Where Biblical Knowledge Comes From

The most important element when reading the Bible is to not be in a hurry. Stop and meditate on the words. And pray for the Holy Spirit to open up the meanings and understanding of the Bible It is the Father that reveals spiritual knowledge through the Holy Spirit and He reveals these truths to those whom He calls. If you are wanting to read the Bible, believer or not, this may be strong evidence that God the Father is calling you . Spiritual truths are not actually acquired by human thought alone but as Jesus told Peter, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven . The point is that biblical knowledge is not gained by rote memorization or from academic head knowledge but by God the Holy Spirit. As Jesus said in John 16:13, But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

The Bible is the worlds best-selling book of non-fiction, according to Guinness World Records!

That, in itself, may not be a compelling reason to read the Bible. But more compelling is this: The Bible is where you can encounter God.

Literally speaking, the Bible is a collection of 66 separate books 39 books under the Old Testament, and 27 books under the New Testament. These books are ancient scripts of different writing styles, including narrative, poetry, songs, and prose, in forms ranging from letters to laws. They were originally written in Hebrew and Greek, but have since been translated into a multitude of languages.

You will find timeless wisdom in the Bible for living, and a treasure trove of truths about God and the world we live in, both seen and unseen.

Read The Bible In 90 Days

Are you excited to learn everything that the Bible has to say, but dont want to take a year to do it? This plan is structured so that you can finish reading the entire Bible in three months.

Youll need to dedicate at least a thirty minutes every day to finish the plan on time. Its a lot of reading and is a serious commitment to stay on track. However, its a great way to see the entire picture in a short amount of time. The only downside is that you dont get as much time to dig deeper.

Once youve finished this plan, go back and pick out chapters or books to study at greater depth. What things jump out to you when you read them a second time?

Genesis: Where It All Began

In the Old Testament, Genesis, which means origin, is a good starting point too. Reading this narrative about the beginning of the world, how sin came to be and the impact it had on the world, gives us a reference point to start understanding the context of the New Testament.

Many famous Bible stories like Adam and Eve, Noahs ark, and the story of Joseph are found in Genesis.

Introduction to the book: The Book of Genesis tells us how everything began from humanitys history to become the world we know today. It reveals a dramatic prologue of Gods love for us, the tragedies of sin and the human race, and God initiating a brilliant plan to win us back from the clutches of darkness.

He does this by passing down a covenant blessing through Abraham and his family, including Isaac, Jacob, and other individuals, in order to bless all the families of the earth.

These descendants will become the foundation for the nation of Israel and Jesus the Messiah, who brings salvation for all of humanity.

Choosing Where To Start

If you’re really lost or still unsure of where to start, like I was when I first picked up a Bible, we’ve got some suggestions for you! But remember, start where you feel inspired and excited to read, and don’t be afraid to skip around. Keep in mind that this is just a sampling it’s not exhaustive. We’re providing this for your reference as you begin to explore the library God made for you.

The New Testament
  • The gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, JohnThese books tell the story of Jesus’ life and ministry from four points of view. Matthew tells Jesus’ genealogy and how He fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. Mark is a quick, action-packed read. Luke thoroughly describes Jesus’ ministry, emphasizing the historical accuracy of eyewitness accounts. John focuses on who Jesus is as a person, what He taught, and what it means to have faith in Him.
  • The Epistles: from Romans to JudeThe word epistle comes from the Greek epistole, meaning “letter” or “message.” Epistles on scrolls were the primary method of communication at the time. The authors of the Bible’s epistles were either apostles or Jesus’ family members . These letters contain TONS of advice and instruction for new and old believers, men and women, church leaders and servants, single and married people, business owners and employeesyou name it. Many biblical principles believers can apply today are found here.

Why You Shouldnt Start From The Beginning

Conventional wisdom tells us when we pick up a book to start at the beginning. Its how you read a book, from front to back. But the Bible is different. And I think its best to NOT start in the beginning.

Now, Im not saying you shouldnt read the beginning of the Bible. You should. In fact, I think you should eventually read the whole Bible. Just not at first.

Why?

Well for starters, the Bible isnt a single book. Its a collection of 66 books written over sixteen centuries by over forty authors. It is a diverse collection with different styles, unique voices, different purposes, and incredible stories.

Because the Bible is a compilation of books I think its best to start with some of the most central books in this collection. That way you can get a proper framework to engage with the rest of scripture.

So, where to start reading the Bible? Lets take a look.

How To Choose A Bible Reading Plan

Now that you have the best place to start reading the Bible figured out, you may want to consider a Bible reading plan that will guide you as you read through different sections and parts of the Bible. There are a number of different Bible reading plans, so knowing what you are looking for will help you find the plan that fits your needs and is the best place to start reading the Bible for you.

  • Chronological Bible Reading Plan A chronological Bible reading plan is designed to guide you through the books of the Bible in the order of the events and when they were written down. This is much different than reading straight through the Bible from cover to cover and some of the books of the Bible were written much later than when the events actually took place and how they were arranged in the physical book of the Bible.

Bible Study Tools offers a free chronological Bible reading plan that you can download and print today.

  • Bible in a Year Reading Plan This can also be called a one-year Bible plan. This simply means that you are working on a plan to read the entire Bible, from cover to cover, in one year. If you are new to reading the Bible, this may feel a bit disjointed as you read a bit in the Old Testament and a bit in the New Testament. In this case, you may want to look for a topical Bible reading plan that will focus on specific topics as you read such as faith, Gods love, giving your worries to God, etc.

Level Three: The Prophetic Books

The last section contains the writings of the prophets. They wrote about a great deal of things, but mostly they spoke about two major catastrophes in Israels history.

In 722 B.C., Israel was destroyed by Assyria, and then in 586 B.C., Babylon attacked and captured Jerusalem. These events were incredibly significant in the life of Israel. By and large, the prophets wrote to warn of, or explain, these events.

The final prophet, Malachi, wrote about 400 B.C., and then there was silence until Jesus arrival.

Use A Topical Bible Reading Plan

One of my favorite ways to explore Scripture is through a topical Bible reading plan. These spiritual growth resources offer bite-size pieces of Scripture for you to read, write, and pray through each day in an organized way.

Once youre finished with one, youll be very familiar with what God has to say about a certain topic or subject. This is helpful to anyone wanting to create a Bible study habit and make a quiet time a cornerstone of their life.

However, you may want to read the verses before and after the passage, too. Or, youll want to clarify how this passage fits with the rest of Gods Word. If not, you may take the verse out of context or think it means something it doesnt. But thats a common mistake many believers make, and you wont be alone if it happens to you a few times.

Behold I Am Doing A New Thing

. At that time people began. Plus unlike typical books you dont have to read the Bible from cover to cover to get started. The best place to start is with Gods many promises and with the Truth.

Therefore any first reading of the Bible should probably begin with the Gospels. Genesis If you want to start reading the bible chronologically then Genesis would be the place to start. John emphasises the love of God as found in Jesus Christ The Gospel of.

Romans – This is a good place to start if you want a clear understanding of the Gospel. Read 2 Timothy 316-17 and Psalm 1199 11 105. Here are 4 ways to get more out of your reading.

Since the Old Testament foreshadows Jesus Christ and the New Testament is sharply focused on Jesus Christ it makes good sense for a new Christian or a non-believer to start reading the Bible with any of the four gospels.
