What Does The Bible Say Is The Cure For Sin

The Seven Deadly Sins

The Bible is the most powerful book ever written. It contains Gods message to those who seek to understand the purpose of their lives and how to live in a way that is pleasing to Him. Within its pages, we find the cure for sin, and the way to a life of peace and joy.

At the core of the Bibles message is the idea that God desires a relationship with us, and that He has provided a way for us to have that relationship through His Son, Jesus Christ. This relationship begins when we receive Jesus as our Savior, and it is established and maintained through a life of obedience to His commands. In this article, we will explore what the Bible says is the cure for sin and how we can apply it to our lives.

Contenders For Worst Sin

The plain fact is, the Bible presents some sins as worse than others. Some are described as downright damnable. The following are some strong contenders for the worst of the worst kinds of sin: From Proverbs 6:16-19, we learn that God detests arrogance, deception, murder, and false accusations, as well as hearts quick to rush into evil actions, minds bent on devising evil plans, and voices skilled in turning people against each other. Of these, arrogance might be said to edge out the others for first place, as a prideful heart has long been recognized as the sin which fuels all the others .

What Does The Bible Say Is The Worst Sin

What Does the Bible Say is the Worst Sin The Bible is very clear that sin is a major problem, and it identifies several sins as particularly grave. The Bible speaks of a variety of sins and their consequences. It does not explicitly state which sin is the worst, but it does speak of certain sins as particularly damaging, such as idolatry, murder, adultery, lying, stealing, and envy.

Pride is seen as the root of all other sins and is seen as the ultimate disobedience to God. In Proverbs 16:18 the Bible says Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Additionally, 1 Corinthians 8:2 identifies pride as an obstacle to knowing God, and James 4:6 states that God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Pride is seen as the sin that puts us in direct opposition to God, and is seen as the worst of all sins.

Falling Tears And Flying Tables

As for falling tears, there are two times in the Gospels we read about Jesus weeping: at the sight of a heartbroken family and at the sight of a hardhearted city. As for the first instance, he saw the family of his friend Lazarus grieving his death, and Jesus broke down and wept right along with them . As for the second, Jesus wept over a city, Jerusalem, that was rejecting him. This city would crucify him, and Jesus ached because of their persistent unbelief and because of the destruction he knew was coming against them within a few decades .

These tears give me permission to grieve across party lines. When I see anybody hurtinga death in the family of the politician whose platform strikes me as insane at best, a tragic church backstory of a gay person, a scary diagnosis for a skeptic of ChristianityI dont say, Not my people, not my problem. No, in that moment, Im invited to be the Samaritan who happens upon the beat-up Jew on the side of the road. Jesus falling tears pour shame on my tribalism.

Central To These Debates Is A Massive Theological Question: What Is The Worst Sin

Central to these debates is a massive theological question: What is the worst sin? Or, more commonly, when examining two sins: Which sin is worse than the other? And, yes, these questions are very theological. The Greek word translated sin in the New Testament is hamartia, which means to miss the mark. Missing the mark assumes humanity has been given a target, and theres no objective bullseye without a birdseye view from above. Everybodys got a thousand opinions when it comes to answering these theology questions and theyre ready to fight for them, whether theyve thought them through theologically or not.

The Worst Sin In The World

Special to The Sentinel-Record

While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him.

— John 12:36-37, ESV

John’s Gospel is full of light, but shadows linger. For every disciple, there are more Pharisees. For every miracle, there are multitudes who remain unmoved. For every offer of free grace, there is an unyielding majority who remain steadfastly in slavery to sin. It is sad but true the most common response to the gospel of belief, is unbelief.

Unbelief is the world’s worst sin. The kingdom of God is full of adulterers, murderers, liars, and thieves who repented and believed. But there will not be one unbelieving person found in Heaven. Unbelief is so dangerous and damning that it needs to be identified, understood, and avoided at all costs.

The theological term for ordinary unbelief is total depravity. This does not mean we are all bad all the time, for we also bear the image of God and have the capacity for love, kindness, honesty, even sacrifice. But none of those attributes will be a substitute for belief .

“They did not believe” because they could not believe. The only remedy for ordinary unbelief is the great miracle of saving grace, which produces the gift of faith, which comes through the light of the word of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What Are The Worst Sins

Just what are the worst sins a Christian can commit? Would you say it would be to call someone a liar? Maybe it is for a married person to commit adultery. Or, what about deceiving others? Could it be that the worst of all is to murder someone?

We know that all sin is an offense against God. All sin cost God the life of His Son Jesus to provide redemption for a people who could not help themselves. Sin is unquestionably the great reproach against God.

