What Is The First Commandment In The Bible

Obeying The 1st Commandment

The First Commandment: What Is Our Greatest Priority?

You, me, or no human could ever fulfill this command, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” That’s troubling, isn’t it?! Adam and Eve blew our one opportunity to follow God perfectly. All of us since then have been born with a fallen, sinful nature, separated from God . Here’s the Good News. God had a plan for us to reunite with Him. The plan has been carried out, reaching its pinnacle when Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose to heaven. People needed someone to live perfectly and become the human sacrifice for our sins – all of them. God demanded a perfect human sacrifice to appease his wrath.God sent his Son to come to earth to fulfill this commandment, i.e. all of his commandments. Jesus did that perfectly and fully. He was then sacrificed on the cross and later rose from the dead. Jesus obeyed the First Commandment. You haven’t and never will fulfill it because of your sinful nature .Fortunately, because of God’s beautiful, amazing grace a plan of redemption was fulfilled. He loves you, even though you’re born bad and commit sins against God . He does, however, demand a response from you, and holds you accountable for obeying it .Your Fruit of the Spirit Response to the 1st Commandment:

Jesus was asked about the most important commandment, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and first commandment” .

Kaplan eventually sold the stone to an American, Rabbi Saul Deutsch, who took it to the US and put it on display at his Living Torah Museum in Brooklyn, New York. Described as a National Treasure by Israel, its export was approved under a special permit issued in 2005 by the Israel Antiquities Authority .

The First Commandment Reminds Us Of Gods Greatness And How We Should Respond

The First Commandment is a reminder to focus on the awesome power and majesty of our Creator God. Gods power was on display when He thundered these commandments from Mount Sinai.

Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off .

Respect and awe of Gods power is not a bad thing. Moses told the people the result that our loving Creator wanted: And Moses said to the people, Do not fear for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin .

Wise King Solomon explained, The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction .

And Jesus Christ put things in perspective for His disciples: And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell . We humans tend to fear other people we can see and forget the Almighty God we cant see.

The right type of fear of God is not terror or torment, but reverence and deep respect that recognizes Gods almighty power and puts God first. But Christ followed this up with a discussion of our awesome Gods purpose and love for us. The God who notices every sparrow that falls and who knows the number of hairs on our head tells His faithful followers, Do not fear therefore you are of more value than many sparrows .

How To Love God First Have No Other Gods Before Me

I am the God who led you out of Egypt therefore, you shall have no other Gods before me. With the whole exodus story as the context for this commandment, we can hear it this way. Dont worship some fake deity such as the sun god Ra who sanctioned your slavery. That is, dont fall for some belief system that degrades the sacred worth of another human being. Furthermore, dont be duped by a religion that would say the few should prosper while the masses suffer.

The first commandment reminds us to make this liberating God the foundation of our lives. The commandment is a reminder of everything this story has told us about God. God hears the cries of those in bondage and he responds by sending ordinary people, like Moses, to demand an end to the suffering. This is the God who provides a way out of no way and provides during the wilderness times of life. God who promises to go with us wherever we go.

When you put this faith first when you have this at the forefront of your mind something very hopeful and positive. Putting the God of the Exodus first means that you have a perspective on life that will keep you from dwelling in the pit of despair. When you put no other priorities above these principles that we learn in Exodus, you will be the kind of person who looks out for those who are being neglected and who dont have the opportunity. You will find hope and perseverance to face the obstacles in your life.

The First And Greatest Commandment

10 Commandments by lindsay berube

Jesus obeyed every law of God and that includes the Ten Commandment and speaking of them, He said You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment . The Second Commandment, next in priority, was as Jesus said, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. That might have surprised a lot of the Jews who were still living under the Old Covenant and they sought to keep themselves set apart from anyone that wasnt a Jew. This wasnt a matter of external our outward and visible rituals and ordinances like those in the Mosaic Law. It is a command straight from Jesus lips and is applicable to every, single one of us. Jesus never told the Jews it was, You shall love your fellow Jew as yourself, but that everyone is our neighbor, as shown by Jesus in Luke 10:25-37 in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus point is that our neighbor is anyone we meet today or at any time, and we are to love them as we love ourselves, but nothing is greater than the Commandment to love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Thankfully, we are saved by grace and not by works because its not humanly possible to keep the First and Greatest Commandment that Jesus gave. Just because we cant keep it perfectly doesnt excuse us from striving to keep Gods Law.

Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself

When asked which is the greatest commandment, the Christian New Testament depicts Jesus paraphrasing the Torah: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind,” before also paraphrasing a second passage “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Most Christian denominations view these two commandments as, together, forming the core of the Christian religion. The second passage is considered to be a form of the Golden Rule .

The Nature Of The Ten Commandments

It would be useful for us to consider the nature of the Ten Commandments. Ancient law codes and systems do not work like our present law system, though our law system used to be much more like the ancient law codes. Modern societies have opted for exhaustive law codes. The idea is that every action that needs to be regulated or prohibited must be specifically mentioned in a separate law. This is why our federal and state law codes now run for thousands and thousands of pages. But ancient laws did not work like this. The law code was a model and was not considered exhaustive. The law codes gave guiding principles rather than a complete description of all things regulated. The ancient people were expected to extrapolate from what the sampling of laws did say and apply to the current circumstance. There was no concept of loopholes or technicalities. When a crime was committed, they reasoned their way from whatever the most nearly applicable law specified to a decision on how to administer proper justice in the case before them.

You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me

Bible reference – Exodus 20:3:You shall have no other gods before Me.

