Whether your personality is predisposed to worry more, or youre just going through a more anxious season in your life, hopefully this study helps provide encouragement as well as practical examples of how to work on this with Gods help. God put a lot of good material about worry and anxiety in the bible!

When it comes to encouragement in this area, and when Im really struggling with a feeling of anxiety, I often go back to one of my all-time favorite bible verses: For we know that all things work together for good to those who love God . If we do what we can and then we take everything else to Him and ask for His help, then we can feel confident that everything is happening for a reason. God is in control.

How Can We Not Worry

It is easy enough to say dont worry but I have found that to be so much easier said than done. Simply to command dont worry just doesnt seem enough, does it? After all, if I tell you not to think of a pink elephant, whats the first thing you do?

Right. We need something to replace that with something else to do with those frets and fears. We need something on the positive side, if we are not to worry, what is our alternative?

The Word of God gives us that answer. Each time we are told to not worry, to not be anxious, we are indeed taught what to choose instead. Trust God. Trust Christ Jesus.

But in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus .

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you .

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you .

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy .

And the promises of Jesus include:

Peace I leave with you my peace I give you. I do not give to your as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid .

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls

How Does Worry Affect Us

I Am a Worrier, What Does The Bible Say About Worrying?

The word typically translated as worry or anxious in the New Testament is merimnao , and it simply means to be anxious about. Its translated worry in the New King James mostly, while the King James tends to prefer take no thought for or do not care for. This word is whats used in some of the more well-known verses on this subject, such as Matthew 6 and Philippians 4. Lets dig into that passage in Matthew for starters:

Its interesting that Jesus spent such a focused passage on the subject of worrying . He clearly tells us three different times not to worry, and then lays out several reasons why.

First, God knows what you need, and takes care of each part of His creation. Second, it does absolutely no goodworrying doesnt solve anything. And third, each day has enough challenges on its own and theres no need to borrow trouble from tomorrow. And He clearly states that worry is a faith issue.

If faith is the evidence of things not seen, but instead hoped for and believed, then worry is faiths opposite, its dark twin. Worry is the evidence of things not seen, but feared and believed.

Thats an important thing to rememberjust like someones faith is their reality despite lack of visible evidence, so are their worries. Thats why they can eat away at us even though rationally we know we shouldnt let them have such an effect.

It also somehow feels very relatable and human.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

What Does The Scriptures Say About Worrying

There is much that the Scriptures say about worrying. The one thing we are sure of is that God is always in control. In the face of challenging situations, remember that God is still on the throne. The Scriptures tell us that He is working out things for the good of those who love and trust in Him. Jeremiah 29:11-12 says, I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for. Then you will call to Me, and I will answer you.

How can we overcome worry?

It is clear that worrying should not be part of a believers life. The question now is how can we overcome worrying? The answer is found in 1 Peter 5:7, and reads cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Behold, God is not pleased to see us carrying around the weight of problems and burdens. In this Scriptural verse, God is clearly telling us to give Him all our worries and concerns because He is willing and able to help us. God wants to be in-charge of handling all our problems because He is able and He cares for us. The Bible tells us that God is concerned about everything that happens to us. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving, all-caring, and has the authority to rule over every situation in our lives.

What Jesus Said About Worry

What Does The Bible Say About…Fear, Anxiety, and Worry? – Ep. 3: WTBS | Impact Video Ministries

Jesus has plenty to say about worrying, so I will share some of his thoughts, followed by my comments.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Matthew 6:25

You have life, so dont waste your mental energy on peripheral issues such as food and clothing.

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:27

Worry accomplishes absolutely nothing, so dont do it.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Instead of wasting your time with worry, do something practical and effective: Seek the Kingdom of God and righteous living. When you get your priorities straight, God promises to give you everything you need.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34

We are prone to wearing ourselves out worrying about stuff that hasnt happened yet and may never happen. Reality is that the things we dread and fear are seldom as bad as we imagine they will be.

Bottom line: If you deal with problems as they come along without allowing your imagination to run rampant on what may happen, you will always have the ability to cope.

Sure. The Bible is very practical, so lets dig a bit more.

One of the defining sins of our culture is worry. Sometimes we call it worry. Other times we call it anxiety. Sometimes it is referred to as fear. A more recent label is stress or being stressed out. There are many different ways people deal with worry. Sometimes we distract ourselves with incessant entertainment. Some seek counseling or therapy. More and more people use prescription drugs and psychiatry. Some even resort to alcohol or illegal drugs as a way to deal with their anxiety and worry.

Is there a better way to deal with stress and fear? Does the Bible give a prescription for overcoming worry? Of course it does! In Matthew 6:25 Jesus commanded us not to worry about the needs of this life. Jesus said, For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Birds work hard. The average bird eats an eighth of their body weight every day. We must work hard also but ultimately God will provide for His people.