List of Sins

But why are there lists of sins in the Bible? Are some worse than others? Are they listed so that we can be more aware of them in our lives? Could you list all the sins in the Bible and then rank them according to what you think are the worst ones, or maybe make a Top Ten list of sins? Of course you could do that.

What I find interesting is the groupings of sin problems in the Scriptures. Here are a few that stand out to me:

  • James 3:16For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. Notice that every evil thing is listed with self. Where you find self-seeking, you find every evil thing! That is something that you must avoid!
  • Colossians 3:8But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Did you recognize that where you find anger and rage you usually find cursing?
  • Busybody

Be careful that you keep your focus on Christ and avoid the need to take care of everyone elses business.

Most of the seven deadly sins are defined by Dante Alighieri as perverse or corrupt versions of love lust, gluttony, and greed are all excessive or disordered love of good things and wrath, envy, and pride are perverted love directed toward others’ harm. The sole exception is sloth, which is a deficiency of love. In the seven deadly sins are seven ways of eternal death. Pride is often thought to be the father and promoter of all the other sins.

Does The Bible Mention Deadly Sins

Many think the deadly seven are recorded in the Bible. Even though each of the seven is a sin, this list is not contained in Scripture. The history of this sin categorization began in the year 400.

Evagrius Ponticus, a fourth-century monk, described eight evils to resist. Two centuries later, Pope Gregory 1 refined the inventory to seven. Almost every sin can be placed in one of these seven categories. Isaiah 14:13-14 tells us pride and selfishness are related to each of the seven and are viewed as the root causes of all sin.

What Is The Worst Sin Jesus Falling Tears Pour Shame On My Tribalism

As for flying tables, Jesus seems to reserve his angriest times for when insiders dont care about outsiders and so they end up callously and cruelly adding layers to peoples lostness. Insiders can do this by turning the temple from a place where outsiders meet God to a place where insiders make money . So Jesus throws tables. Insiders can do this by caring more about winning a religious debate on what you can and cant do on Sabbath than about noticing some guys deformed hand . So Jesus gets angry and heals the hand out of compassion for the man as well as anger toward the leaders. If Jesus tears pour shame on my tribalism, his anger sets it aflame and burns it to the ground.

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people . In the final estimation, were all in huge trouble without Jesus. Thats why, whatever level of badness I see in the people around me, for me to add layers of lostness between them and Jesus would be the worst thing I could ever do to them.

Where Are The Seven Deadly Sins In The Bible

Throughout the sweep of the Scripture, these seven specific sins are addressed. Exodus, Deuteronomy, Proverbs, and Galatians are some places where the deadly sins are identified.

    The 10 Commandments

    1. You shall have no other Gods before me. 2. Dont make an idol. 3. Dont take the Lords name in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. 5. Honor your parents. 6. Dont murder. 7. Dont commit adultery. 8. Dont steal. 9. Dont lie. 10. Dont covet.

    Galatians 5:19-21

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Sin is a severe and deadly business.

Lust, sloth, greed, gluttony, wrath, envy, and pride are considered to be the worst sins imaginable. The early Roman Catholic Church taught that these sins could not be forgiven, according to Roger Barrier.

Although they still represent human depravity, according to the Bible, these seven deadly sins are completely forgivable by God writes Barrier. They will not separate an authentic believer from the love of God. We are all guilty of committing at least some of them some of the time: overeating at Christmas , ignoring Gods direction for our lives , being jealous of our friends new boat , losing our temper , procrastinating , or fantasizing about being with someone we find attractive . Personally, I would say that pride is the root of all sins, added Barrier. But if they were deadly sins, no one would ever be saved for eternity with Christ.

How To Deal With The Guilt Of Sin

In reading over the sin descriptions, we realize we are guilty of committing all of these at one time or another. All sin, according to Romans 6:23, results in death. Paul perfectly captures the human condition in Romans 7:21-25 :

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in Gods law but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Jesus shows, tells, and empowers us to raise our standards from fleshly to spiritual. He commands us to love others as we love ourselves and love God with our heart, mind, body, and soul . When we fix our eyes on Jesus and choose to look more like him, we will be more aware of our own areas of weakness.

We can choose to adjust our thinking and actions by replacing our thoughts with things that are good and honorable with prayer while looking to Jesus as our teacher and savior. The Lord accepts us as we are, yet he doesnt leave us there. He wants us to resemble Him, our Heavenly Father. To combat our sinful nature, prayer is our weapon. We can pray what I call a replacement prayer.

Why Is Sin Portrayed As Adultery

Adultery is a particularly damaging sin, as it destroys trust and intimacy in a relationship. In the Bible, adultery is often used to illustrate the consequences of other sins. In the Old Testament, adultery was used to illustrate the consequences of idolatry and disobedience to God. In the New Testament, Jesus uses the example of adultery to illustrate the consequences of sin and the importance of repentance.