Explanation: Do we still need this commandment? We certainly do. Whatever holds the supreme place in a persons life is a god.

The story is told that in a certain museum in China there was an exhibit called “The American God.” And what do you suppose it was? A dollar bill, neatly framed.

It is strange how modern men turn away from the living God, who is revealed in nature and the Bible, and invent imaginary gods to fit their unbelieving hearts.

In his book, God and the Cosmos, Dr. Theodore Graebner tells us that some who set themselves up as teachersmany even as religious teacherssay that God is merely the spirit of the community . One of these modern leaders says, God is myself . Another says that he worships man .

How would you like to pray to “the spirit of the community” or pray to yourself or to mankind in general? These are some of the false gods proclaimed by the wise men of today.

Some worship pleasure others, reason, philosophy, or business. But all these things are as imperfect as humans themselves, and those who trust in them will be left at last without a light in the vacant and dark night, until the words of the first commandment meet them in the judgment: Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

Is Omg Using God’s Name In Vain

If you say something like Oh my God, then youre using His name in vain, but if youre saying something like OMG its not really using the Lords name in vain because youre not saying Oh my God. Its more like Wow. Words like gosh and golly, both dating back to the 1700s, served as euphemisms for God.

When Does A Person Sin By Despair

A person sins by despair when he deliberately refuses to trust that God will give him the necessary help to save his soul.

May no temptation take hold of you but such as man is equal to. God is faithful and will not permit you to be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also give you a way out that you may be able to bear it.

Development Of The Christian Canons

Development of the Old Testament canonDevelopment of the New Testament canonSt. Jerome in his StudyJeromeLatinVulgate

The Old Testament canon entered into Christian use in the Greek Septuagint translations and original books, and their differing lists of texts. In addition to the Septuagint, Christianity subsequently added various writings that would become the New Testament. Somewhat different lists of accepted works continued to develop in antiquity. In the 4th century a series of synods produced a list of texts equal to the 39, 46, 51, or 54-book canon of the Old Testament and to the 27-book canon of the New Testament that would be subsequently used to today, most notably the Synod of Hippo in 393 CE. Also c. 400, Jerome produced a definitive Latin edition of the Bible , the canon of which, at the insistence of the Pope, was in accord with the earlier Synods. With the benefit of hindsight, it can be said that this process effectively set the New Testament canon, although there are examples of other canonical lists in use after this time.

The New Testament writers assumed the inspiration of the Old Testament, probably earliest stated in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God”.

Some denominations have additional canonical holy scriptures beyond the Bible, including the standard works of the Latter Day Saints movement and Divine Principle in the Unification Church.

How To Love God Remember What God Calls You To

I think of the time my mother discovered that I had shoplifted a deck of playing cards. She launched into a speech that from my perspective went something like this, David Joseph Clark, I did not raise you to be like that. I carried you in my womb for nine months, and you thanked me by weighing 11 pounds when you were born. You screamed with colic all night long for four months. Ive provided a home for you, I cook for you, clean for you, and have done more than you can imagine, mister, and I didnt go through all that just to have you turn out to turn into a thief. We are going back to the manager, and you are going to do the right thing.

The Ten Commandments are Gods way of saying, I see how you are starting to treat each other. I didnt bring you out of Egypt for you to oppress each other, I brought you out to lead you into a better life. Therefore, I want to build some things into your life that will help you remember who you are and how I expect you to behave as my children.

The word therefore is right there at the beginning of the commandments and its the key to understanding where God is coming from. Everything turns on it. God liberated the people from a horrible situation so that they could, therefore, find a way to live that honors God and treats other people fairly.

What Does Jesus Say About The 10 Commandments

Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

How Can A Catholic Best Safeguard His Faith

A Catholic can best safeguard his faith by making frequent acts of faith, by praying for a strong faith, by studying his religion very earnestly, by living a good life, by good reading, by refusing to associate with the enemies of the Church, and by not reading books and papers opposed to the Church and her teaching.

I know that after my departure fierce wolves will get in among you, and will not spare the flock. And from among your own selves men will rise speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

Why People Turn To Superstition And Idolatry

The First Commandment – Bible study

Some 2,000 years ago the apostle Paul explained that the all-too-human tendency to attribute intelligence and life-giving powers to the physical creation has been a major source of superstition and religious blindness. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served rather than the Creator who is forever praised .

The First Commandment warns us not to accept a religion or philosophy that teaches that our life and well-being originate with or depend on anything other than the one true God. There is no pantheon of deities. There is no other source of life or blessings but God. There is no other power that rules over the heavens and the earth. Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God, also the earth with all that is in it . God alone created and sustains the universe in which we exist.

How To Love God Fourth Keep The Sabbath Holy

The fourth commandment we associate with Blue Lawsthose ordinances that kept businesses closed on Sunday. What if we saw Sabbath as fuller than that? Under Pharaoh, the people worked all the time. It was all about constant, maximum production. But this commandment sets up a way of living that is not about total constant production. Our Lord did not design us as perpetual motion machines, constantly producing 24/7, 7 days a week. God did not build us to be slaves to production. But to celebrate to good creation of God. Pharaoh would never allow that, God commands it.

The sabbath has always been seen as the most joyful of the commandments. It was never intended to be a bummer about things you cant do. Here are four reasons its considered the most joyful commandment.

Four reasons sabbath keeping is the most joyful commandment.

First, we are reminded to enjoy Gods creation. There is something about taking time to enjoy and rest in creation that restores us. For me, its walking on the beach, sticking my toes in the ocean that has been around for billions of years and will rise and fall for billions of years after Im gone.

Sabbath reminds us to enjoy life and one another.
