Avoid Sinners And Enticements

The Book of Proverbs

10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. 11 If they say, “Come along with us let’s lie in wait for someone’s blood, let’s waylay some harmless soul 12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse”-15 My son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood. 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood they waylay only themselves! 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain it takes away the lives of those who get it.

Who Wrote Proverbs 31

We know that Solomon wrote the first 29 chapters of the book of Proverbs. The writers of chapters 30 and 31 are unknown, although we know the words of chapter 30 to be those of a man named Agur — his prophecy and prayer — and chapter 31 to be those of a king, King Lemuel — things which his mother taught him in his youth. There is speculation that Hezekiah, who became the 13th king of Judah after the kingdom of Israel split in two, added these last two chapters to the book of Proverbs during his work in editing the Old Testament, about 275 years after Solomon.

Regarding the writers themselves, Agur and Lemuel, the Jewish Talmud states that “Solomon was called by six names: Solomon, Jedidiah, Koheleth, Son of Jakeh, Agur, and Lemuel.” 1 The Talmud contains Hebrew civil and spiritual laws and traditions, and explanations of such. So, quite possibly, the words of these last two chapters of Proverbs can be attributed to Solomon, even though he didn’t include them in his writings.

Though simple, these two Bible verses are power-packed and deliver a hard-hitting message. That if you trust in the Lord instead of your human wisdom, God will show you the right path to take.

Before we dive into the deeper meaning of Proverbs 3:5-6, lets look at who wrote it.

    In The Tradition Of Solomon

Proverbs 25:1 provides another insight into authorship: These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied. The word translated copied can also mean transcribed. This suggests that some of the proverbs were produced by scribes living in the days of Hezekiah , after the lifetime of Solomon.

At least one anonymous sage did contribute to Proverbs. Portions of Proverbs 2223 come from an Egyptian wisdom text composed before Solomons lifetime, The Instruction of Amenemope.

In addition, Proverbs 1:25 appears to be quoting Jeremiah 20:7 and certain portions of Zechariah 7. However, just because there may have been later additions to the book of Proverbs doesnt mean the entire book is dated later than Solomon. There is also the possibility that Jeremiah and Zechariah were drawing on Proverbs.

    Later Interpretation And Influence

The pre-Exilic Old Testament allowed no equals to YHWH in heaven, despite the continued existence of an assembly of subordinate servant-deities. The post-Exilic writers of the Wisdom tradition developed the idea that Wisdom existed before creation and was used by God to create the universe: “Present from the beginning, Wisdom assumes the role of master builder while God establishes the heavens, restricts the chaotic waters, and shapes the mountains and fields.” Borrowing ideas from Greek philosophers who held that reason bound the universe together, the Wisdom tradition taught that God’s Wisdom, Word and Spirit were the ground of cosmic unity. Christianity in turn adopted these ideas and applied them to Jesus: the Epistle to the Colossians calls Jesus “…image of the invisible God, first-born of all creation…”, while the Gospel of John identifies him with the creative word .

In the 4th century, when Christianity was caught up in heresies and still developing the creeds which would define its beliefs, was used both to support and refute the claims of the Arians. The Arians, assuming that Christ could be equated with the “Wisdom of God”, argued that the Son, like Wisdom, was “created”, and therefore subordinate to the Creator their opponents, who argued that the relevant Hebrew word should be translated as “begot”, won the debate, and the Nicene Creed declared that the Son was “begotten, not made”, meaning that God and Christ were consubstantial.
