Where Is Lazarus In The Bible

The Other Second Life And Death Of Lazarus

Lazarus Is Raised from the Dead

Here’s the thing: all of those Lazarus relics spread out all over France might be the wrong Lazarus, whoops. The whole tradition of Lazarus and his sisters even going to France might be a retcon to explain the presence of Lazarus relics in Marseilles, which, as the Catholic Encyclopedia explains, probably actually belong to the fifth century saint Lazarus, bishop of Aix, who did at least spend a little time in Palestine, which probably helped lead to the confusion. The tradition of Lazarus in France doesn’t pop up until about the 13th century a much older tradition is that held by the Greek Orthodox Church, which, as Relics Hunter explains, agrees that Lazarus was forced to flee Judea, but instead of going to France, Lazarus went to the island of Cyprus, where he encountered Saints Paul and Barnabas. There he was consecrated as the first bishop of the city of Kition, which is known today as Larnaca.

In Orthodox tradition, which calls him Lazarus the Four Days Dead, Lazarus is said to have lived in Cyprus for 30 more years, during which he never again smiled due to the horrors he had seen in the realm of the dead, except when he saw someone angrily smash a pot, at which he laughed, saying, “The clay smashes the clay.” Lazarus subsequently died a second time at age 60 in the city of Kition.

The Biblical Account Of Lazarus

Although the raising of Lazarus from the dead is arguably one of Jesus’ most famous and impressive miracles, the story only appears in one out of four Gospels. The only telling of the Lazarus narrative occurs in chapter 11 of the Gospel of John, the Gospel most different from the other three. John’s Gospel is structured around a series of signs and miracles performed by Jesus leading up to his own death and resurrection, with the story of Lazarus foreshadowing Christ’s power over the grave.

The biblical narrative explains that Lazarus is the brother of Mary and Martha, two sisters from Bethany who had previously appeared as followers of Jesus. Lazarus becomes ill, and word is passed along to Jesus that his friend is dying. Rather than hurrying to help, however, Jesus and his disciples stay where they are for another couple of days. The disciples, as ever, don’t understand what Jesus has in mind, namely, to prove the temporary nature of death. When they finally return to Bethany, Lazarus has been dead and buried for four days. This leads to what is famously the shortest verse in the Christian Bible: “Jesus wept.” Jesus tells the mourners to roll the stone away from the tomb entrance and then commands Lazarus to come forth. And wouldn’t you know it? He does, all wrapped up like a mummy but otherwise good to go.

A Secret Narrative Of A Lazarus

Although the Gospel of John is the only account of the resurrection of Lazarus within the canonical Bible, the other Gospels include similar stories. For example, the Gospel of Mark chapter 5 records a story in which Jesus raises a 12-year-old girl from the dead after he is delayed from coming to heal her while she is still alive. This story is retold in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 9 and Luke chapter 8. Luke chapter 7 also records Jesus raising a widow’s son from the dead when he encounters his body being carried out of the city. If you consider the Bible a work of literature rather than a record of history, an argument could be made that these earlier Gospels influenced the later narrative of Lazarus in the Gospel of John.

One other account that is arguably even closer to the story of Lazarus comes in the extremely controversial work known as Secret Mark, which is allegedly an expanded version of the Gospel of Mark that exists today only as a few quotes from a letter that might be a forgery. The surviving quotes, however, tell the story of Jesus raising a young man from the dead after being begged by the man’s sister. The youth emerged from his tomb wrapped in linen, and the two spend the night together, with Jesus teaching him the mysteries of God’s domain.

Who Was Lazarus He Was A Friend To Jesus And A Brother To Mary And Martha

Bible Stories Lazarus

Lazaruss story appears in an account in John 11:1-44, when a messenger shows up where Jesus was ministering and requests Jesus come immediately to the home of a sick man. Lazarus lived in a nearby town, Bethany, two miles southeast of Jerusalem and was the brother of Martha and Mary.

Jesus had previously visited the three siblings and had enjoyed the familys hospitality. His sister, Mary, would sit at the Masters feet and listen to his words. Martha, Marys sister was the one who complained to Jesus that her sister needed to help her in the kitchen .

When Jesus received the invitation, the messenger told Jesus that Lazarus, He whom you love is ill. This phrase, He whom you love, is significant. Yes, Jesus loved all he came in contact with, but the words hints at how Jesus and Lazarus were true friends. He had visited with Lazarus and his sisters in their home and broke bread with them.

And it may have been because of that very closeness that Jesus decided to use his relationship with Lazarus to showcase his power. So, instead of racing to his friends bedside, he stayed two more days where He was before deciding to go to Bethany and awaken His friend.

The Keepers Of The Law Are Its Corrupters

In verse 15, Jesus indicted His opponents as playing before the wrong audience, according to the wrong standards or rules. In verses 16-18, Jesus accuses those who prided themselves as the custodians of the Law as being its corrupters:

16 The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law. 18 Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Jesus began by referring to the fact that the former dispensation had ended with John the Baptist, and that at His appearance there was inaugurated a new age, a new dispensation . This new dispensation was welcomed by many, in fact, Jesus said, men were pushing and shoving to get into this kingdom. Men were violently trying to force their way in. This, then, was regarded as a welcome change.

