of authority. Although Satan tries to convince us that liberty is found in doing what we want, true freedom is acquired only through submission to Christs loving lordship.

Even death cannot release anyone from the authority of Gods Son. He is Lord of both the living and the dead. All people must decide to either yield or rebel against Him, but they have the opportunity to make this choice only while they are still living. After death, they will acknowledge Christs lordship through accountability to Him. If we have not bowed the knee to Jesus in life, we will be forced to bend it in the judgment.

Have you submitted to Christs rule over your life? His authority causes anger or fear in individuals who have not yet yielded to Him, but those who have experienced His loving kindness trusted in His goodness and surrendered to His authority take comfort in knowing Him as the Lord of their lives.

The Power Of The Holy Spirit Changes Lives

Acts clearly states how to recognize someone that is full of the Spirit: You will be My witnesses . Love is a distinguishing mark of the disciples, while being a witness distinguishes those who are full of the Spirit. It does not matter how many spiritual experiences one may have, whoever does not testify of Christ does not show evidence of being filled by the Spirit.

If we analyze what Paul says in Galatians 3:2I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by believing what you heard? we realize that this is a rhetorical question no one receives the Holy Spirit based on what they do. We experience salvation freely there is no reason to relate to God differently in our experience with the Holy Spirit. It is also a grace-based experience. In the same way that we receive Christ without doubting whether He will enter our lives or not, we should receive the Holy Spirit by faith and believe that He will respond to our requests without delay.

Jesus skillfully expresses the essence of this experience: If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? .

Jesus Christ: The God Of This World

There was confusion in the minds of the later Jews, Jesusâ own people, regarding the identity of their God because they no longer understood their own scriptures. That is likewise the problem today with most of the Christian world. The mystery of understanding the identity of the God of the Old Testament arose in both cases because of wickedness and the loss of many plain and precious truths from the scriptures. By contrast, Jesus said that life eternal consisted of gaining a full knowledge of the Father and the Son . In the final analysis the individual comes to know the true God through experiences that train him to be like Him, and thus he understands, or knows, Him .

All scriptures point to Christ.

Jehovah Or Christ Is The God Of The Old Testament

Although for many it seems a paradox, Jehovah of the Old Testament was none other than the Son of God, Jesus Christ. He created the world under the authority and direction of God the Father. Later, Jehovah came to earth as the Savior and Redeemer of the world. This truth is one of the most misunderstood doctrines in the history of the world, despite the fact that the Old Testament and the other standard works are filled with evidence to support it.

Before looking at the scriptural evidence, it may be wise first to better understand the names and titles for God the Father and His Only Begotten Son. Generally, two Hebrew words for God are used throughout the Old Testament. These are Elohim and Jehovah, as it is presently pronounced.

Jehovah was the premortal name-title given to the Firstborn Son of God. He is now referred to as Jesus Christ. The meaning of the name Jehovah was explained by Elder Talmage:

âJehovah is the Anglicized rendering of the Hebrew, Yahveh or Jahveh, signifying the Self-existent One, or The Eternal. This name is generally rendered in our English version of the Old Testament as Lord printed in capitals. The Hebrew, Ehyeh, signifying I Am, is related in meaning and through derivation with the term Yahveh or Jehovah.â

Elder James E. Talmage explained the special significance Elohim has for Latter-day Saints:
