Easier said than done, right? Ive never been good at doing self-led bible studies , and the ones Ive done in groups have been somewhat overwhelming . What Does the Bible Say About Child Rearing? – 4-1-21

Issac was the miracle child born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. Isaacs birth fulfilled Gods promise that Abraham would become the father of a great people.

When Issac was a young boy, God asked Abraham to take his beloved son to a mountain to sacrifice him. At the moment Abraham tied Issac up, the angel of the Lord stopped him saying, Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.

Some time before King Saul died, God had sent Samuel to the family of Jesse to choose a new king. To Samuels surprise it was David, Jesses youngest son, who was to be Gods chosen king. His seven elder brothers were amazed, but God saw that David loved him.

David the shepherd boy went on to become a great fighter, defeating the Philistine giant Goliath.

Samuel was dedicated to God by his mum, Hannah after she had prayed persistently for a child. When Samuel was around four-years-old, he was taken to the tabernacle to serve under Eli the priest. Even as a child, Samuel was given his own tunic, a garment normally reserved for a priest. Samuel was a prophet and heard from God:

The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, Samuel! Samuel! Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening.

Parents Provide For Their Children

Now I am ready to visit you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.

Paul, who wrote this letter, doesnt give instructions about child-rearing, but he makes a point about parenting while he is illustrating something else.

Paul is addressing the Corinthian churchs frustration that he isnt allowing them to support him. The apostle is doing manual labor and building financial support among other churches. The Corinthians feel like theyre not allowed to express their love and appreciation for Paul by supporting him. But Paul knows that allowing them to support him would change the relationship. He would be subservient to them.

He uses the example of parenting here to demonstrate that the relationship shouldnt work that way. Children shouldnt have to scrimp and save to support their parents. On the contrary, parents pour themselves out to serve their children. By doing so, they maintain authority over and respect from their children.

While this example shouldnt be taken as a biblical prescription, its hard to miss the logic in it. It dramatically changes the relationship when parents are reliant upon their children. Even though first-century parents would eventually find themselves being cared for by their heir, their estate would become the childs to help cover those expenses.

The Bible And Slavery

The Bible contains many references to slavery, which was a common practice in antiquity. Biblical texts outline sources and legal status of slaves, economic roles of slavery, types of slavery, and debt slavery, which thoroughly explain the institution of slavery in Israel in antiquity. The Bible stipulates the treatment of slaves, especially in the Old Testament. There are also references to slavery in the New Testament.

Many of the patriarchs portrayed in the Bible were from the upper echelons of society and the owners of slaves and enslaved those in debt to them, bought their fellow citizens’ daughters as concubines, and perpetually enslaved foreign men to work on their fields. Masters were men, and it is not evident that women were able to own slaves until the Elephantine papyri in the 400s BC. Other than these instances, it is unclear whether or not state-instituted slavery was an accepted practice.

In the 19th century United States, abolitionists and defenders of slavery debated the Bible’s message on the topic. Abolitionists used texts from both the Old and New Testaments to argue for the manumission of slaves, and against kidnapping or “stealing men” to own or sell them as slaves.

When you make mistakes, openly discuss them with your children, so that they can watch you run to God in your imperfections, rather than running from Him.

The Importance Of Discipline

Psalm Chapter 16 Summary and What God Wants From Us

Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them .

Do not withhold discipline from a child if you punish them with the rod, they will not die .

A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother .

Discipline your children, and they will give you peace they will bring you the delights you desire .

Without discipline, children develop the behavioral patterns that make the most sense to them and thats not good for anyone.

Children raised without discipline bring disgrace to their parents. Their choices reveal that they never had consequences. An absence of consequences is truly a form of neglect. Disciplining children isnt easy. To do it wisely requires a lot of discernment, strategy and effort. But its easier to discipline younger children who are developing than it is to try and fix the problems that a lack of discipline introduces.

Think of it like planting a garden. The proper care of a growing garden is time-consuming. It requires weeding and pruning. But its less work than letting a garden grow however it chooses and then trying to change it after the fact. Once the weeds have overtaken it and all the plants and trees are overgrown or diseased, the effort required to turn things around is immense.
