Where Is The Prayer Of Jabez In The Bible

What Are The Few Things We Could Do In Prayer To The Lord

The Story of Jabez

Before we examine what is the prayer of Jabez according to the Bible, allow me to reiterate some basic information concerning prayer to the Lord God.

Whenever we petition the Lord God there are few things we could do.

Generally speaking, we could ask Him, thank Him, or praise Him for something or someone.

But Jabez asked for something!

The Prayer Of Jabez Meaning

For us to understand the meaning of the prayer of Jabez, let us first of all look at the life of Jabez. According to 1 Chronicles 4:9, the bible tells us that Jabez was more honorable than all his brothers. To be a man of honor is to be morally sound, ethical, principled, righteous and full of integrity. All these virtues was seen in the life of Jabez, but yet he was a man of sorrows. Even though Jabez was a good and honest man, who feared the Lord, his life was plagued with all kinds of hell and repeated problems. The question now is this, why would such a nice guy be a victim of such a terrible circumstance? The answer is foundation.

Jabez was born in a wrong foundation, the bible tells us that the mother called him Jabez because he was born in sorrow. Jabez was given a name that was synonymous to sorrows. The problems of Jabez started at his birth, therefore he began to struggle all his life. No matter how good he was, good never came to him, only sorrows and agony. Though he was a honorable man, but there was nothing honorable about him. There are many believers in Christ today, that are suffering from foundational problems, like Jabez the foundation of there birth was faulty and that began to affect the rest of there lives. Only Jesus Christ, through prayers can save and deliver them. Now let us look at how to overcome foundational problems.

An Exception To The Rule

Nevertheless, theres always an exception to the rule that the birth of a child brings with it great joy and happiness.

Have you heard of Ichabod?

At his birth, his mom wasnt happy at his coming because of surrounding circumstances.

Her husband, her brother-in-law, and her father-in-law had all been killed and died respectively on the same day.

Upon hearing this news, she was pregnant and near to delivery, so, she gave birth instantly. Just after giving birth to her son, she named him Ichabod.

Israel was at war with the Philistines and they had just captured and were in possession of the Ark of God.

Ichabod in Hebrews means, The glory is departed from Israel. This she named her newborn son because she had just lost by death so many loved ones in one day and coupled with the loss of the Ark of God to their enemies.

Thus, his birth was a sad one even for her. Just before she dies at the birth of Ichabod her midwives inform and cheer her up by saying she should not be sad because she had given birth to a son but she didnt regard it. .

It was a sad day for all of Israel.

God Is The Only One Who Gives Blessings

" Just Thinking" by Robert J. Tamasy: January 2016

We see in Jabez’s prayer that he prays to God and God alone. From this, we know that God’s blessings only come from Him.

We can carry this message into our daily lives as a reminder we should prioritize God and His will for us over Satan’s temptations. This is especially important when vulnerable and stressed, as we are weaker against temptations like anger.

For example, it’s easy to fall into the temptation of anger when your child makes a mess. But you should resist that temptation because it doesn’t come from the Holy Spirit, and it won’t lead you to a blessed life.

Instead, you should look to God’s word through Bible study, reading devotionals, and listening to podcasts that bring you closer to God.

What We Can Learn From Jabez

Not only did Jabez recognize who God truly is, and not only did he have the right attitude when he prayed. Against all odds, Jabez also defied his supposed destiny. He was a conqueror through what God has done in him. He powered through the challenges life threw at him, and he honored God by doing so.

We may be facing trials and discouragements ourselves. But like Jabez, let us learn to look to the God we believe in. Ask that He would do great things through us, and ask that He would be the one to lead us every step of the way. With that kind of attitude, certainly, God will answer our prayers positively.

A Man Called Pain: The Story Of Jabez In The Bible

January 11, 2021Bible Study, Profiles in Faith

In the book of I Chronicles, we meet a man named Pain. Thats right. A man whose name means pain. That man is Jabez.

We dont know much about Jabez. In fact, we dont really know anything about him other than what the author of I Chronicles tells us, and here is what that is:

And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

I Chronicles 4:9-10, KJV

Even though the above passage represents only two verses in the entire Bible, I believe this prayer is significant. And Im grateful for the Bible letting us know about that prayer and the man who offered it.

Yesterday , I preached on the Prayer of Jabez. .

With this post, I wont go into as much detail as I did in my sermon. But I want to offer a few highlights for us to keep in mind. And they are:

  • Dont pass on your pain. As difficult as the pregnancy and childbirth may have been for Jabezs mother, she continued that cycle of pain by passing that pain onto her child. We must take care not to pass on our pain. Just because were hurting doesnt give us the right to hurt others.