The Old Testament prophets thus had much to say about the heart issues of life. Gods revelation in the Old Testament was not seeking mere outward conformity, but inward conformity to the will of God. No one portrays this heart better than David, and David confessed that the source of his heart for God was the Law of God .

The Wrong Judge And The Wrong Standard

In response to these scoffers, Jesus did not bother pointing out that the Pharisees were really lovers of money. The reason is, I believe, that Jesus was interested in the source of their problem, not just in symptoms. Loving money was a serious problem, but it was not the root of their problem. In verses 15 Jesus exposed the root problemThe Pharisees sought approval from the wrong person, on the wrong basis:

15 He said to them, You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable17 in Gods sight.

The underlying problem of the Pharisees was that they were seeking their approval from the wrong source, and they were seeking to be judged according to the wrong standard. They were striving to be justified by men, and their standard had to be that which men could see and evaluateoutward appearances.

It is God, however who justifies, and not men. God does not judge on the basis of outward appearance, but He knows and bases His judgment on what is in mans heart:

But the LORD said to Samuel, Do no look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart .

Gods standards differ greatly from mans, indeed, they are the exact opposite. Those things which men highly esteem, Jesus said, are an abomination to God .

Is There More Than One Lazarus In The Bible

Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

There are two different persons by the name Lazarus in the Bible. The word Lazarus was mentioned in Luke and John.

The rich man and the poor Lazarus Luke

Luke 16:20-31 contains the parable of the rich man and the poor Lazarus. This was only a parable used to emphasize a point which is found in verse 31: And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Many facts make it clear that this is a parable. A few are as follows:

  • Abrahams bosom is not heaven .
  • People in hell cant talk to those in heaven .
  • The dead are in their graves . The rich man was in bodily form with eyes, a tongue, etc., yet we know that the body does not go to hell at death. It is very obvious that the body remains in the grave, as the Bible says.
  • Men are rewarded at Christs second coming, not at death .
  • The lost are punished in hell at the end of the world, not when they die .

Parables cannot be taken literally. If we took parables literally, then we must believe that trees talk!

How Did People Respond To The News Of Lazarus

Lazarus become so ill that his sisters sent for Jesus. The story of the death of Lazarus is found in John 11:1-12:9. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was unwell, he stayed put for two more days. He didnt rush off to heal his friend or even head to a town closer to his friend. He simply stated that this illness was for the glory of God and would not lead to death. His words should have assured and comforted his friends. His absence probably worried the sisters. They had seen many miracles and knew Jesus had Gods power, so this should have helped them trust Jesus.

No further news came before Jesus announced that Lazarus had died, and he wanted to go to him. He told the disciples he needed to awaken Lazarus from sleep. Jesus knew and loved the family. His sister Mary had washed and anointed the feet of Jesus. Finally, he headed to Bethany. The reaction of people involved with Lazarus and Jesus reflected human responses. Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus to help them but gave up waiting once Lazarus died. They allowed the anointing and wrapping of burial cloths and placed Lazarus in the tomb. They lost hope that Jesus could help.

Who Was Lazarus Jesus Raised Lazarus From The Dead

Then after Jesus grieved, He went to the tomb and called to his dead friend, Lazarus, come out. Immediately Lazarus appeared out of the tomb. Jesus chose Lazarus to demonstrate His power as he foreshadowed what would happen to Himself on Easter.

This powerful incident upset the Pharisees and Chief Priests who felt they were losing a grip on their people. They were concerned that this man who did signs and wonders would cause problems with the Romans. It was right after this miracle that these evil leaders plotted to kill Jesus, and as the Bible tells us, they were successful in crucifying Him.

Most likely, Lazarus lived years after Jesus died to always carry the mark of a resurrected man. . What an honor for Lazarus to not only be resurrected from the dead but to also be the last major miracle Jesus ever preformed. Lazarus must have spent the rest of his life telling the story to all who would listen. Those who hated Jesus despised his story, but those who loved Him had resurrection hope in the form of a man named Lazarus.

Moral Of Lazarus And The Rich Man Parable

The rich man incorrectly saw his worldly wealth as proof of Gods love and blessing. Also, he believed the impoverished, like Lazarus, were cursed by God. However, as the apostle James advised, You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter . Not only do fortunes not get one into heaven, but they have the potential to separate a person from God like few other things. “but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” . It is surely not impossible for the wealthy to enter heaven , but Scripture is plain that it is very troublesome .

Faithful disciples of Christ will not ignore the suffering of the poor like the rich man in this parable did. Jesus told us that when we show mercy to the poor and help our neighbors in need, we are actually ministering to the Lord Himself. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”. Christians are known by the righteous fruit they yield, not the worldly acquiring of wealth. If we are rich, we are to use that wealth for the glory of God and the love of our neighbor.
