What Does The Bible Say About Sin

What Is The Meaning Of Transgression

What is Sin and What Is Iniquity? What does the Bible say About Sin? What is a sin?

The Greek word for transgression in 1 John 3:4 is anomia, which is a combination of a, meaning without or against, and nomos, meaning law. So the literal meaning of anomia is without law or against law. The New King James Version translates this word as lawlessness .

So the apostle John defined sin as transgression of the law . Essentially, sin is making a decisionor living a lifestylethat misses the mark and violates the law of God.

This basic definition of sin as being a transgression of the law is also found in the Old Testament.

The Old Testament was written in the Hebrew language, and the Hebrew words for transgression and transgress reveal a clearer understanding of sin. The Hebrew word for transgress is abar, meaning to cross over. It can also mean to turn away . The Hebrew word for transgression is pesha, which means rebellion or revolt or sin .

Consider 2 Chronicles 24:20, The Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, Thus says God: Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper?

A very encouraging scripture states: Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered . The Hebrew word for sin here is chataah, which means an offense . So when our transgressions and sins are forgiven, that means our rebellion and revolt against God is removed from us.

What Is Gods Anger Like

The biblical authors want us to see that Gods anger is always a response to human betrayal and evil, and its expressed through handing humans over to the logical consequences of their decisions. In other words, Gods anger is expressed by giving humans what they want, or at least, what theyve chosen.

The Expiation For Sin

Expiation is the act of making satisfaction or atonement for a crime or fault. God, because of His nature, not only demands that sin be punished but He also has provided for the sinners restoration to fellowship with Himself. It is at this point where the death of Christ enters the scene. God could not be satisfied until sin had been fully atoned for. The Bible teaches that by the sufferings and death of Christ, the acceptable Substitute was provided for the sin of man, thereby making His sufferings and death to be vicarious, that is, in the room and stead of the sinner.

Expiation means that our sins were laid upon Christ. The LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all . This is what the nation Israel will acknowledge when Christ comes to earth, but it is true of the whole human race. Man substituted his own will for Gods will when he sinned God substituted His own Son to atone for mans sin. So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many . Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree . . . .

Our Response To Jesus Sacrifice

It is amazing the forgiveness and freedom we can have from sin through Jesus. We have a chance to respond to this message one way or another.

Those who are far from Christ are stuck in their sins, they cannot escape, and instead, they travel further down the path of sins.

When we become Christians we acknowledge who Jesus is and what he has done, we put our faith in him and confess our sins.

Forgiveness of our sins comes when we admit what we have done, and we are cleaned as described in Romans.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

Only through Jesus can we receive forgiveness of sins and can be saved from death, instead we are welcomed into eternal life.

Without Christ, forgiveness has no power it is only through our faith in Jesus and what he did on the cross.

Living on earth means that we will struggle with sin, and as Christians, it can be a spiritual battle.

Being a Christian also means that we do have help from the Holy Spirit and we are not fighting against our sinful nature alone.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

As Christians, we have an obligation as children of God to continually work against our sinful nature and instead aim to be more like Christ.

It is important to be aware of what sin is because we need to be prepared for our struggles with sin.

Transgression: Choosing Wrong Instead Of Right

What is sin? Well the Bible says in 1 John 3:4 " Whosoever committeth ...

More than just having a broken and twisted nature inside of us, transgression is the sin that is a product of our iniquity.

Transgression is when we know right and wrong, and we choose wrong.

Not only do we choose wrong, it is intentional.

When we disregard authority and do our way, it is intentional, and a transgression.

When looking at many characters throughout scripture we can realize that even those who pursued after God and were commended for their faith fell short.

Jesus alone is the only man to walk the earth without sin.

Samson for example grew up knowing rules that he had to follow that included not touching dead animals or cutting his hair.

These were very strict guidelines that were given to him since birth, and even knowing these and knowing their consequences he broke the rules anyway.

He then experienced the consequences, we as humans are broken, but we know through Jesus we have hope even in our transgressions.

