The Women Who Witnessed The Resurrection Of Christ

During the time of Christ, women were not allowed to be witnesses in the legal sense. Their testimony was not considered credible. Yet, it is women who are recorded in the gospels as the first to see the risen Christ and proclaim him to the rest of the disciples.

The accounts vary across the gospels, and while Mary Magdalene is the first to witness the risen Jesus in all four, the Gospels of Luke and Matthew include other women as witnesses too. Matthew 28:1 includes, the other Mary, while Luke 24:10 includes Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women.

How they exceeded expectations: These women were recorded in history as credible witnesses, in a time when men alone were considered trustworthy. This record has stumped many over the years who assumed the disciples of Jesus made up the resurrection account.

Powerful Women From The Bible

Throughout the history of Christianity, power has been associated with men. Women played major roles in their families but rarely on national levels. However, a few women shifted the paradigm.

In a patriarchal society, some women rise above the patriarch. A handful of women in the history of Christianity surpassed all societal expectations of Biblical times. Women in history had their own spheres of influence despite male dominance. To rise above a culture where their sexuality was not acknowledged was miraculous. A culture whose inheritance and marital laws favored men and ostracized women made it difficult for any female breakthrough. Despite the male dominance factor, the ascendancy of these six women was noteworthy enough to be Biblically recorded in the history of Christianity.

Miriam is the first woman in the history of Christianity to be a prophetess. She is acknowledged both in the Talmud, which is the source from which the code of Jewish law is derived, and the Torah, which means instructions and is made up of the first five books of the Old Testament.

Miriam helped her mother Jochebed hide Moses for three months . When they could no longer hide him, Jochebed put Moses in a basket and placed it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. When the pharaohs daughter discovered Moses, Miriam asked her if she could fetch a Hebrew woman to nurse the child.

Women In The Bible: Mary Sister To Martha

Old Testament Characters: Faithful Women – Leah

One woman who sometimes gets overshadowed by her more famous sister is Mary of Bethany. Though she is only mentioned a handful of times in scripture, we can learn a lot from her story.

Unlike Martha, however, Mary tended to sit at Jesus feet and listen to his teachings.

This earned her the reputation of being a quiet or submissive woman, but Luke 10:42 tells us that it was actually Mary who had chosen the good portion.

In other words, she had recognized that Jesus words were worth more than anything else in the world.

In a world that is constantly demanding our attention, it is easy to forget the value of quiet contemplation.

But as Mary shows us, it is in these moments of stillness that we can truly hear the voice of God.

Miriam: Sister Of Moses

Miriam, Moses’ sister, played an important role in the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, but her pride got her in trouble. When her baby brother floated down the Nile River in a basket to escape death from the Egyptians, Miriam intervened with Pharaoh’s daughter, offering Jochebed as his wet nurse.

Many years later, after the Jews crossed the Red Sea, Miriam was there, leading them in celebration. However, her role as prophet led her to complain about Moses’ Cushite wife. God cursed her with leprosy but healed her after Moses’ prayers.

Jesus Treated Women With Dignity And Respect

John 4:142 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. 8 The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming . When he comes, he will tell us all things. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he. Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ? They went out of the town and were coming to him. Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the womans testimony, He told me all that I ever did.

Luke 10:3839 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lords feet listening to what he said.

Matthew 9:2022Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed. Jesus turned and saw her. Take heart, daughter, he said, your faith has healed you. And the woman was healed at that moment.

First To See The Resurrected Christ

5 Inspirational Biblical Women

Matthew 28:110Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee there you will see him. See, I have told you. So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, Greetings! And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.

Women Are Equally Created In Gods Image

Genesis 1:2627Then God said, Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground. So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them male and female he created them.

Galatians 3:28There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 11:1112Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.

What Else Does The Bible Say About Women

When I think of the stories of Sarah, Hagar, Rahab, Ruth, Hannah, Bathsheba, Esther, and so many other women in the Bible, the common thread is that God heard them and cared for them. Although some of these women were foreigners to the Jewish people, God welcomed them into his family. When some of these women doubted Gods strength and power, He was forgiving and faithful to His promises.

If we flip to the New Testament, the same honor and respect for women is upheld in Jesuss teaching and that of the apostles. My favorite depiction of this is when Paul compares Jesus and the church to a husband and wife in marriage. Paul speaks about the joy Jesus has in presenting the church blameless and righteous before God. This is only possible because Jesus has covered us in his righteousness .

As women, we are most definitely part of Gods church. He wants salvation for us, to bring us into his holy family and to transform us into godly woman with a heart for the Lord.

Rebekah: Intervening Wife Of Isaac

Rebekah was barren when she married Isaac and unable to give birth until Isaac prayed for her. When she delivered twins, Rebekah favored Jacob, the younger, over Esau, the first-born.

Through an elaborate trick, Rebekah helped influence the dying Isaac into giving his blessing to Jacob instead of Esau. Like Sarah, her action led to division. Even though Rebekah was a loyal wife and loving mother, her favoritism created problems. Thankfully, God can take our mistakes and make good come from them.

Sarah: Mother Of The Jewish Nation

LESSER KNOWN BIBLE HEROINES – Jehosheba

Sarah received an extraordinary honor from God. As Abraham‘s wife, her offspring became the nation of Israel, which produced Jesus Christ, Savior of the world. But her impatience led her to influence Abraham to father a child with Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian slave, starting a conflict that continues today.

Finally, at 90, Sarah gave birth to Isaac, through a miracle of God. From Sarah we learn that God’s promises always come true, and his timing is always best.

Ruth: Virtuous Ancestor Of Jesus

Ruth was a virtuous young widow, so upright in character that her love story is one of the favorite accounts in the entire Bible. When her Jewish mother-in-law Naomi returned to Israel from Moab after a famine, Ruth pledged to follow Naomi and worship her God.

Boaz exercised his right as kinsman-redeemer, married Ruth, and rescued both women from poverty. According to Matthew, Ruth was an ancestor of King David, whose descendant was Jesus Christ.

Bible Verses About Beauty And Self

Beauty and self-worth are biblical topics particularly important to women, but certainly relevant to men as well. But before addressing Bible verses about beauty and self-worth, I first want to focus on self-worth.

Our self-worth is rooted in our identities, and for Christians, that identity is in Christ.

26. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:44
27. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 1 Timothy 2:5-6

That being said, the Bible verses below about self-worth talk about how we are treasured woman of God. Not only do we belong to Him, but we are also loved and cared for by Him. Our identity and self-worth is in our identity as children of God.

28. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8:3-4
29. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17