Meaning & Lessons Of The Prayer Of Jabez

    1. The very first thing Scripture tells us about Jabez is that he cried to the God of Israel. Jabez states Gods lordship and headship over his life. When you pray, begin by acknowledging who God is!

2.That you would bless me Jabez not only recognizes God as the one and only true God, he also acknowledges that blessings come from God alone. Are you chasing broken promises and blessings that the world tries to entice you with? Are you striving toward prosperity on your own strength? When you pray, do it with a heart fully invested in the blessings of God.

3.that you would multiply my territory Many think that Jabez is simply referring to physical land when asking to multiply territory. However, if we look at the lineage of Jabez we can understand that he is not merely speaking in terms of wealth and prosperity but in terms of impacting the kingdom of God. He wanted his spiritual territory to increase, to claim generations for the Lord of Israel. Do you need to claim or reclaim some of the land Satan has taken from you? When you pray, ask God to multiply your territory and to do more through you!

5.keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain The name Jabez literally means born with pain. His own mother named him this because of the pain she endured in labor! When Jabez prays, he speaks against the testimony of his name and lets go of the shame it covered him in. When you pray, come to God vulnerable and ready for Him to turn your weakness into His glory.

    That You Would Bless Me

Bible Prayers – Prayer of Jabez

Dear God, Thank you for your great love and blessing over our lives. Thank you that your favor has no end, but it lasts for our entire lifetime. Forgive us for sometimes forgetting that you are intimately acquainted with all of our ways, that you know what concerns us, and you cover us, as with a shield. We ask for your guidance so that we might walk fully in your blessing and goodness today.

We ask that your face would shine on us. That you would open the right doors for our lives and for our loved ones, that you would close the wrong doors and protect us from those we need to walk away from. Establish the work of our hands and bring to fulfillment all that you have given us to do in these days. We pray that you would make our way purposeful and our footsteps firm out of your goodness and love. Give us a heart of wisdom to hear your voice, and make us strong by your huge favor and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Prayer Of Jabez And Other Misuses Of The Bible

THE Prayer of Jabez: Breaking Through to the Blessed LifeBruce H. Wilkinson

It is a #1 bestseller in Christian bookstores. In fact, it was a #1 New York Times bestseller. It is a book that promises to revolutionize your life. It is called The Prayer of Jabez.

If we were to start listing the problems with the book, it would be hard to know where to begin, and it would certainly take more pages than are available here to reach the end of the list. Here is a book that further fuels one of the most ungodly and damaging ideas to plague the Christian church in the past 50 years: the prosperity gospel. It is saying that God wants you to have more all you have to do is ask for it in the right way. It is a book that says we have the power to restrain or unlock Gods power and blessing . It is a book that gives the impression that God is powerless to bless us unless we ask for it. It is a book that presents a very unbiblical view of what blessing means.

In short, I suppose it is a book that tells people just what they want to hear but not what the Bible is saying. It is a book that promises almost the same thing as every self-help program on TVpower, blessings and contentment. And the book is filled with real life examples of how this prayer has worked for the author and others. .

ThePrayer of Jabez is based on two verses from the book of 1 Chronicles.

    The Prayer of Jabez

Scripture has many examples of prayers that teach us to depend on God and call upon Him. The prayer of Jabez is very inspiring and challenging for how we approach God with our requests. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that ALL Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Jabez was not using prayer as a formula to get something from God, rather He was calling upon God to help him accomplish the promises of God! Lets dive in and see how this Old Testament prayer can be applied today as we seek Gods provision and leading in our lives.

    The Four Petitions Of Jabez

“Oh, that you would bless me”

Jabez asks for a big blessing. The heart of God is to give good gifts to His children, and Christ encourages us to ask the Father for these gifts:-

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

    Matthew 7:9-11,

    “Enlarge my territory”

Jabez had a big goal. Out of all the other ancestors he noted for his prayer, and God honouring his requests.

This prayer could apply to many areas of the believers life – not just physical territory . Examples could include:-

On a personal level. For instance, the overcoming of fears or mindsets. E.g. that I might “take more ground” in godly thinking about myself, and that the ground that poor self esteem has in my life would diminish.

On a giving level. E.g. the charity that I work for expands it’s reach and impact in society.

On a work level. E.g. there are new opportunities at work for career development.

“Let your hand be with me”

The third thing that Jabez asks for is God’s hand to be with him. Jabez is dependant on God in this process of stretching and development. He looks to God for his strength, presence and guidance.

    “And God granted his request”

God honoured Jabez with his request. God desires to give us the longings of our hearts:-