God used Samson even after he had sinned, even despite our sinful nature and transgressions we have committed God can still use us if we let him.

Is Dating A Non

In Romans 3:23, God tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. This verse means we are born sinners, and none is exempt from this sinful nature. We also sin when we disobey and displease God. And most importantly, we sin when we prefer another over God.

If two people have varying faiths, principles, and beliefs, there can be no profound union of minds and souls. From the beginning, there will be a gap and unfamiliarity. You may find yourself comprising your personal beliefs to accommodate your partners. When we focus too much on the other person, we shift the focus away from God.

A Christian relationship that takes precedence over God is also a form of idolatry. Our worldly needs and wants, even when not expressly defined as sins, are shown by the fact that we are willing to jeopardize who we are and what we believe in for another person. You are engaging in sin if your desire for human company outweighs your passion for God. As for who youre taking out, it is unquestionable. Your treasure is God, so you must always choose Him.

What Does The Bible Say About Tattoos

The Bible does not say anything about tattoos specifically, but it does speak to the issue of body modification in general.

Leviticus 19:28 says, You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD.

So while the Bible does not forbid tattoos specifically, it does forbid any kind of body modification that is done for the purpose of mourning the dead.

The Truth About Dating A Non

Most Christians want to know what the Bible says about dating a non-Christian. Many of them wonder if it is a sin to date one.

Can you date someone from a different religion? We have all been asked this question at one point in our dating lives. However, the way we answer this simple question could have a significant impact on our lives.

At first, dating a non-Christian may appear to be a worthwhile and wonderful goal to share the gospel. But it could also raise the question of whether or not the other person is indeed being led to Christ by your efforts in the process of dating.

God’s Perspective On Suicide

Is Cussing a Sin?

The following is a true story about a Christian man who committed suicide. The experience lends an interesting perspective on the issue of Christians and suicide.

The man who had killed himself was the son of a church staff member. In the short time he had been a believer, he touched many lives for Jesus Christ. His funeral was one of the most moving memorials ever conducted.

With more than 500 mourners gathered, for nearly two hours, person after person testified how this man had been used by God. He had pointed countless lives to faith in Christ and shown them the way to the Father’s love. Mourners left the service convinced that what had driven the man to commit suicide had been his inability to shake his addiction to drugs and the failure he felt as a husband, father, and son.

Although his was a sad and tragic ending, nevertheless, his life testified undeniably of Christ’s redemptive power in an amazing way. It is very difficult to believe that this man went to hell.

The fact is, no one can truly understand the depth of someone else’s suffering or the reasons that could drive a soul to such desperation. Only God knows what is in a person’s heart . Only the Lord knows the extent of pain which might bring a person to the point of suicide.

As Far As The East Is From The West

Because of Christ, our sin does not have to separate us from God. In fact, when we confess it and believe in him, we are cleansed from our unrighteousness and called sons and daughters. Be encouraged from God’s word with these verses and commentary adapted from the ESV Study Bible.

Galatians 5:1921

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Works of the flesh means actions flowing out of fallen human nature and its desires. Apart from the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, these are the actions toward which sinful humans instinctively gravitate. These are evidences of a desire to be in touch with the spiritual realm through humanly invented means: they supposedly have God as their ultimate object, but they reject the revealed way in which he should be worshiped. Because Christ is the way, and the truth, and the life , all other ways to God are false.

The present participle refers to those who make a practice of doing such things, as a pattern of life. Their outward conduct indicates their inward spiritual status: that they are not born of God, do not have the Holy Spirit within, and are not Gods true children.

Is Dating In The Bible

The Bible does not explicitly address the topic of dating. In the Christian community, however, dating is among the most discussed and debated topics. Many questions stem from the differences between modern dating methods and those used in biblical times. Even though the biblical accounts of are set in a different time and place compared to the present, Scripture still contains essential truths for a godly union.

A godly relationship is characterized by both partners mutual pursuit of the Lord. In Genesis 2:18, God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. Here, Gods intention for companionship between man and woman came to light.

Throughout the Bible, there is a lot of discussion about how relationships progress. Numerous marriages were predetermined by God or left to His guidance. God revealed to Abrahams servant how to bring Isaac and Rebekah together. Joseph and Marys union fulfilled Gods purpose.

Even in marriages set up by men, God allowed them to take place. Such a union came about solely as a result of His will. God also explicitly selected a man and a woman for the role of husband and wife. Ultimately, the destination and intention of dating are whatever God wills.

Definition Of Sin In Christianity

The Christian definition of sin is purposely disobeying the rules of God . The Bible says, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools…” . God commands us to follow moral law and has given every human a conscience for intuitively knowing right from wrong.

What Is Original Sin

what

While the term “original sin” is not expressly stated in the Bible, the Christian doctrine of original sin is based on verses that include Psalm 51:5, Romans 5:12-21 and 1 Corinthians 15:22. As a result of Adam’s fall, sin entered the world. Adam, the head or root of the human race, caused every man after him to be born into a sinful state or fallen condition. Original sin, then, is the root of sin that taints the life of man. All humans have adopted this sin nature through Adam’s original act of disobedience. Original sin is often referred to as “inherited sin.”

Whose Will Is Most Important

Christ’s teaching helps us understand why it is sin not to do what we know we should do. It boils down to whose will is most important in our lives: Is it our will, doing what we want to do? Or is it God’s will, doing what He thinks is most important?

Not doing what we know is right is putting our will ahead of God’s. It demonstrates to God that we don’t have the desire or character to put His will ahead of our own. It shows we are unwilling to completely surrender ourselves to Him. This is why it is sin: We put ourselves before God, our will before His will.

James elaborated on the requirement that we do good deeds. He asked several basic questions about our faith: “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? What good is it? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” .

James says such faithfaith without godly worksis useless, worthless. Such faith is of no lasting value because it doesn’t change the person, nor does it help others just to hear the words “Be warm and filled” when they’re cold and hungry.

The Explanation Of Sin

What is sin? When one seeks the answer to this question in the many and varied definitions of men he is left somewhat confused. There is a difference between the way God describes and explains sin, on the one hand, and the way, on the other hand, that men describe and explain sin. A certain minister excused bad behavior by accounting for it in terms of infantile environment, traumatic experiences, psychological complexes and the like. And then he added, After preaching for fifty years I cannot help feeling that the church harps far too much on sin.

Now where does a man get such ideas? Certainly not from Gods revelation to man as we find it in the Bible. This same minister, who calls himself The Christian Agnostic, also said, Pauls words that through one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin can be dismissed as nonsense. Well, to such blasphemy I can only reply that God knows the thoughts of men and is able to answer their questions before they are asked. God tells us in His Word what sin is. But when any man exalts the human mind to the place of deity and goes so far as to rule God out altogether, that man is on the brink of destruction. The Bible condemns human intellect as the supreme court.

This is a valuable listing of the words and their root meanings however, I would like to expand one or two of the ideas.

What Does The Bible Say About Sickness Being A Result Of Sin

Youve been sick before I guarantee it. You might be sick right now. Im sure your loved ones have had their share of sickness as well. You probably have loved ones who have suffered or passed away from sicknesses and disease, or there might be someone you love who is currently sick. But what does the Bible say about sickness? More specifically, what does the Bible say about sickness being a result of sin? Lets found out.

First, let us define sickness. For the purposes of this post, we will use the word sickness in a general and broad sense to describe any state or instance of being ill. Sickness can mean being in the state or condition of illness. That could be having a cold, the Flu, cancer, HIV/AIDS, or anything else that is abnormal for a healthy human being. But sickness can also mean instances of sudden ailments such as having a stroke, a heart attack, or anything other event that would not be normal for a healthy human being. Sickness is real and both Scripture and experience confirm this. I state that because there is a Christian group which has existed for many years who believe and teach that sickness is not real, but an illusion. The proponents and adherents of Christian Science believe such, and that belief is demonstrably false and destructive.¹

What Does the Bible Say? is a question and answer series which seeks biblical answers to pressing questions.
